hello
i'm thinking about a umts/hsdpa modem for my zaurus.
as all CF modems are only gprs, i'm thinking about an USB HSDPA modem :

do you think this can work with the zaurus, i mean about power consumtion and modem drivers ?

as far as I know, these should work as they also work on Mac OSX; I think they behave as some sort of USB serial device.
there's a good chance you'd need more usb power, but a battery powered hub might suffice?
maybe you can get to borrow one to evaluate, if so, please do let us know what happens!

There is no info on that page about power requirements. Contact mftr before you buy to find out and compare to the known power output of your CF slot.
On my sl5500, I run a standard CF dialup modem, and am wondering if it is true that all CF modems are gprs. I couldn't get clear info googling it.

It only specifically mentions the "Zaurus SL-C3000" with a vague reference to "Other PDAs".
Also says it requires a "CD-ROM drive" to prepare operating environment for C01S".
So may only be compatible with certain Zaurii. And I don't really understand what it is, both a modem and the drivers?

Update :
on seiko compatibility list (http://www.sii.co.jp/vc/text/e/maker/sharp.html) they say " *The utility software for Zaurus is not offered. Please make connection from the dial-up in Zaurus. For details, please see the instructions of SL-C3000, or ask SHARP corporation."
That tends to imply that the card is seen as a serial device, wich mean it's probably recognized on all rom

' Select "Obtain DNS server address
automatically" option in the "DNS
Server Settings" screen...'
As a regular dial-up user with a standard CF modem, I had LOTS of trouble with timing out when I tried connecting to my ISP, using automatic DNS address detection.
If you are using dialup, this is a heads up that putting in a precise DNS address (which I obtained from Customer Support at my ISP in the U.S.), made a HUGE difference in my ability to get online.
They just talk about being SL series compatible. Another heads up is that if you use a CF modem and respawning of ttyS0 happening, getting online can be a bear on Qtopia-based ROMs (Sharp, Cacko, etc). See my writeup about disabling respawning of ttyS0 at:

I am trying to use the Huawei e220 on my C1000 (cack0 lite). lsusb recognises the device and I get a /dev/ttyUSB0 device. How do I setup a network connection to use it ?

you should be able to treat is a just another serial device; as root check if the /dev/modem device exists and if not make a link
cd /dev
ls -la modem
ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/modem
you should now be able to use regular ppp diallup scripts to connect, many fine examples here on forums.
also try installing minicom, then running "minicom -s", change the serial port to be /dev/ttUSB0, then enter "AT" to see if you get an OK, then try "ATD01234567;" and see if it dials your number.

How about running 'lsmod' to confirm your Z recognizes the module? You might need one compiled specific for your hardware. Did you already do that?

lsusb lists nothing. I think I assumed as there was a ttyUSB0 the e220 had been recogniesed.
I did some testing last night with a GPRS Motorola phone that my UBUNTU laptop sees as a generic USB modem. The Z finds it shows it as a device in systeminfo, but I cannot see which device its using again ttyUSB0 cannot be found.
Unfortunatly, I have no idea where to start compiling my own driver fr the Z. Though I have compiled stuff on my laptop for the e220 to make it stable and usable.

Update. I think there is an issue with my USB support. I can mount USB Drives even my mobile phone micro SD. But nothing else. I have tried two mice, both are "seen" in systeminfo, but the icon has a warning triangle as if the driver is not loaded, and the UsbMouse applet does not find a mouse mousedev not found?
Any Ideas what I've messed up?

You didn't say if you did an lsmod, which lists all modules.
Do you mean the Z recognized ttyUSB0? Did you look at /etc/fstab? And which of your Z's are you doing this on? I can say from experience that drivers for one Z won't necessarily work for another model of Z. And the sl5500 is known to not have a USB host controller, so a module alone won't do it on the collie if that's where you are trying.
Capn_Fish only does pdaXrom stuff, but maybe he would know where to get module source code.

All this is on a C1000 with cacko 1.23 lite. I dont have access to my Z at the mo, but will do some posts when I get back to it.

Do you have any extra modules installed that have "lite" in their filename?
Look in the cacko feed for this file or similar files with "lite" in their name.
usb-serial-modules-2.4.20_1.23-lite-1_arm.ipk
Any file with "lite" in the filename, are "missing" in cacko lite, and need to be installed if needed.
Sorry if you already know this, it' just a suggestion.

hmmm. are you plugging the usb device directly into the Z or using an external hub with a separate power supply? I've seen a few times when a usb device only partly functions if there's not enough power

all with no hub. My aim is to use the e220 0n the move. As it draws little power (less than my phone which works - the phone also charges on usb) and all the lights flash as if the e220 is up I thing (hope) it will work.

I hope that if I can get the phone to work as a modem then getting the e220 to work woud just be a case of reloading usbserial (which is how it works on UBUNTU)

OK been doing some research, the e220 has some strange driver requirments that needs patching on older kernals so this is not a good buy for a Zaurus. It may be that someone who knows how to hack this could get it up and running on the Z I can hope ;0)

this says that e220 should work on kernel > 2.6.19 !
so perhaps you should try under modern zaurus distros like Angstrom or Debian !

Can you please document what you've tried in terms of physical cables and settings within Cacko?
I've just acquired a Huawei modem on the 3 network and it works right out of the box with my new Asus eeePC (great device but no plans to ditch the Z just yet!). It would be great to get it working on my 3100 as the modem will just squeeze into the top of my Piel Frama Z case! I'm currently back on Cacko after flirting with BSD and OZ. Angstrom was too bleeding-edge last time I looked but migth be prepared to give it another go if I can get some time.

vodafone applet is too slow to load, not worthy imho.
Mine is from vodafone, have been using on laptop for a while but for sure ebay is your friend on it.

I use host cable to connect to powered HUB and connect modem to HUB, needing a powered HUB ties you to a power source if you don't have a battery powered HUB (each day harder to find )

unfortunately we've now got an on-call scheme at work, but it does mean we have a 3G modem - it's the Vodafone-UK branded Huawei thumb-stick one:

colleague couldn't make the E172 work with his ubuntu laptop with kernel 2.6.24.2. Meanwhile I am using Suse10.3 with my own 2.6.24.2 kernel (to get toshiba bluetooth acpi patches) and I put it in, got the usb mass storage which worked AND the ttyUSB* devices, use the ppp files above and it worked first time. My laptop at home is running stock suse 10.3 and it didn't, so I conclude that the later kernel is what fixed it.
so, next step, install angstrom on zaurus again and see if I can use a powered hub and make the thing work!

Yes. Except you need more power. I have a camera battery (4 volts) is directly connected to the
5 volt USB-line. Does not consume much, but there are 300mA power burst that Zaurus cannot
produce.

I have not read all the posts in this thread, but it looks like none of you have managed to actually use
the Huawei in Zaurus?
I have standard Sharp Rom and usually it recognizes the device only as storage.

These devices are a weird composite USB thing, doing mass storage as well as serial ports; there's a tool called usbswitcher which tells it to change from one mode to the other.
I think the theory is that it means Huawei could ship the devices with the drivers and apps on it rather than having a separate CDROM. In practise, everyone needs the CDROM anyway to get started, unless you're using a very recent linux kernel which supports them!

I have not read all the posts in this thread, but it looks like none of you have managed to actually use

I just bought an external battery from Brando - 2400mAh - and am getting a tiny USB hub so that I can attach a 3G modem and a 2nd card reader at the same time!
