Disaster struck during my vacation and my beloved Z was stolen in Prague, Czech Republic. Watch out if you see one for sale shipping from there. It has a sled and a 6GB Hitachi HD plus tons of accessories including: Trendnet CF Ethernet Adapter, several CF/SD cards,Haicom GPS CF Card, spare battery, several zip-link cables, several other items, including car charger, etc. Would appreciate a heads up if any one finds it for sale somewhere. You can e-mail me via the webmaster address on My Webpage (http://www.akiaki.org), or just post it here.
TIA and watchout for your stuff if you ever get close to Czech Republic!!!

Sorry to hear of your loss.

How'd it get stolen?
-
crap! one of my fears realized by someone else. Hopefully, a good semeritine produces it.
-
I offer my sympathies.
I'm generally paranoid about my Z getting stolen and I know how much it sucks to unexpectedly lose something that you rely on, like the Zaurus. I wish you luck in getting it back.
-
I feel for you. I don't know what I'd do it I lost my Z or it got stolen.

Definitely can sympathize... I recently had my C3000 stolen along with (much) other stuff. In the good ol' USA - an office setting no less.
Did you have any kind of insurance? Maybe you could file a claim. That's what I ended up doing and it was enough to get a replacement, although not another Zaurus (a conscious decision on my part based on future product line).
I know that doesn't really make up for the loss and all the feelings that go along with it, but with the claim you could possibly get another unit.
Hopefully all your data was backed up on another machine.

P.S. I highly recommend getting insurance. It's something I've done with any electonic device I carry with me. The deductible is much lower than homeowner's insurance. I went with safeware.com, but I'm sure there are other isnurers out there.

Oh man, that's too bad. A sled too, huh? I feel for you. I've never even
seen a sled in real life, and am somewhat ticked off at Sharp for discontinuing
them. I'm sorry for your loss...

Thanks for the words of sympathy, y'all.
Hind sight makes us wiser, so here's what I have learned -- maybe it's useful for you.
- it is important to back up -- frequently and to multiple devices that are not kept together. In my case, I used unison to sync the important stuff with my laptop, but the laptop was swiped along with the Z. I also backed up to a 2GB flash drive that went with everything else. I know it is stupid to keep everything together, but you may be like me and not always plan to be robbed at any time.
- don't store sensitive info on the Z. I used Zsafe to store *all* my passwords, now I am wonder how safe it really is. I also had bank account info, pdfs of my tax returns and passport, and many other documents. It bothers me that a thief now has access to all that. It's clear to me now that an encrypted file system is critical for portable devices.
As to how it happened, it happened inside a train from Prague from Vienna. Stupid me decided the train would be a good way to go (mistake #1). The Holesovice station in Prague is nasty, right out of a movie. Then I accepted help with the luggage from a porter (big mistake #2). I kept my laptop bag with me at all times until we got on the train. I put it on the seat so that I could help the porter thief with the big luggages (huge mistake #3). The porter worked with a colleague who swiped the bag. I only noticed it was missing when the train was moving out. The best part is that I paid the thief $10!

Aki ... really sorry for what happened to you.
Well here's a few other things I do to minimize loss:
I regularly make backups of my important data (jenerally on rewritable CD or DVD) leaving the backups at home,
I only take bothe laptop and Z with me when I need to (one of the handy things about Z is that, with a little sacrifice, you can do without a laptop when on vacation),
when on vacation I only take with me 2 type of data on external storage (gps maps and games) leaving any important data at home,
I also generally tent not to take my best Z with me (this means that setup is most likely not at it's best ... but in vacation one can play with it and set it up even better then the one you use for work),
I try hard never to have data on my portables that will make me worried if I ever loose the portable (one thing is loosing the latest version of something you were working on, but you have a farely recent backup ... totally different story if you loose something that is a security hazzard),
since when I'm on vacation I try mb best only to take one Z with me it generally fits in a small bag ... I never let go of it unless I'm in a safe plase ... and even when in a safe plase I can allways generally see where the bag is (or where the Z is).
