Thunar 0.8.0 and xfce 4.4.0 got released yesterday and if I can get this running on pdaXii13 I think I may very well end up being the happiest Z geek in Lancs, if not the UK!?
I tried compiling the last release but had no luck- these latest releases may fare better (they depend on less libs and daemons now apparently) but I've been unable to get hold of the sources from neither the xfce site nor GNOMEfiles but hopefully kkazakov13 will be able to get hold of it as he has very kindly said he'd try to get it compiled and packaged for us (well, he offered to compile 'something' for me)- Thanks kkazakov13!!!

Does Thunar act as a drop-in replacement for ROX in that it also handles the desktop icons or does another program in XFCE do that?

The main reasons I want this new Thunar (and xfce too maybe) are
* ROX has little interest in retaining your desktop settings/icons - this is one of the few remaing flaws in our beloved pdaXii13
* ROX makes you faff around opening multiple windows to copy stuff- no fun when you're using touchscreen input
* ROX has problems with file extensions and associations, you need to mess with external MIME editors to set it up
pdaXrom is going to be very slick when we get this running!
It's been kinda cool using ROX for a while seeing as its based on RiscOS which ran on the first ARM-based machines, the Acorn Archimedes series so it was kinda like the Z paying tribute to its granddad or summat?

if you do "xfce4-session", a "startxfce" or "startxfce4" script will be created.
You can also change your original .xinitrc to point to "xfce4-session" instead of openbox/fbpanel. This way you'll have the correct keyboard settings etc.
I'll send you my scripts for 4.4rc2 this evening.

Built it, packaged it, but still playing with it. Looks really fast.
However, I have some issues like after suspend, can't resume it, also it starts rotated in portrait mode, and such. Hope you can help me to cleanup all the things, and I'll package it with the correct settings files.
P.P. I'll build most, if not all of the extra xfce plug-ins too.

That's fantastic news kkazakov13, thanks for doing this for us! If any of the packages are too big for uploading to OESF then hopefully Tyrannozaurus will be able to add it to it's b3 feed, which I'm sure will happen anyway if we get it working. If we're lucky we might not experience your problems with resuming under pdaXii13?!

Are you sure the left button doesn't work ?
Try the key left to the "-" key or the left shift key.
To get rid of the warning : create another user. When running thunar as root it is supposed to show that message. It also does this on the desktop.

I don't want to run like other user. pdaXrom makes troubles when I try this.
I might remove it from the source code I know I'm root ...
About the fn+click - i started xfce through startxfce4 and xmodmap wasn't loaded. After loading it manually, I have left click now.

The xinitrc.xfce script is attached .
Copy the /usr/X11R6/bin/startx to /usr/bin/startxfce
Then edit it and change the references to .xinitrc to xinitrc.xfce
Basically it's just a copy of .xinitrc without fbpanel and openbox. These are replaced by xfce4-session.

can you change "session and startup settings" and do you get a menu with "suspend/hibernate/log off/..." when quiting xfce ?
These things (the session manager) don't work on my Z (r121 with xfce4.4rc2). They did when I was running xfce4.4beta1 and xfce4.4beta2

I've removed the annoying labels "you are root ...".
you may need some standard libraries from the b3 feed.
* terminal depends on vte *
start with "startxfce4"
the config file is /home/root/xinitrc.xfce44 to not overlap your existing settings.
I've not built yet all of the plugins. Some give errors while compiling.
Fn + 3 / Fn + 4 does not seem to work, as also a lot of other things, which were working perfectly under ROX I hope to have them working real soon ...
P.P. I'm currently rebuilding xfdesktop to allow icons on the desktop (EDIT: didn't worked).

you mean the taskbar or the panel ?
Try a ctrl-alt-bs when you lose it and check what messages you have on the screen.

I would've thought Zaurus users would still need to use some of the matchbox applets such as the screen blanker, Light and Power settings etc. or does xfce 4.4.0 fully account for PDA users too? Otherwise, are the mb-applets compatible with the xfce panel or must we still run mb-panel as well?

I think it was because of buggy/crappy MPD taskbar plugin ... could not get it to work correctly, and after removing it, i have no crashes so far.

I'm trying to get icon desktops, from the readme i need thunar-vfs, will check this. Also on quit menu i'm thinking to replace some of the functions there (or add maybe) , i don't need shut down options, would replace it with "suspend" that works on pdax.
p.p. I'm definately thinking that this will be _my_ desktop / window manager , and will try to get it perfectly running.

I have download and installed all the package present on your ftp.
When i launch startxfce4 the gui run well but i have two problem :
- it's in portrait mode (i have a slC1000).
- the taskbar disappear after loading itself.
I run PdaxII13 for nand.

The portrait mode should be fixed, but for C1000 i don't know. startxfce4 normally changes it, but I think I saw something for c1000 and xfce on Chero's site.
About the taskbar - open terminal and start it from console - xfce4-panel , and check errors. Probably you're missing some library.
Other news: I could not get thunar-vfs up and running it requires HAL >= 0.5 to work, but HAL requires kernel 2.6.x and some other things ... which we don't have in b3 setup. Crap. Any ideas ?

HAL dependence was the main reason behind me failing to get a recent Thunar/XFCE version going last time I tried I think. I was hoping this necessity would've been dropped to get desktop support in Thunar 0.8.0 but obviously not No icons would be a big loss to its viability as a rox desktop replacement. This would obviously be no problem for the new pdaX, but that probably still won't have any hardware accelerated graphics on cxx00.
The only mb taskar applets I'm really bothered about are the card applet (this is the main one for me, mainly used for turning on/off wifi) the screen blanker and the menu one, maybe. Does the card applet work OK?

Desktop items : have to be enabled during compile-time. Check ./configure output.

Seems you're not following me. I told you that thunar-vfs requires HAL, but HAL requires kernel 2.6.x. and xfdesktop with icons requires thunar-vfs. I already tried enabling all possible options without luck.
EDIT: I'm rebuilding xfdesktop *again* ... hope this time with the correct stuff.
EDIT2: Ok, it might require my D-Bus after all ... at least bigger than 0.36, and the default one is 0.21. I have D-Bus in another thread (about the bluetooth one), but might upload it as well.

it requires my dbus package, in order to work. Tried with original one, but failed with missing stuff. Please remove original dbus package and install my dbus and dbus-glib

If you really want it useful, better wait for a bit more complete packages. Not that it doesn't work right now, I use it, but still, few packages will be repackaged very soon. Otherwise - install everything from here - http://wasp.drun.net/zaurus/xfce-4.4/ (http://wasp.drun.net/zaurus/xfce-4.4/) , without devel/ directory. It's your choice if you intall xfprint* and also *plugin* files. But the rest I think are almost all required.
Be aware that my dbus and dbus-glib packages is different than the default dbus! I'm using it, but you might break something else that depends on the old one.
You should remove dbus and install those two first, then the rest packages.

P.P. Something else that does not work - switching between portrait and landscape does not call xrandr, will have to check this too.

what are xfce4 library requirements? what packages should I install to have it working?

Remove default libpng 1.2.5 , install mine, 1.2.12.
Remove dbus , install dbus and dbus-glib from my site.
install vte from the official feed.
Then install all of the rest packages wherever you have some place.
If you want - don't install some of the plugins, and xfprint.
start with starxfce4.
that's all for this version now.

Anyone succeeded in creating launcher icons on the desktop? I have only 3 icons there and can't create more. It crashes when I try ... no output in the window why it crashed

Is anyone running the latest xfce/thunar on their PC who can check that this isn't a pdaX-specific error (that is if others are having this problem too)?
Sounds like you're getting close now but I think I'll hold out a little longer before I install- I want to see what happens with these icons.

Damn, just got nasty server crash while i was just trying to copy text from abiword to text file ... It might be that the server was started remotely via ssh ... but who knows
Anyway ... seems XFCE is significantly slower than ROX Trying to do some simple tasks like copy/paste/browser/etc was so slow ... and i had nothing started except xfce and 2-3 applets
I compiled it with optimizations ...

I'm working on it... slowly... all the packages are in pdaxrom-builder and build fine... but I haven't put together a xfce build yet... but in due time... I got my 4gb SD card today in the mail so I will be back on the Z tonight... maybe I will install the packages I built and test things out...

im running xfce44 in r121, and have a small issue, some icons dont show like Battery icon in panel. only i see isa image like a X =/

i've installed all your package for xfce4.4
but when i started xfce for my wm,
the desktop icons and "recycle bin warning" dialog displayed, then disappeared quickly.
so there is nothing on the desktop
no icons , no taskbar , no dialog window
only blue background and my mouse pointer
can you help me to find out the cause ?

Gtk-WARNING **: Cannot find icon “xfce4-backdrop”, cannot find theme “hicolor”, you may install it first.

so, i still do not know which lib i missed.
and the icons and warning dialog were displayed (taskbar was not displayed), they JUST[/c] disappeared quickly.
and when they disappeared, there is no error message printed in console.
i think maybe this problem is relate with the xfce taskbar.

You need hicolor-icon-theme package, attached it.
NOTE: RENAME to hicolor-icon-theme_0.5_all.ipk before installing, attachment names on the forum gets bugged!

What still needs to be fixed in this version of xfce? I gather that it's not officially `working`, but I'd be interested to give it a try if it's usable....
