Title: Pictures Of Sl-c3100 Guts?
Post by: Capn_Fish on January 28, 2007, 09:41:11 pm
I'm curious to see what the insides of my C3100 look like (and half-considering some modding), and was wondering if there are any hi-res pictures out there. If so, can anybody point me to them?

Thanks in advance.

Nice! Do you have any higher-res pictures?

Nope, the originals got lost in a drive failure.

Too bad, both about the pictures and the drive failure.

Yea, it sucked.  I have a backup server running now.

How much space is there between the mainboard and the top of the case around the USB area? More to the point, is there enough room to mod in a full-sized USB port?

I don't think there's enough space.

Dang! It would be awesome to mod in a full-sized port and not bother with the stupid cable.

About how much space is there?

EDIT: You are assuming that the original port would be ripped out, right?

Hi there,

here are some links you might already know (all japanese), but maybe helpful to post them again   :
Zaurus internal components (http://digit.que.ne.jp/visit/index.cgi?Linux%a5%b6%a5%a6%a5%eb%a5%b9%b3%ab%c8%af%a5%e1%a5%e2%2f%a5%cf%a1%bc%a5%c9%a5%a6%a5%a7%a5%a2)
C3000 internals (http://www.piro.hopto.org/~piro/pukiwiki/pukiwiki.php?SL-C3000%BE%DC%BA%D9%CA%AC%B2%F2%BC%CC%BF%BF)

I also remember a page (also japanese), where a guy put a very small USB bluetooth dongle inside a C3x00.
The USB connector was unsoldered and he put it right above the NAND flash (the Samsung part) in the lower right corner (top view of PCB).
At moment i can't find the link to the page, but i will   .

I also checked this area with a very small dongle and it seemed possible to put it there.

Don't forget to check out the great page from albertr (http://www.iral.com/~albertr/linux/zaurus/wireless/)!!!

Greets,

scholbert

Thanks! Those pages look great. You say there would be room for a USB dongle? Any hope for Wi-Fi? Ripping out the USB and replacing the USB port looks fairly easy, but it seems you need more than a dongle for Wi-Fi...

Not to be misunderstood, the USB connector of the stick was ripped off, not the small mini USB placed on the C3100 mainboard.

Placing a Wi-Fi stick wouldn't be that easy, it depends on the size of the module of course. In any case Bluetooth modules are smaller!
Use a USB WLAN stick, and USB interface is sufficient   .
Albertr managed to do so in a C1000, as you can see at his webpage.
But the C1000 devices have more space inside the case because of the missing harddisk.

Another aspect of placing additional hardware inside the case is power consumption and RF requirements.

Anyway you have to find a place inside, where RF broadcast can leave the case easily. Have a look around there are many postings about that in this forum   .

Regards

Hum ... but even if there wasenough space there is a major problem:
you loose the hardware sensing of hos/client operation.
Remember that pin 4 selects between HOST/CLIENT.
You would ither haveto hard wire one type of operation or find a free GPIO to select via software.

I thought these might be interesting - comparisons between the 1000 and 3x00

I don't think I've ever used my Z in client mode, so host only would work just fine.

I'm gonna take appart my C1K to modify the 5V OTG output current to matc or exceed standard USB specifications (piggyback the 5.7K with a 2.2K or even a 1.2K).

Any of you with service experience on the Cxx00 got any particular suggestions to be carefull about while opening the device ?

Looking at Albertr's mod it should be fine to drive  upto 650 mA ... but he made it so that it could not switch frm client to host mode (host only), wile I'm gonna leave that untouched: will this produce any bad side affects along with the current output boost ?

Ok I did tme mod and took some pictures while I was at it.
Look at my home page "ZElectronics" section on the left and "OTG Power Boost" on the top.

Now my zd1211 works connected directly to the back of my Z (with the mini-A adapter obviously).

Few notes:

PXA270 has a high speed serial directly intended to connecting BT chip. It could save the whole USB stuff and you can use smaller serial module. With a bit of hope they connected these pins out from BGA somewhere to PCB.

Yes C1000 does not need some parts - HDD power source and controller.

from pictures,  as pointed out by AlbertR (where's has he been, not heard from him for a while, hope he's OK?) there appear to be some pads on the board in the same pattern as the 6000, so in theory you could solder on one of the Mitsumi series bluetooth modules and it'd work provided you get the driver correct.

however, for a salutary lesson in the pitfalls, see my website about how I broke my 6000 during assembly, having discovered that the module I bought was not the right one.

I note that I bought a couple of modules from Segor.de - they supplied exactly what I ordered, so it wasn't their fault, but it turns out there are a number of variants of these modules with differing power requirements and ALSO different pad dimensions, my problem was the module's solder pads were a different pitch to the PCB!!!

so, yes, ideally, we need someone who can buy the right module and fit it to their C3x00 and get bluetooth working without the need for usb hackery!
