There's a broken link to pdaXii13-custom.tgz on http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/pdaxii13.html (http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/pdaxii13.html)
I would like to upgrade my beta3 C1000 to pdaXii13 using the method explained on Meanie's page but have only found a pdaXii13-custom.tgz which does not seem to contain "install-fix-beta3.sh". It only contains one file - pdaXii13-custom. I found THAT file at http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13...ii13-custom.tgz (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/build/pdaXii13-custom.tgz) but it seems to be the wrong one.
When I give the command ./install-fix-beta3.sh / upgrade with this file, it says "No such file or directory
Anyway, I would like to have the latest and greatest pdaXii13-custom.tgz, if possible.
Can someone direct me to the correct file url?
Thanks.
Edit: I had extracted pdaXii13-custom.tgz on my Windows machine and so it did not extract completely. After I extracted on the Z, the installation started but it complained that startx is still running and so did not install. I thought if I exited using "exit" on the start button and got a # prompt I was out of startx. I guess not. So how do I install this file "outside of startx". I'm a Linux dummy. :-(
-
I wish I could attach pics and files.
I downloaded http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13...ii13-custom.tgz (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/build/pdaXii13-custom.tgz)
I opened it in winrar on my windows box and there is only one folder inside the *.tgz, it's called "custom"
I extracted this folder without any problems. (there are 202 files/folders inside, 22MB total)
Try downloading it again.
Also, install-fix-beta3.sh is inside the custom folder.
I haven't tried this method of upgrading, I have only reflashed new versions as they were released.

Thanks, Jon, I DID discover that I had to install from within the "custom" folder but it always says that "X is running" and so it won't continue the installation. How do I get OUT of X in order to install this thing??? I thought I WAS out of it. Although sometimes I get thrown to the Login: rather than the prompt, but even when I get only the prompt it says "X is still running."

I'm not sure, look at meanie's page, does it say to boot to console? or use the pdaxii13 installer, (which has a chooser to use a console)
I thought you had a corrupt file because you said you couldn't extract it in windows.
-
Well, I was using Ultimate Zip by right-clicking on the file and extracting it in Windows, but it only extracted down one level to the pdaXii13-custom file. When I opened the file WITHIN UltimateZip, it extracted everything fine.
At any rate, how do I "boot to console"? I have changed my setup to boot directly into the gui by following directions posted on the forum somewhere and so can't "boot to console" any longer. I thought I could do the same thing by choosing "exit" from the App Launcher, but it keeps saying "X is still running."
Can I reboot and stop the process somehow to get to a prompt outside of the gui?
Thanks.

there are several ways to get a pure console.
1. is to use emergency mode.
2. meanie says that if you run his pdaxii13 install files, you can select a console from within the installer.
You don't have to install anything, just follow instructions as if you want to install pdaxii13, then choose terminal or console. there is a selection for it on the installer menu.
EDIT: look on meanie's page for fsck
This is where he explains several ways to get to a console. (so you can run fsck without the HDD being mounted)
EDIT2: If I recall correctly, doesn't the pdaxrom beta3 installer have an option to open a console? (similar to the pdaxii13 installer)
-
Pressing CTRL + ALT(Japanese key right of Fn key) + backspace should kill the x11 server and leave you at the console login prompt.

I know about that also, but isn't this the same as hitting the "Exit" icon on the 'X' menu in the GUI?
I'm thinking not everything is shutting down when tombraider exits pdaxrom via the 'X' menu's Exit icon
-
Tried that and it gives a message that x server is shut down but when I try to execute the install script, it STILL says that "X is running".
I'm giving up for now. It looked like an easy way to get Meanie's fixes on my beta3 C1000 without having to flash, but I can't get it to work.
Thanks for the help..

did you try any of the other console methods mentioned above?
I'm not really certain, because I haven't tried this type of upgrade, but I was thinking the console you get in emergency mode would not give you an error about X running.
EDIT: maybe meanie will read this later and have some tips.
-
What is "emergency mode"? I know how to get to the Japanese update menu and how to get to the backup nand menu but what is the "emergency menu". How do you get to it?
Edit: Nevermind, I figured out how to do it, but when I got to the console in Emergency, it said the cf card was not in /etc/fstab and so would not read it.
I already have just about all the tweaks anyway including daylight savings and no military time so I don't think I will bother.
I just am lacking the keyboard settings and the card applet does not show USB drives...other than that and a Samba gui, I'm doing all right. :-)

there was a simple typo in the install script
it is fixed now
-
Meanie,
Thanks for your reply.
I redownloaded the file from http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13...ii13-custom.tgz (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/build/pdaXii13-custom.tgz) and extracted it to my cf card and tried the installation again using the exit from the applauncher to get out of x and I still get the same error message "error: X is still running!"
Could it be because I am running ROX on my desktop?
I'll try ctrl alt backspace but I think it will be the same problem.
The following is what displays when I try to execute the file:
pdaXii13 patcher (build5.32)
--current model is SL-C1000
./install-fix-beta3.sh: line 11: MODEL: command not found
-- your model is good to go.
Continue? (y/n) y

error: X is still running!
-
Have you tried
killall X
?
-
Just tried that and it doesn't work. Same error message. I must have something odd going on with my setup since no one else has the problem. I have tweaked the heck out of it.
Thanks for the suggestion.

As a last resort, try the emergency console again and mount your CF card manually
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/cf
or
mount/dev/hdc1 /mnt/cf
In your case, since you don't have a hard drive, I think the first one should work.
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/cf

give up on the idea of trying the emergency console already. there is a bug in the script and unless that is fixed, nothing will work...
-
Thanks, Meanie, let me tell you that your amazing work is greatly appreciated and you should concentrate your efforts on the most pressing issues and not be concerning yourself with unimportant issues regarding pdaXii13.
So, please, don't spend any time on my little problem. I'll just do a complete reflash when I see there is a really stable version out there.

Hopefully since joining the pdaXrom dev team, Meanie is working on a fully functional 2.6 version, pdaXii13-ng or pdaXrom-works.
-
pdaXii13-custom.tgz has been fixed and works now. This is not a trivial issue because this script is used to update and build the pdaXii13 images, so without it working properly there wont be updated and working builds of pdaXii13...
-
Just tried it and there's no "x is still running" but just got a huge run of errors saying it can't find paths. It's looking in /upgrade/usr/share/pixmaps/zbackup.png, for instance, when the path should be maybe /upgrade/custom/pixmaps/zbackup.png or /custom/pixmaps/zbackup.png? I don't know enough to know which it should be...hopefully, you do??
Errors like this:
cp: unable to open '/upgrade/usr/share/pixmaps/suspend.png: No such file or directory
ALL directories are wrong, of course, not just pixmaps. I'm just giving that as an example.

it looks like you ran

./install-fix-beta3.sh / upgrade
-
Hmmm, you're right Okay, I also had to cd to the "custom" directory in order to get the ./install-fix-beta3.sh / upgrade command to work.
It started updating everything but still gave the following errors after a long string of successful updates:
cp: unable to open 'usr/bin/Xdialog' : no such file or directory
chmod: /usr/bin/Xdialog: no such file or directory
..updating /usr/lib
..updating /usr/share
cp: unable to open '/usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png': no such file or directory
chmod: /usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png: no such file or directory
cp: unable to open '/usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png' : no such file or directory
I have Firefox installed on my sd card which I disabled before the install so maybe that's what generated that error.
Okay, at first glance all seems okay...items in taskbar are different from my previous settings; aterm has the "root-" prompt and my previous inputs are gone - fresh start.
Will try everything bit by bit and get back to you. Maybe will get back to you tomorrow on this if I run out of steam tonight. :-) Looks good so far.
Thanks.

Accidentally hit the on/off switch and am having the old problem of not being able to start it up again. Tried hitting "home" - doesn't work; tried "on/off" and sometimes get a flicker but no joy. Maybe time to reset.

moved post back, since meanie replied to it here.
I had to cd to the appropriate directory twice to get this working.
Original instructions below:
----------------------------
# mkdir /mnt/cf/upgrade
# zcat pdaXii13-custom.tgz | tar xvf - -C /mnt/cf/upgrade
# cd /mnt/cf/upgrade
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/sd stop
# ./install-fix-beta3.sh / upgrade

# mkdir /mnt/cf/upgrade

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/sd stop
# cd /mnt/cf/upgrade/custom
# ./install-fix-beta3.sh / upgrade
-------------------------------------
I only got one error upon install, and it was something like this.
wrong model detected - zaurus model OK
continue?
Y - N
I had a custom clock that got replaced. Now I'm back to military time (24 hr clock)
Some of my custom icons were replaced by the ones that meanie had in the original flash install.
My "Style" was changed back, I prefer "Artwiz because the titlebars are larger.
The taskbar along the bottom needs to be re-populated with the apps I had put there.
Other than that, everything looks fine. smile.gif
version: pdaxii13 build5.3.3 (Charlie) It still identifies my Zaurus as Borzoi, not Terrier. No big deal here.
(I kinda liked the name Sally better, she was one hot chick) smile.gif
EDIT: edited the cd /mnt/cf/upgrade/custom line to be just before executing the install.
EDIT2: one more thing, the screenshot icon *.png file either got deleted or returned back to prior akita install with no icon for this.
I had to add this icon myself. Also I installed scrot and any dependencies to get *.png screenshots.
The screencap icon shows a ripped piece of paper instead of the correct one. This is in gqview.
-
ok, the directory for the files is trival, i will correct that when i can...
however, your zaurus model is a worry. it should show the correct model. yours seems completely wrong because you should had ended up with Sally. Charlie is for corgi models, ie 7x0/8x0
Sally is for all the akita based models, ie C1000/C3100/C3200
checked the screenshot image. its the wrong image and will be replaced with the correct one....

That is identical to my C3100, I just checked. All the numbers are exactly the same.

Maybe that's why I was getting (Alice) the other day when I checked the version.
Mine still says (Charlie) I have rebooted again since install.
EDIT: I must have a hybred. That means I don't have the newer processor?
I heard the C3200 processor was changed. maslovsky mentioned it somewhere.

That is identical to my C3100, I just checked. All the numbers are exactly the same.
cat /proc/cpuinfo
Maybe that's why I was getting (Alice) the other day when I checked the version.
Mine still says (Charlie) I have rebooted again since install.
EDIT: I must have a hybred. That means I don't have the newer processor?

try again with the latest pdaXii13-custom.tgz
it should say Sally if successful...
as for your Terrier being reported as Borzoi problem, I would need a tarball of a original SharpROM install in order to troubleshoot, you need to flash/nand restore your 3200 to default factory state and tar up everything.

Thanks for the reply meanie.
I'll try again with the latest pdaXii13-custom.tgz
I don't think I have a backup NAND of my original Sharp install.
This was a brand new Zaurus, and I have NANDs from Conics, Trisoft, and Cresho, for when I would flash back to Sharp.
I flashed to pdaxrom on the second or third day after getting this Zaurus.
I did manage to get the text2speech copied into a zip file before I flashed it. That's about it.
Starting the upgrade.
--current model is SL-C3200
--your model is good to go.
Continue? (y/n)
I think this message is different from last time.
Install done, I had to disable sticky-keys
It says "Sally"
/proc/cpuinfo
permission denied
I forgot the "cat"
cat /proc/cpuinfo
Sharp Borzoi
It's still the same as before.
Is that a Sharp installed file? or could the first install of pdaxrom beta3 have caused this?

Just a quick reply. Will post more details later.
Agree with Jon on install instructions. My non-military time got trashed also. In fact I had NO time on the taskbar. Could not get it back by using taskbar "add" or App Launcher. Fixed it by clicking on the clock applet program icon itself using Rox. Clock appeared on taskbar with military time. Went into ~/.matchbox/mbdock.session and added "-m" to th clock line; closed out of x, restarted x and had my non military time back. Thread on how to get non-military time here (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=22596&hl=military) .
SERIOUS problems:
1. XMMS has broken audio. All mp3's have sound that breaks up. At first I thought since I was streaming over my network, it was just over the network, but I played a local mp3 and it was the same horrid playback. XMMS starts up faster now though. :-) Is this broken for others or just my C1000? Worked great on previous tweaked setup. On an aside, why is the volume in pdaXrom so low at the top setting compared to Cacko Rom over the Z speaker? I think it's okay if you plug in headphones just very low over the Z speaker.
Edit: Cancel this, tried XMMS this morning and it seems fine...must have been some aberration.
2. On/off from a suspend doesn't work again. Hitting home key, turns on my wireless card light right away, but it takes like 15-20 seconds (an eternity in Z time) to show the desktop. My previous beta3 tweaked setup, the on/off and home key turned it on almost instantly.
edit: Oh, the install flies by so could not get anything but an overall impression - very nice, informative. Noticed a long string of "adding apps from the sdcard" went by TWICE for some reason.
Lots to like about the whole installation. Niceties like a box which pops up to tell you it's okay to remove cf or card is great.
edit: Zoom and Brightness keys do not work for me. Tried super key and 1 and 2, super key and 3 and 4. Will try to apply the fix I found on this site (http://www.thesounddesign.com/zaurus/beta3.htm) .
pdaXii13-custom.tgz has been fixed and works now. This is not a trivial issue because this script is used to update and build the pdaXii13 images, so without it working properly there wont be updated and working builds of pdaXii13...

I think these two may actually be related. I had been running pdaxrom beta3 for some time, and more recently I moved to a version of pdaxii13 (don't remember the exact build version, but it looks like I downloaded it on Feb 9).
On both of these, I had some apps installed to my SD card. The apps all worked, waking from suspend usually took 2-3 seconds, and reboots would take a minute or two (never actually timed it).
When I upgraded to pdaxii13 build 5.3.3, I also installed the "full package" of apps to my SD card. I figured I had the free space on the card and it would give me a chance to play with some of the apps I hadn't tried yet. (BTW, really nice job on this, Meanie! Spectrum24 support and gobs of other wonderful fixes!)
The first thing I noticed was that when I rebooted, there was a process running that seemed to be creating all the links to the SD-installed apps. At least that what I assumed it was doing. This took a looong time... possibly ten minutes. I got tired of waiting and came back when it was done. I also assumed that this was a one-time operation.
I played with the Zaurus, suspended it, and then tried to wake it some time later. It was unrespsonsive for an extended period of time. I reset it, thinking something wasn't working. It ran through the whole list of apps again when it rebooted. (I guess it wasn't a one-time operation, after all!)
Again, I suspended the Z and the next time I tried waking it I still wasn't getting a response. I decided to wait. Eventually it woke up. After a little investigating, it appears that the Z is ejecting the cards at suspend and remounting them upon waking. And at every remount, it runs through the entire list of SD-installed apps and it looks like it's recreating the links to those apps.
I removed the scripts for ejecting and remounting the cards. I'm already in the habit ejecting CF cards prior to suspending, and the SD card is never removed. I'm now back to a resume time of a couple seconds.
But I'm still curious what process is running through all the installed apps. And why is this feature now enabled, when I never noticed this before. I didn't have nearly as many installed apps previously, but even before I installed the "mother lode" I noticed significantly slower resume times with build 5.3.3 than I now have after disabling those scripts. I'm nearly positive that beta 3 was not processing all those files at every boot up and certainly not at every resume.
Is this "new" process necessary? And what, exactly, is it doing?
-
I'm kinda wondering about what, exactly, it is doing as well--though regarding somthing different.
I flashed and installed the 5.3.3 hd image.
I can't seem to install and use software--- except, weirdly, kphone. SOmething is off in the mounts, links or PATH--though it all looks ok if I check $PATH or mount. If i do ipkg insatll packagename (even using various destinations and different packages) it LOOKS like it installs ok, but for the most part the packages disappear. some show up on /mnt/ide which somehow is different from /media/fakeroot despite what "mount" says about /dev/hda1 being /usr and also being /media/fakeroot and doesn't say about being /mnt/ide at all.
I'm reflashing to double check.
the odd thing is everything I've tried (the stuff that came in the hdimage) works great.
looking, amazingly enough, like I had a bad flash. huh.

but hdimage 5.3.3 does not exist yet... it is going to be generated and uploaded in a few hours time...
-
ok--I had grabbed the latest of the flash image and the hdimage. Sytem said, I thought, 5.3.3 after a "bad" flash. says 5.2 now. The path thing I solved by editing ipkg.conf --brilliant of me o try that, I know
all is welll. so now I will get the new images and do it again.
eventually I will actually get around to trying to compile Nvu.... which was how I got into this whole "flash it and use the latest of meanie's squashfs setups" to begin with.
-
remember that pdaXii13-custom.tgz can be used to upgrade existing pdaXii13 installs to the latest patch level, and/or upgrade pdaXrom beta1/beta3 system to pdaXii13...
-
lmao. I wasn't sure if it did or not--- reflashed entirely. I hadn't entered much data since the last flash, and I wanted to put my nand / partition back up to 121 anyway.

its all good as long as it works
btw, c7x0 and c8x0 can also be upgraded to pdaXii13 base...

Meanie, I'm currently using beta3 (haven't had the nerve to try pdaXii13 because my beta3 setup is working nicely), and just wanted to report that "cat /proc/cpuinfo" also says I have a SHARP Borzoi instead of a Terrier. I flashed immediately to pdaXrom when I got my C3200 (I never even booted into the original Sharp ROM) so I don't know if it was correct before.
Although you have fixed the issue, I just thought I'd point this out -- it may be a beta3 installation thing (or maybe SHARP messed up -- but doubtful).

thanks for the info. i am starting to believe that its a beta 3 thing and that the 3200 is so similar to 3100, it is just treated like it. btw, when you plug your c3200 to your pc via usb, what does your pc say is connected? c1000?

Yes, you are correct -- it is recognized as a C1000 when plugged into a Windows PC (didn't try it on my Linux box but I would obviously expect the same result). I've actually never hooked it up to my PC until just now to test.

well, it is confirmed then. C1000 and all C3x00 models will be detected as C1000 when plugged in as a USB client device, ie USB storage/ndis client with beta3. In pdaXii13, C3000 will be detected as C3000 but C1000, C3100, C3200 will be detected as C100 0 also I only changed the C3000
Also, in pdaXrom beta3 (and also pdaXii13), C3100 and C3200 will say that they are Borzoi while C3000 will say it is Spitz in pdaXii13. Not sure what C1000 says, but I assume it is Borzoi as well?
The dog name comes from the binary /sbin/writerominfo which gets executed at boot time. The akita flash in pdaXrom is sharing the same binary for all akita based models and hence will report the same name. I replaced writerominfo for pdaXii13 Spitz with the writerominfo from the original Sharp ROM for C3000 so it correctly says Spitz, otherwise it probably would had said Borzoi as well...
As for the USB storage/ndis name when you connect your Z to a PC, this name comes from storage_fd.o and net_fd.o. I replaced those two for pdaXii13 Spitz so it says C3000, but all other akita based flash files, both pdaXrom beta3 and pdaXii13 akita will say C1000.
If you want your model to be correctly shown, then get those two modules from your original Sharp ROM or tetsu's modules ipk file for your model and replace them.
