Title: too many guest in the forum....
Post by: jchung on March 09, 2004, 09:39:18 am
Is there a way to make it so that any guests that wish to post must put some type of name in username field?

I see too many threads with multiple posts by guest... but I dont know who these people are. I\'ve seen threads that seem like there are 2 guests posting, but I dont know one post from the other  :?

Why do you need to \"know who we are\"

I think it more so since somehow the username logged in by default gets logged out quite often and without knowing you have posted (thru the quick reply) and before you know it you (a registered member) are a guest.

I dont think that everyone really wants to post as a guest - its the unintentional log-out that causes this.

Oh and I caught it - before I do a submit, its actually me

See once you have written out a reply its too much of a pain to go back to login (i have been logged out this morning). so I am posting this as a guest

Why do you need to \"know who we are\"
It\'s not so much about knowing who you are specifically. If say for example a member is helping a guest with a problem and their setup/configuration is xyz, but then another guest comes along in the same thread and says \"I\'ve got a similar problem, but my setup/configuration is abc\" it gets very confusing with who you are talking to.

The Desktop Linux distro or version of Windows you are running and the Zaurus ROM you are using, etc can all adversely affect problems and solutions. That\'s why its also nice when members put their setup in their signature, so then you don\'t have to bother keep asking or looking at the first page of a long thread for what they are using.

I agree.  Perhaps it would be useful to a have warning page when you\'re going to post as \"guest\", which would stop us signed up users from doing so.

As for guests posting, since the sign up is so simple and asks for NO sensitive information, I really don\'t know why anybody would post without signing up.  If I were ORG, I might require signing up in order for a user to post, but that\'s just me.

My big point as to people signed in a guest, I tend to trust some peoples opinions herre a little better than others.
Knowing the source helps discern fact from fiction.

I used to post as guest before I decided I liked to forum enough to register.  Part of it is a time/convenience issue,if I\'m just surfing doesn\'t want to register just to post an opnion to some board I might never visit again, and there have been plenty of times when a board wanted me to register that I just didn\'t bother.  I\'ve seen lots of valuable contributions by guests here, and I hope the site admins will allow that to continue.

I do agree though that its too easy to post as guest accidently.  I think an \"are you sure\" confirmation would be helpful.  Also, it would be nice if logging in returned you to the same thread.  Right now, after logging in you go back to the homepage regardless of what you were previously browsing.

Good point, DrWowe - some people certainly will decide it isn\'t worth the effort, especially if they\'re just interested in figuring out if they want a zaurus or not.  As for z owners, I can\'t imagine why someone would prefer to stay guest (we\'re anonymous regardless), but everyone has their own prefs.

Since pretty much all other sites that I\'ve posted at require a login to post, I didn\'t even try posting as a guest here.  I guess I\'m just used to that from other sites.

Greg - I would have to guess that the user population is considerably larger now than in December with DevNet\'s death - a vote would be interesting!

n8a...

I think that some Guests \"guessed\" that they were logged in. I see quite a few who immediately respond with a signed in apology!

I\'d like to try and get a guage to see how much this really happens....   I use  Opera or firefox on a windows box at work, and once I\'m logged in, it seems to remember me for a good week or two before I have to log in again.

I also log into the site via my suse box at home with opera again, and with either opera or netfront on my 760.  All of which remember my log in with little to no failure.

Personally, I would suggest that we disable the quick reply feature, which would allow all guests to see the \"username\" field in the post reply window.

And like the devnet, we could also allow guest posts only in certain forums.  That way if you\'re try to post, and you\'re not logged in, then you will be prompted to.

I see one possible problem with this last suggestion - these forums that allow guest posts will become the primary/busy forums.  Meaning people will just post there instead of registering and posting to the correct forum.

Lastly, we could easily take a poll on this, but guests are not allowed to vote in polls, so it may not allow for an accurate representation of our user base.

Either way, whatever the majority decides, we\'ll implement it.

Yes, I know from experience!  Yet there are still quite a few users here that I bet are regulars but haven\'t obtained a login for one reason or another.  In any case, this board works well, and I for one would be upset to lose the quick reply!  That\'s dang convenient!  However, if that\'ll resolve the oops!  guest posts, then I\'m all for it.

Hi
I must take (blame) for being one of the \"guests\". Never did change the password when signed up and when I logged out, didn\'t go back through emails to remember , so just posted some as guest. I\'ll be more cognizant to signon when posting.

I agree with the thread, as I\'m sure most of the other \"guests\" do.
This bulletin board rocks.

Or, the more simple answer, add another box to the quick reply area requesting a name. (Any will do.)

Don\'t accept the post until a name has been put in. That way it gets easier to keep track but no regestration is required.

I wouldn\'t have bothered joining this forum if I had to register to ask my first few questions. And the quick reply box makes it much easier to answer questions quickly when pressed for time )

I always use the quick reply and never have had a post go in as \"guest\". I am using Mozilla on Fedora & Win XP, as well as IE on WinXP and on Fedora using Crossover.
I do like the idea of guests only being able to post in certain topics as well.

I think posts should REQUIRE ownership.  Whether it\'s advice, flames, questions, or anything else, we should each be afforded the opportunity to guage the veracity of each post by our estimation of the accuracy/relevence of the poster\'s PREVIOUS posts.  Anonymous flames are bogus, IMO, so is anonymous advice.

Just my $.02.

Using mozilla, I get logout whitout knowing in about 1hr; also, the autologin feature doesn\'t seem to work =] usually I end up posting as guest, since the quick reply option seems very useful to me.

... and for the really paranoid (like me :-) ) you can use a Spamgourmet (http://www.spamgourmet.com) e-mail address to register, so it doesn\'t matter too much if anyone breaks into the board\'s database and steals the addresses.

I rely heavily on the quick reply feature. I would prefer that we disable guest posting completely. It doesn\'t take long to register with the forums and your email address is never given to anyone, it\'s just for verification purposes.

I still think guest posting should be allowed. We don\'t have a particular troll problem and if people were forced to give some kind of description to themselves (but still be guests) that would be fine imho.

It\'s true that it doesn\'t take long to register but it\'s still a pain for people who are thinking about getting a Z but haven\'t got one yet and so are only after a quick question, etc.

Since it seems that many would like to maintain the ability to post as guest (and there\'s no troll prob), may I suggest:
When you click submit in the quick reply and are not logged in, you get directed to a page to the effect of \"You are not logged in.  Please log in or click on GUEST to post this message as a Guest.
- Login fields
- GUEST button

That would at least stop the accidental guest posts.  Of course, I don\'t have to implement this so it\'s easy to postulate!

great suggestion... but since that would require more than a simple hack (basically beyond my php skills), I would like to know if there are any php/mysql developers our there that would be willing to work with me on this?  I would be willing to pay a reasonable fee for their time.  please pm or email me if interested.

thanks

What about adding a name text box just above the Quick Reply box if you are not logged in?

So then it is easy to see whether you are logged in (no name box visible) or not when using the Quick Reply.

I\'m not PHP developer either but I wouldn\'t have thought that would be a hard change and it\'s better than having yet another intermediate page. Plus you could stop people from posting without any name or names like \'guest\' and give a brief explanation of why (so we can tell who\'s who when trying to help with problems/queries in a thread full of guests).

When I\'m logged on I see the following:

FAQ   Search   Memberlist   Usergroups
Profile   You have no new messages   Log out [ tapjpa ]
Minimize   Go to Administration Panel

At the top of the page. Notice it has my name following the logout option.
Isn\'t this basicly here already?[/img]

Obviously some people are missing all this and just look at the Quick Reply box. If there\'s something right next to that box that indicates the person is not logged on it would be nice. But this is also about making it easy for guests to still post as guests, yet identify their posts.

I always use the quick reply too - its the best feature of this board maybe.
So Offroadgeek, don\'t take that away.

As for inadvertant logouts - it happens to me like once a week, or sometimes twice in a week. Otherwise it seems perfect (like this morning).

I wouldn\'t want the guest posting to go either, since its true that many first-comers to the forum would want to post without registering rightaway, but lets all follow and try to instill the etiqutte of logging in and posting.

On the other-hand I must say I love the guest feature for those times when I want to vent my anger and tongue lashing at some jerk who keeps repeating some banal arguments without making any points and adding aything to the discussion - those occasional monday-morning-blues induced aggresiveness and tendency to just snap at something for the heck of it - oh wicked me.

Exactly my point for wanting to kill guest posting, but at the same time I fully understand, it can be fun to take out ones agression for some poor unsuspecting newb

The above info is only obvious if you scroll to the top of the page.  Since offroadgeek fixed the \"go to new post\" thingie, I never see the top of the page when I click on a  link in the e-mail that notifies me of a new post.  That is when I am often not logged in, since it is a new browser window started from my mail client.

I do think that warning/option to post as Guest is a good one.  Since you are going to be hacking to get this, how about \"Post as Guest and add Name\"?  You do not have to register to post, but allows you to be other than \"Guest\" (one of 6874932674682934689)?

I understand that the fact of this info being on the top of the page makes it oblivious to most people.
The point I was attempting to make was that the fact that the info was available on top hopefully means
that it would be simple to duplicate this on the bottom where it is most likey to be seen.
Possible?

I think gusts shouldn\'t be allowed to post exept in the general disscution area. it makes the forum all clutered with guest posts. i don\'t see why the email adress thing should even be an issue. if poeple dont want spam (which is unlkely any ways) they should just get a free yahoo or hotmail adress. i do it and it workes great.
