Hi,
Seems as "we" only care when we got troubles, and so there's a lot of good things that we left on the air.
I think that Zaurus is more than a technology, more than a device or a brand, maybe is more like a special way of life, an special approach on things, which turns the zaurus movement into magic, and the Zaurus into a myth.
I can't avoid to think on it, while reading the posts, in this times when the end is almost
announced.
Well, it's well known that when Dead, we'll reach the glory.
So, don't stop working. The legend has just started.
Best Regards.

An interesting philosophic thought.
Very encouraging.
Thank you for sharing.

This reminds me of a show ... V for Vendetta!

"you cannot kill an idea"
i think the zaurus and linux are more than the sum of its parts, and applying the windows metric of count the number of parts and add them dosent really work when comparing the two

Hi jocasmi,
do you know the HP 200LX palmtop?
Almost ten years after it has been out of production, it is still a valuable tool for a lot of people, and there is still support from third parties (me being one of them).
Sure, software development is almost non-existend anymore, so this kind of support is almost entirely replaced by repairs and - still - hardware upgrades.
The Zaurus is a similar kind of device. It allows real productivity (unlike many of today's PDAs or smartphones) and is very versatile. Suited for general purposes as well as very specialized ones.
Unfortunately, the Zaurus did not reach such a broad user base as the 200LX did, probably just because it was not sold outside Japan by Sharp. Even with vendors such as Trisoft, Pulster, Conex etc., people are more hesitant to buy such a product than if it were sold by the manufacturer officially.
Additionally, when the 200LX came out there was not much competition, especially no cheap competition. Nowadays, you have the choice between a lot of cheap PDAs, more expensive smartphones, and the Zaurus being in the higher price sector. So many people will rather buy a cheap PDA.
I hope there will be a good second hand market for the Zaurus.
And I'm very curious how long the supply of new units will last. Probably even Trisoft does not order too large stocks from Sharp because they would sit for too long on that stock.

Well ... for what it's worth ... Palm's LifeDrive is getting the axe!

For one, at least our Zs had more years than it, and two, our Z runs on linux, so it has *potentially* more future proofing in it!

The Palm Zire 72 production didn't last very long either. I think it was sold for about 2-3 yrs.
BTW my Palm Zire 72 still works like new, although I don't use it that much anymore.
My 2 Zauri are much more interesting.

As long as the hardware doesn't expire prematurely (like some dodgy low quality products these days that just quit working as soon as the warranty period is over), there is always new stuff you can put onto your Zaurus since linux has lots to offer on the Z ...

I'm gonna order a few backups....

You only realise that some things are a "classic" or the pinnacle of their type after they're gone:
My PalmT3 is quite old now, but I love it just as much as ever. Sure, there's the TX or lifedrive, but the T3's slider, screen and voice recorder make it unique.
My daughters Zire 72's mp3 and camera make it special... I couldn't believe Palm killed that model, I had to work quite hard to buy it (as a Palm refurb from a Canadian supplier, shipped to UK!).
I think the 3100 and 3200 will be sought after for a long time; I think if the 6000 gets properly sorted out with either Cacko or a full release of OZ, it too will be much sought after again.

The Tapwave Zodiac got the axe two years after being released into the market. Unfortunatly, it does not run linux, but there is still a pretty good following for these devices as well. If I am not carrying arouny my Zaurus, the Zodiac is with me. Long live hardware that is ahead of its time!
