Title: Dosbox Package Issues

DOSBox 0.65.0.1

I updated dosbox 0.65 and removed the mouse bug (0.65.0.1) .

N.B. : The mouse cursor will stay visible

Code: [Select]
Package: dosbox
Source: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/
Priority: optional
Version: 0.65.0.1
Architecture: armv5tel
Maintainer: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/
Description:  DOSBox is a DOS-emulator that uses the SDL-library which makes DOSBox very easy to port to different platforms.
Size: 5.9M

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The source :  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

My dosconf.conf :  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
My mapper.txt (sl-c3000) :  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

To launch dosbox with my configuration files, use the following command (after putting dosconf.conf and mapper.txt in your current directory) :
Code: [Select]
dosbox -conf dosbox.conf[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=154327\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

After some stripping - size of the executable is down to 1.8 mb - saving memory and disk space.

Also there are no shortcuts or whatsoever. Also it's linked against libGL.so.1 ... which is unnecessary
I guess I'll have to build it too and make the real package

Again a request - if you really want to make others happy with your packages, do it correctly. Sure there's a learning curve, but not that big.

it's also not that hard to be nice and thank people for their effort first and encourage them to do better instead of bombarding them with criticism
what you say is probably meant well, but the way you are saying it doesn't sound very nice and can be quite discouraging...

You're right, it's criticism, and I really sorry about this. My final goal is everyone to be happy. And I always try to be perfect, in every task/situation I do. That's why I talk like this, sorry again, no offense.

And if only the experts would post their packages here, we would miss a LOT of things.

I want to say it again ... my idea is not "Don't post your packages", but "Do it in the best way" ... it's all I want, really! Would be glad to help anyone with tips on building packages.

I really enjoy when seeing some new package in "Newest packages", specially I was happy to see dosbox. But not so happy to see it has some issues.

That's all I want - everyone to spend 1-2 minutes more and make it _perfect_ .

Sorry if anyone is insulted.

OK. Next time I will strip the executable.

How did you proceed to know that the libGL.so.1 is linked with it, and isn't necessary ?

The least you can do now is change the title of this thread and don't create topics like this one. Especially not when there is an existing thread about the package.

BTW : keep compiling, I love your contribs.

Well, all that said:

Where can we find libGL?
I couldn't find it in the controb feeds nor in the beta3 feed.
But indeed dosbox demands it.

Didn't noticed existing thread about the package, only for DosBox. Which is kinda different, but you're right. I should've posted it there.

I know it because I don't have it. It's not necessary, as it's actually Mesa's libGL - which is openGL in software. Mesa is for software packages which _require_ opengl to work.

In the case, DosBox have option --disable-opengl , useful on systems that don't actually have hardware acceleration ( at least I don't know a real OpenGL implementation for the Zaurus ). Otherwise it tries to use floating point OpenGL instructions, which Mesa converts back to software and it's a more instructions call.

on a related note, the ipk creation section of the wiki is probably out of date and/or does not contain sufficient info to build perfect ipk files.

maybe someone should look into updating the info so others have a easy to follow guide and what to look out for, ie don't forget to strip the binaries since make install sometimes doesn't do it for you, where to place an icon and the .desktop files, etc... so when people create ipk files, they can reference it, or use it as a check list to make sure the resulting ipk has less problems....

btw, (sometimes) make install-strip works great

I'd love to know more about compiling, I spent some time getting into it before but since then my setup errors when ever I run a configure script. Maybe I'll post for some help so I can get into this packaging as well.

Jeana's dosbox package works very well now, after installing the mesa package.

I intend to use dosbox for running HP 200LX palmtop applicaitons in three ways:

- via Connectivity Pack (the PC portion of HP 200LX software)
- via Palrun (Palmtop graphics emulator)
- native DOS apps run directly without Cpack or emulation, e.g. Lotus 1-2-3 v2.4

However, I find that dosbox is quite slow. The applications run much slower than on a HP 200LX with its 186 processor at 8 MHz.
but at least they run. CPack Filer, MindMap/LX and Lotus 1-2-3 could be started and used in a first test.

Does anyone have ideas how to tweak dosbox further for more performance?
Also, is there a fullscreen mode for Dosbox?

Thanks!

Alt + Enter works for fullscreen here.

Also running without X boosts the performance a bit, and it's in fullscreen by default.

P.P:

Can you try my package?
[a href=\"http://z.drun.net/packages/dosbox_0.65.0.2_armv5tel.ipk]http://z.drun.net/packages/dosbox_0.65.0.2_armv5tel.ipk[/url]
I saw you have 3200 - this package should squeeze the most performance out of the newest zauruses

It has mine mapper.txt configured as much keys I was able to add, it's in /usr/share/dosbox/ , 'dosbox' command is actually wrapper that uses dosbox.conf and mapper.txt in the mentioned directory. And it should not have much dependencies (except some sdl- packages from the feed)

I used as basis jeana's modified dosbox 0.65.0.1 source code - thanks!

hm - tested it: performance boost is not significant, and there are additional key mapping issues without X. So I'll rather use it under X.
However, my impression is that performance is indeed a bit better than the with jeana's package.  And no libGL dependency anymore. Although the binary size is almost identical to the stripped version of jeana.
But why did you put the dosbox icon into the Games menu? :-)

Good package.
however, Jeana's mapper.txt was better. Yours lacks the ":", or at least I couldn't find it yet.

Thanks Jeana and kazakov!

Another idea:
What about using an additional keymapping program within DOS in order to solve the problems with the Dosbox keymapper mapping only entire keys of the US keyboard instead of  the single key meanings?

Does anyone know keymapper programs for DOS which could solve that problem?
ANSI.SYS could do it I think, but I don't know how.

I doubt jeana's have ":" I just checked - it does not have it.

However, I'm trying to get it running, also I'm having problems with capital letters, even with shift, they seems to not shift. Perhaps my "shift" is broken ...

P.P. my package starts by default in fullscreen (when started from the icon). normally you can call dosbox -fullscreen.

It's in "games" because this is where the original dosbox from the feed resided ...

I've fixed it. Somehow left shift key is not know as left shift key but as "unknown" key.

now you can press : by using Shift+Fn + G ( that's ";" shifted ).

capital letters work too.

package updated (filename is the same):
http://z.drun.net/packages/dosbox_0.65.0.2_armv5tel.ipk (http://z.drun.net/packages/dosbox_0.65.0.2_armv5tel.ipk)

Hi kkazakov,

tried the new package with new mapper.txt.
I even saw the differences to the old mapper.txt (key_lshift "key 304" is probably the relevant mod), but here I still have no ":" and no capital letters! Any idea why?

With Jeana's mapper.txt I have the ":", but ONLY if I press the keys in the correct order:

First Shift, then Fn, then G.
If I pres Fn-Shift-G, no ":".

Can't the key mapping be adapter to the Zaurus in the sources? Then we didn't have to fiddle with these issues at all...

Might be possible to build in. Maybe it will take some effort more than with keymapper.

I don't know why it doesn't work with my mapper file. Works here great. Any errors in console?

Can you post diff from mine to Jeana's mapper.txt ? that works for you.

you can hack the source file bios_key something to have the mapping compiled into the binary. i did that on sharp rom version of dosbox. strangely, most keys were correct there and i only had o hack the : key in, but on pdaXrom, the entire keyboard is wrong without remapping the keys....

Thanks for your package! It runs faster than any package I've tried! However, I still get the same pointer misalignment issue.

I installed Windows 3.1 and it does start up correctly. But whenever I move the pointer at the screen (black arrow), the pointer in Windows (white arrow) moves oddly. Any possibility to fix it?

Hey Fatty!

Is your nick a tribute to the Zaurus legend that is Menaie? The one they call (adopts thick Scottish accent) Meestah Meanie?

Maybe we'll be able to get together a 7 dwarves (or should that be GNOMES?) of OESF? I think there is a girl somewhere on these forums sometimes so she could play Snow White

EDIT

Before anyone gets pedantic, yes there were no dwarves called Fatty or Menay but there was a grumpy which is near as dammit Meanie for me!

The prince on the white horse came riding by ...

With a usb-mouse it (almost) works.
Windows uses another mouse acceleration than x-windows on my Z. If I move at a constant low speed, the two pointers follow each other, when going to fast, the windows pointer accelerates and there is a gap between the pointers. A bit of math and a fast move in the correct direction brings them together again.

Howto (for ZDevil) :
- create a dedicated dir to use for dosbox (this will be your "C:\"). I created "/mnt/ide2/mydos"
- in a subdir, copy all files from your old windows installation disks (/mnt/ide2/mydos/winstall)
- start dosbox using "dosbox /mnt/ide2/mydos"

(it says /mnt/ide2/mydos is mounted as c:\)
in dos :
cd winstall
setup

After setup has finished :
cd ..
cd windows
win

Questions:
How can we make it snappier ?
I played with "cycles" and noticed that "9000" makes it better for me than "15000".
Anything else I can change ? Where are the real dosbox dwarves ?

The prince.

I hope no one minds if I post a little off topic, but since this thread already has off topic posts, here goes.
I have a program called EditCDG that only runs on windows.
Fatty, would you try it out for me on your windows 3.1 setup in dosbox?
This program was created in the year 2000 and I'm not sure it will run in 16bit windows.
EDIT
This program is used for "cleaning" up the graphics in karaoke *.cdg files, otherwise, one needs to use a Hex editor to do this, and that is really time consuming.

EDIT
This program is used for "cleaning" up karaoke files, otherwise, one needs to use a Hex editor to do this, and that is really time consuming.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=155160\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I tried to run setup with Win3.1 progman and DosBox crashed and complained

Exit to error: Could not set fullscreen video mode 640x960-16: No video mode large enough for 640x960.

Man, my Z has 640x480 only!

How about 3.1 ?

Thanks Fatty, I didn't think it would run, but I was hoping. There is no Linux alternative to EditCDG.
Also, EditCDG opens maximised on my PC, I usually hit the second button on the right of the titlebar to bring it to a smaller size. (I cannot remember what that button is called)
EDIT:
I have windows 3.1
I wonder if CorelDraw 3 will install and run. CorelDraw 3 was made for Win 3.1
It's very doubtful..

I haven't yet installed any monster app like Office 6 and plain Win 3.1 appears to be pretty responsive @ 624MHz.

I also notice big improvement with CPU cycles set at 5000 instead of 15000.

BTW, do you have pointer issue (i.e. X pointer trailed by Windows pointer) ?

So, yes I have the mouse issue. Maybe it can be solved by changing "mouse accelaration" in windows.

About install : please read the linked post. You have to copy the files in one dir you can access in dosbox. I did that on a pc, then I copied the dir to my Zaurus.

(I also put "fullscreen=true" and "fullresolution=640x480" in dosbox.conf)

use "cycles = 2500"

Hi,

About windows 3.11 :
- cycles=2500
- frameskip=2
- fullscreen=true

Mouse-speed in windows : slowest

then both pointers seem to stay together (don't challenge it, you can get a gap between them), but it is possible to play a game of patience or hearts.

I'll try installing excell 5 later this week (if i still have my installation disks).

Anyone has better settings ?

Just came across a very interesting project:

http://www.users.waitrose.com/~thunor/extinct/about.html (http://www.users.waitrose.com/~thunor/extinct/about.html)

"Extinct is an x86/DOS emulator using libSDL that runs on Linux PCs and the Sharp Zaurus. The aim of the project is to interpret just enough x86 instructions and interrupt functions/services to be able to play certain early DOS games."

Not sure if this has been discussed in the forums before.

For Chinese Win 3.1 @ C3100 w/ Beta3, I found
cycles=5000
no frameskip
Mouse-speed in windows : slowest

work best for me, but that is far from perfect as the two pointers (X & Win) don't stay together all the time.

I'll install pdaXii13 and try later.

I just got done playing a nice game of Circa 7000:Armies of Armageddon via dosbox emulation.  It's a great game.  I highly reccomend it, especially to those people who are familiar with warhammer/warhammer 40k.  I didn't have any problems with the mouse, but it was a touch slow.  Now to try to fiddle with the settings and break something...

I compiled dosbox 0.66rc3. I don't have the mouse-pointer-issue any longer (the X-windows pointer is gone and all there is left is the windows-pointer).
Speed is about the same though. I think the speed improvement they talk about on the dosbox site is for x86-cpu-s only.

Hi Meanie,

hmm - why is it necessary to use the right shift key?
The left shift key does not seem to have ANY effect.
(although I recall that it worked after I had installed Jeana's dosbox package!)

Couldn't the bios_keyboard.cpp be modified in a way that it reflects the Zaurus keyboard without exceptions?
I had a look at it, but I don't understand the key code table yet.
But at least I see that it distinguishes between left shift and right shift...

BTW:
I don't have the impression that dosbox 0.70 is faster than 0.65 (as suggested by the changelog)... rather the opposite. Using the HP 200LX connectivity pack in it and PAL applications using PALRUN, it seems to be even slower. Is this just my impression or do others also notice this?

DId anyone ever get Lotus 1-2-3 to run inside Dosbox? I only get the spash screen of 1-2-3 but nothing else.

Thanks

It is - well - slow but usable.
It runs slower than on a singlespeed LX, and when using small fonts they are not too well readable (because they are VERY small).
But it runs.
You can see screenshots of it [a href=\"http://www.hermocom.com/en/services/weexpc/screenshots]here[/url]

I think it's impressive that the Z can run Windoze at all.

I agree that this seems somewhat slow.  I might be mistaken, but I got the impression that there was actually a slight delay between the keypresses and the character appearing on the screen.  It's hard to tell from the video.

I suppose this would be an option if you need to run Win, but if there was that much delay to increase font size, I'm going to guess that more complex functions would be much slower (e.g. scrolling a relatively large document in Word, updating numerous formulas in a spreadsheet, spell checking, etc.).

I believe the CF interface is a little faster than SD on the Z, which might explain Dougeeebear's comment.  I do have a HDD that I use on special occasions.  I wonder if I still have my old Word 2.0 and Excel 4.0 disks lying around...

Wow! Double the speed! It means 15sec less to get into Win and no pointer delay at all? It is amazing! Even more amazing if you can share how you tune your Z ...

Mine uses pdaXrom beta 3 + XFCE + Meanie's dosbox 0.70_2. Cycle @ 5000 and MEM @ 16. I can start dosbox + Win outside X, but failed to get USB mouse to work, so can't say whether I can have better performance, but sure can't get twice.

I haven't tried running Win3.1.  I was only commenting that the performance in the video seemed a little sluggish if one were to do real work in that environment.  I suppose it would be a trade off, though.  If you can't find a native Linux app to use, then running Windoze on the Z might be an option.

Still, it's really intriguing me... especially if this can be tuned to run faster.  I don't know what I'd actually use it for, but it seems pretty cool.

I just downloaded wellswang's dosbox_0.70-iwmmxt_armv5tel.zip from the pinned new packages announcements thread.
Has anyone got the keymap to match the newer clamshell Zaurii? (Cxx00)
In dosbox, it says to mount a directory using this:
mount c ~/dosprog
I cannot for the life of me make the '~' key on the zaurus keyboard work.

Do any of the function F1-F10 keys work somehow?

Thanks, I got it mounted on the hard drive, now I have to decide what programs to run, most of the dos games that I have use the F1-F10 keys.

Wasteland is great because you don't really even need the mouse. there's keyboard shortcuts for most things (IMMSMC).
Title: Dosbox Package Issues
Post by: Jon_J on March 20, 2007, 02:17:00 am
only 1/2 of the keyboard works though. We really need a Zaurus keymap for all the keys.
And a list of the special keys, who would think a semicolon=colon?
Antikx, the mouse seems to work in the latest posted version dosbox_0.70-iwmmxt_armv5tel.ipk
I also think there's something funny going on in meanie's pdaxii13. when you first launch dosbox, the shift key produces an unending stream of this ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I have to hit shift again, then backspace all the ,,,,,,,,,,,,, chars
One more question, I only have my dos 6.0 disks, can I use that version of dos edit in dos 5.0?

edit.com from dos 6.0 works, but I cannot use the expand utility to expand any of the files with the underscore in the extension. I need the _ or ? available

anyone know where the question mark and underscore are?
I've been mashing a lot of key combos lately.
I just found the ?
It's right shift plus /
Now I can use this for a wildcard and unpack my files with expand.
These odd keyboard combos need to be documented somewhere.
Here are some that I have found in "dosbox_0.70-iwmmxt_armv5tel.ipk"
The below characters are not marked, or are not in the correct place on the Cxx00 clamshells.
Code: [Select]
To get these characters    (Right shift makes caps and some other hard to find chars)

 :  (Fn + Right Shift + g)        = colon
 ?  (Right Shift + /)             = question mark (a dos wildcard)
 \  (Fn + Left Shift + /)         = back slash
 |  (Fn + Right Shift + /)        = pipe
 >  (Right Shift + .[period])     = greater than
 _  (Fn + Right Shift + -[dash])  = underscore
 @  (Right Shift + 2)             = at (@)
 ^  (Right Shift + 6)             = (^)
 &  (Right Shift + 7)             = ampersand
 *  (Right Shift + 8)             = asterisk (another dos wildcard)
 (  (Right Shift + 9)             = left parenthesis
 )  (Right Shift + 0)             = right parenthesis
Now, I just need to find the Function keys F1 - F10
I included a screenshot of the keymap

Thanks Jon_J and wellswang.
I'm getting the occasional freezup playing Wasteland. I typically need to press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace and wait about 30 seconds for X to die.
Anyone else have that problem or is it possibly game specific?

I don't have Wasteland.
This other game is very slow, but plays.
Betrayal at Krondor
http://www.google.com/search?q=betrayal+at...lient=firefox-a (http://www.google.com/search?q=betrayal+at+krondor+download&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)

I may try Dungeon Master next.
I had Dungeon Master partially running in Cacko, I still have the ingame screenshots.
For some reason in this version of dosbox, when I launch the game, I cannot use the "monitor" selector.
I need to input the number (1) VGA or (2) EGA, but the selector disables these number keys.
I can type all numbers except 1 & 2 (I tried a lot of key combos)

I finally got the 1 and 2 keys working. I don't know how it worked, but I played the game awhile and made a save.
Later, I came back and tried the game again, and this game always asks you to select several things before starting, the 1 and 2 were gone this time.
It's a crapshoot, trying to input numbers 1 and 2 into this game's startup settings.

EDIT: Final edit, I think I figured out how to get Dungeon Master to load it's settings screen, so I can input the numbers 1 & 2 etc.
Reboot your Zaurus, then when 'X' is loaded, plug in your USB mouse, then launch dosbox.
Launch this game and input (1) - VGA, then make any other selections that come up.
(This game needs a mouse, and I remember now, that the Cacko version didn't load the mouse properly).
This game is actually playable.    I have sound turned off.

Anyone get a cdrom mounted in dosbox?
My cdrom mounts automatically in pdaxii13. Then I load dosbox.
It tells you how to mount the cdrom in the intro, but this is for windows only (I think)
it says to:
mount d D:\ -t cdrom
it also goes on and says to replace  D:\ with the location of your CD-ROM.
I tried
mount d /mnt/cdrom -t cdrom
and
mount d mnt\cdrom -t cdrom
and
mount d \mnt\cdrom -t cdrom

I have a game that needs installed on a DOS box, but I cannot run the installer on my windows XP box. Otherwise, I would just copy the entire directory over to my Zaurus.

EDIT:
I got it, I had already tried to mount the cdrom to /data/dos, so the following didn't work, and I wasn't sure how to unmount it.
So, I exited dosbox, and tried again, using this command. It worked.
mount d /mnt/cdrom -t cdrom

The instructions were a bit confusing at first.
Installing "Stonekeep" now.....
I won't go into the details, but Interplay's "Stonekeep" won't run on the Zaurus. Too many sound and CD-ROM related things.
I remember playing this about 10 yrs ago. It's a 1995 game.

I have a binary of 0.66rc3 that doesn't have the issue (X-mousepointer is gone while dosbox window is active). It doesn't work with the stylus - only with a mouse.

If none of the other packages have this, I could post this one for you but it probably won't be as optimized as the latest and the greatest by Meanie.

Just shout (on PM cause I don't read this thread every day).

One question meanie. Are the keyboard keys similar on this version as compared to wellswang's version. (in code below)
I'm asking this because it took me about 2 hours to figure out those key combinations.
Code: [Select]
For dosbox_0.70-iwmmxt (wellswang's version)
Right shift makes caps and some other hard to find chars

To get these characters - type these key combinations

 :  (Fn + Right Shift + g)        = colon
?  (Right Shift + /)             = question mark (dos wildcard)
 \  (Fn + Left Shift + /)         = back slash
 |  (Fn + Right Shift + /)        = pipe

 _  (Fn + Right Shift + -[dash])  = underscore
 @  (Right Shift + 2)             = at (@)
 ^  (Right Shift + 6)             = (^)
 &  (Right Shift + 7)             = ampersand
 *  (Right Shift + 8)             = asterisk (dos wildcard)
 (  (Right Shift + 9)             = left parenthesis
 )  (Right Shift + 0)             = right parenthesis

ctrl+fn+1 = keymapper (do this before changing to the C:\ directory)

I got meanie's dosbox installed
I'm always getting this character when making settings in a game that requires you to input (1) for VGA.
This is the first screen in the game.
When I type 1, I get the char in the screenshot.
I couldn't find this char anywhere and dosbox doesn't seem to be taking screenshots at the moment, so I drew the char by hand.
It looks like a (Lucida Console font - lowercase a) with an accent along the top of it.
is there an equivalent keyboard char that I can use to make this "input" the number 1 ?

I only get that character in dungeon master's setup screen.
wellswang's version doesn't do this all the time, so I went back to wellswang's version.
Also, meanie's version seems slower. The curser blinks a lot slower and typing into DOS has a delay.
In wellswang's version, typing in DOS is instantaneous and the curser blinks faster.
Title: Dosbox Package Issues

There is something going on with the keyboard in pdaxii13, when using dosbox.
Either meanie's version or wellswang's version.
Sometimes that strange character comes out when I type the number "1" in the game setup screen.
It seems to have something to do with the left shift key.
In wellswang's version, hitting this key produces a stream of ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I must hit the cancel button, or right shift to stop it.
If I don't touch anything, and type in the path to my dos mount, I get this:
mount c ,/data,/dos
I'm actually typing this:
mount c /data/dos
In meanie's version, hitting the left shift key produces this:
/

OK, back to the odd character in the game setup screen.
Sometimes, the number "1" on the keyboard just works.
When it doesn't work and produces that odd char, I can (randomly) hit key combinations, and the "1" will "magically" work.
I think I am doing this to get the "1" char onscreen by hitting these key combos:
[fn+1], [fn+shift+1], [ctrl+1],  [ctrl+shift+1], [fn+ctrl+shift+1 ], I now start getting a colon ":"
so I start hitting the colon/semicolon key combos.
Sooner or later, I can hit the "1" key again and IT WORKS!

I think that you may copy dosbox.conf in my version to ~/dosbox.conf
then install meanie's version and use meanie's version to load this config file for testing.
because I modified this config file for optimization on zaurus.
(the default settings of dosbox is for PC and not suitable to zaurus)
Code: [Select]
dosbox -conf ~/dosbox.conf
Title: Dosbox Package Issues

I already have memsize=16 in dosbox.conf

I'm going to continue to use the wellswang version, since meanie's is slower and I cannot get the number 1 to input into the game setup in meanie's version.
I still don't understand why the keyboard is whacky, I posted about this, 2 posts above.

EDIT:
I edited this post because some new questions were asked by someone else and I didn't want to continue with my small problem.

I found the solution to the accented "a" character problem in the game setup screen.
The left shift key is whaky in both meanie's and wellswang's versions.
The left shift is causing the problems
I'm not going into many details here because I think it just confuses people, and I haven't got any response to this problem.

In the game setup screen, when the number "1" produces that weird accented "a" char, another event is occurring.
Press (fn + left shift only), and that accented "a" will appear once.
It will not appear with this key combo again.
This seems to switch that odd behavior off.
Now when I press the number "1", I actually get a number "1"

I have some strange proglem when I run dosbox then after suspend, when I resume all input is not working, well not all mouse pointer is visible and react but no taps are recognized and no keyboard events. Need to reboot. I am using /mnt/card/swapfile 256 Mbytes and pdaxii13 5.3.3. Where can problem be? I was using melanie and wellswang dosbox ... same problem. I used swapoff -a before suspend and same result

Can anyone help?

I found that sometimes too.
Press Ctrl+Alt+backspace and wait 10-30 seconds and it will dump you out of X.
Fn+Ctrl+backspace (to exit you out of dosbox) might work too. Ithink it just takes a long time.

I tried to run - i does not mean that I played it :-)

Knights Of Xentar - seems to be playable! great! very good console like RPG.
Warcraft I - too slow but working.
UFO - enemy unknown ... working seem to me slow.

All without overclocking...

But overal I'm impresed.
Any possibility to speed it up a little bit?

should I start a compatibility/speed  list?

I have a feeling that our talented compilers have wrung out all the possible speed. We may have to wait till Dosbox 0.8

You could try to fiddle with dosbox.conf :
cycles = 2000 will give another result as cycles = 10000 and it all depends on the app you try to run.
Then you could also try frameskip = 1 (20fps) or frameskip = 2(10fps). default frameskip = 0 (32fps). When only half of the frames have to be displayed/rendered, you can gain a lot of speed.

A compatibility list should contain the best settings next to each app/game.

Chero.

I found the solution to the odd keyboard character problem
see post #112 (I edited it)
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=156955 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=23267&view=findpost&p=156955)

EDIT:
I now have dungeon Master working, but I am not using sound.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_Master_(computer_game) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_Master_(computer_game))
This is the DOS version of the FTL game. (you can find it at several abandonware sites)
The game plays at a very reasonable speed.
Do not "pause" the game for very long, because it will eventually freeze up.
I use the save game feature to pause, then if it freezes, I have a saved game.
I'm almost 99% certain I have found a solution to the VGA setup screen problem, where you need to type the number "1" to select VGA.
(see post #112)

hmmmm.. that could be what's leading to the freeze.
I guess it's good to keep in mind that if you are planning on putting your Zaurus down for a few minutes, then do a save first.

Wellswang... can you do a recompile with SDL sound support. You seem to have some sort of magic trick for getting Dosbox to run really fast, and it would be great to have sound support too (if id doesn't cause major slowdown)

Anyone get screenshots working in dosbox?
ctrl + F5 = screenshot or ctrl + F6 = screenshot
I tried these two settings in dosbox.conf

captures=capture
or
snapdir=snaps

These directories are in my DOS directory:  /data/dos
I have already created these directories.
Do I need to include the full Linux path to these directories in dosbox.conf?

/data/dos/capture
or
/data/dos/snaps
EDIT:
I edited this post because the dos.conf web site mentioned 2 options.
ctrl + F5 = screenshot or ctrl + F6 = screenshot

I will have a try to compile the latest version of SDL / SDL-mixer and etc.
but I'm not sure whether it can improve dosbox's sound support.

Not working ... I don't know where problem can be, but it seems to be something with swapfile. Even when I kill X from network it won't ends ... Z need to be restarted.

Already have them here: [a href=\"http://z.drun.net/packages/]http://z.drun.net/packages/[/url] (sdl* , including -devel packages)

They are optimized for iwmmxt, while not requiring it.

Try running "startx" from network, and when (if) X cursor shows, kill it with Ctrl + C. then you have your prompt back. At least most of the situations were solved for me that way.

It works! ... but what to do when network unavailable? reset? Only X are freezed totally. I haven't such problem on beta 1. Proably will migrate back.

New problem found with the latest dosbox package:
The comma / slash key does not produce any input.
Is this only the case on my installatoin, or is thie a general problem?
Is there any specific reason for that (key not mappable,...)?
Are the slash and comma mapped to another key?

I just tried once more to run Lotus 1-2-3 in DOSBox and partially succeeded, but without the slash key, the 1-2-3 menu is not reachable

Thanks
daniel

I'm using dosbox_0.70-iwmmxt_armv5tel.ipk posted in the new packages thread.
wellswang's version.
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=156742 (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=18415&view=findpost&p=156742)
It has one odd behavior.
Just after launching it, the '/' key produces this: '/,'
If I keep hitting this key several times I get this: /,/,/,/,/,/,
To stop this behavior, hit the left shift key (by itself). This key is also odd, and produces this: (with only one keystroke)
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (this keeps going until I hit backspace or the left shift key again, to stop it).
Once I stop the commas from trailing indefinitely, the left shift key and the '/' key work as they are supposed to work.
In other words, when first starting up this version of Dosbox, hit the left shift key once, then hit backspace, (to stop the trailing commas), then the (forward slash) '/' key works properly.

Anyone can solve issue with unsync mouse stylus cursor? It is not only dosbox problem, it is general problem with all emulators I've tied. I had this behavior also in hatari, uae, basilisk II emulators. When I connect USB mouse everything is OK, with stylus is cursor out of sync. Any experienced developer can find reason for this behaviour? It would help much to run emulators on Z. Anyone knows about similar problem in PPC emulators?

I find it quite astonishing but true, it is a near universal problem:

Linux: hatari, uae (although dosbox mostly works - at least I was able to run UFO: Enemy Unknown on it once)
Wince: dosbox, pocketdosbox, castce
Zaurus: dosbox, uae

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=159295\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

There are two problems that I've noticed.
a: mouse doesn't track touchpad position welll; either too slow or too fast
b: when pointer hits the edge (top, bottom, left, right) of screen,
calibration gets clobbered. Screen refresh, or switch in/out of full screen
     restores it temporarily

a:) is actually a dosbox mouse emulation detection bug:
Code: [Select]
in src/ints/mouse.cpp

Line: 423
Void Mouse_CursorMoved()

change:

   if (emulate) {

to

   if (!emulate) {
This seems to have been broken for a very long time; maybe someone could
contact the DosBox developers.
.........

The other problem I *think* is with SDL, since it affects most stuff that uses
the SDL libs, roughly the same.  I have not been able to track,
or to fix it.

..........

UFO has one other problem with DosBox;  major problems if DosBox is built with configuration:

   --disable-fpu

On the plus side, I haven't seen any significant speed hit from using DosBox with FPU emulation enabled, so it may be worthwhile for Zaurus package maintainers to
leave it turned on.

Anyway, even at 620mhz, it runs too slow (in tactical mode) to be very playable.

I can report, that Dune 2 - Battle for Arrakis / Buidling of a Dynasty
works quite well (without sound).
Real time strategy games for handhelds are very rare, so...

(C1000,BETA3,no overclocking,dosbox running without xserver)

Moonstone - a hard days knight
works, but with graphic-errors (somehow seems to switch to black&white sometimes)
