Bravo!

Pity that i've just sold my C1000. Still waiting for my new C3200 ...
But definitely will try the build for Cxx0 once it's up, as R191 is simply not usable on my C860 ...

Will you be putting up the source too @ http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distri...ons/pdaxrom/src (http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/pdaxrom/src) ?

I've got my build environment all ready and want to try it out.

Thanks,

What are the directions for flashing this?  Are the directions different from flashing beta3?
Do I have to install uboot first?  Where are the instructions for that?
I resized the partition for beta3 - do I have to resize again?
If there's no nand backup,  what DO you DO?  Live without backups?

Thanks.

1: Install uBoot (files on SD, SD in Z, all power out, hold C+D, insert power, wait for LEDs to go off), install pdaX (files on SD, SD in Z, all power out, hold OK, power in, say "y")

2: Yes (see #1)

3: Not that I know of.

4: Yup, we live without backups

Hope that's clear enough.

1: Network- Not OK, lightnpower: OK, input: Not OK

2: About the same as in previous 2.6.x-based pdaXroms

3: In a bad case (X using twice what it usually does), ~10MB free, ~35MB cached, ~18MB used (total (~53MB)-cached)

4: Not tested

5: Works OK, AFAICT (on a C3100)

6: Not tested

Seems pretty good in general. The prompt for a non-root user is nice, but the new user isn't really usable (not in sudoers file, startx broken). Runs MUCH faster than Beta 3. inputconfig.py has to be fixed as in previous betas and the netconfig app is totally broken still.

It looks like Firefox will be in the feed, so that's good.

Stability is fine. No crashes yet (nor do I expect any, within reason). The apps I've tried work fine (Kismet, Fluxbox, Nano, MRXVT, package manager, etc.)

Some stuff wasn't in /etc/fstab, like the SD card and microdrive. The first partition was supposed to be mounted as CF, but it wasn't. Put in my own fstab, SD mounted fine, and the MD mounted OK on reboot.

It does turn on automatically after pulling all power and reinserting it, and the clock does reset back to 1970.

The keyboard still gets a little messed up after leaving X, solved with a script I can call to reload the kernel keymap. , and / are reversed back to normal, which is good.

Thats all for now.

We are updating the Documentation in the pdaXrom page now.
For those who are new to pdaXrom and who want to try out this bleeding edge release, here is a provincial how-to:

Installation of this release consists of two steps:
1. Installing/updating the U-bootloader:
http://www.pdaxrom.org/?q=node/106 (http://www.pdaxrom.org/?q=node/106)

2. Flashing the release image:
http://www.pdaxrom.org/?q=docs/installation/quickguide (http://www.pdaxrom.org/?q=docs/installation/quickguide)

Thanks, Capn_Fish.

One more question,,,maybe this is of interest to others too.  After installing uboot and r198,  if I want to return to my beta3 setup can I just do a nand restore?  Or is it a one way ticket??  :-)

This requires three steps:
1. Do a NAND Flash Erase (in the DM menu);
2. Do a NAND Flash Restore with the original Sharp Rom image (also in the DM menu);
3. Then flash Beta3 as usual (using the "OK mode")

This probably can go to the FAQ in the new Documentation.

I'm waiting on the uboot to build... I had a copy of the akita uboot that I could put out there, but I didnt for corgi

and prior to building corgi... I forgot to do an SVN update.. so that came out tagged as r197... there shouldnt be any difference...

So that is why I didnt announce the corgi build yet because the uboot install files arent out there... but if you already have uboot installed you can go ahead and use it :-)

Post by: ZDevil on April 14, 2007, 06:08:07 pm
Ok, here are some quick fixes:

I. Upgrade from previous Beta4, r121, r1xx ... (assuming U-Boot has already been installed in your Z)
Flashing the new image is now not done in the Sharp Flash ("OK") menu. So you need to do this to install the new release
1) Unzip the new release archive to the root of SD or CF (in my case SD works but not CF); make sure that there are three files - autoboot.sh, kernel.img, rootfs.img
2) Take out AC and the battery. Wait 10 secs.
3) Press the OK button on the keyboard.
4) Put the battery back and plug in AC.
5) Power on the device.
6) It should boot into the Emergency system screen.
7) You'll be asked whether to proceed to install pdaXrom or the emergency system. Press "y" and then [ENTER].
8) Then you will be in a bash prompt (heading with a hash "#"). Switch to the location where the release files are:
Code: [Select]
cd /mnt/card  (or cd /mnt/cf )9) Run the installation script by typing
Code: [Select]
./autoboot.sh .(the last dot "." is necessary)
10) Then you'll be asked once again whether to install pdaXrom or the emergency system. Again, press "y" and then [ENTER]
11) Flashing will then begin. Just let it do its job. It may take minute or two.
12) After flashing is done, the system will reboot automatically.
13) One new thing you'll notice is: upon first booting you have a choice of logging in as a non-root user. Just make your choice. I choose "n", which means to be root, because things get easier.
14) Go through the fixes in II & III.

II. Fix the card mounting issue (thanks to louigi600 for providing this)
You will notice that upon reboot after flashing, both SD and CF are not mounted.
To fix this, edit /etc/fstab. Use your favorite editor to do so.
Open the file, in the lines for /dev/hda1 (for CF) and /dev/mmcblk0p1 (for SD), change
Code: [Select]
noauto,ownerto
Code: [Select]
ownerSave the file, exit the editor.
Then the cards will be mounted automatically.

III. Fix the four application keys (Calendar, Address, Mail, Home)
Edit /etc/X11R6/kb/[Husky/Akita/whatever-your-Z-is-called]/xmodmap
(Note the following applies to C760/860; C1000/3000/3100/3200 have a different keymap)
First look for "keycode 107" (= the Home key), you will see its mapped to "XF86AudioPrev", pressing it will launch xmms, in addition to power on your Z. Strange (and annoying, too  ).
So change it to
Code: [Select]
keycode 107 = XF86LaunchDMoreover, add
Code: [Select]
keycode 67 = XF86LaunchA
keycode 68 = XF86LaunchB
keycode 76 = XF86LaunchC
(XF86LaunchA = Calendar; XF86LaunchB = Address, XF86LaunchC = Mail)
Save the file. (Re)Start X.
The four keys should work now.

The Menu key (XF86Start) doesn't seem to work in Matchbox. In Icewm that can be easily fixed by assigning XF86Start to something (see the "icewm ultimate configuration" thread for example)

That's all for now. This build seems less crazy than the previous ones. Will keep testing it.
Many thanks to all the devs for all the hard work to build. You've come a long way!

Again, please report bugs in the bugtracker (see my signature).

I flashed to r198 but had trouble right off the bat.  Despite having calibrated the stylus on bootup,  the stylus input doesn't "register" on the screen and hitting "enter" or "cancel buttons doesn't work either within the setup utility window...so basically,  there's nothing I can do.  I tried to select "recalibrate stylus" in Input settings but can't get out of that screen.  Then the "exit box" pops up and won't respond to the enter button or the cancel button or the stylus.  This is pretty much a nightmare so far.     Tried the reset button to start over but that did not help.

Minor problem when I booted up....after choosing to create a non-root user when I entered the password I made a mistype on the confirmation of password and it would not allow me to go back and correct it and put in a new password.

Edit:  So I finally went into Input settings and although the stylus was about 10 miles off target,  I managed to select the reset stylus option and hit okay, the exit box came up and I managed to navigate to hit the okay THEN when I exited startx and tried to reenter I found out that my "a" button does not work so I cannot actually get back into the desktop. All I can type is "strtx".  :-)  Is this some kind of joke???

Do you mean the inputsetup window? You can use the Tab key to cycle thru the keys (just look at the dotted frame wrapping around the item).

Also try rm /etc/pointercal and then restart x to calibrate the stylus pointer.

Yes,  that's how I was navigating...by using the arrow keys.  I managed a total reset-reboot and was able to calibrate and now it works.
My Ambicom card is recognized and flashes,  but won't connect to the internet.  I set it up in the network settings.  Is there something special I have to do?

Aren't you glad to have a totally clueless individual try this out.

edit: Network settings keeps resetting the device to "none" as soon as I okay out of it.  I just put the name as ambicom..is something else required?  Looked at ifconfig -a in the console and did not know what to do with the information.

The card LED flashing means the interface doesn't go up (you can tell by ifconfig with only lo up). Since kernel 2.6 beta, you need to rename the network profile name to your card interface name- probably eth0 or wlan0. Also everytime you startup network applet, it shows up none, but correct profile will be used. Mine works with wlan0.

Not at all, to my mind pdaX, just like other linux distros, should be designed for human use but not for its own sake. It is doomed to be a failure if common users can't use it.

This is how I set up my connection to the shared network at home (via router):

#1 Set up a network profile:
Open the "LAN & Wifi" application.
Create a new profile (should be named either eth0 or wlan0), then fill in any necessary information (such as SSID, security key, etc) as what you would do to set up wireless connection on desktops.
Remember to save the profile before quitting the application.

#2 Set up the wifi card
Insert the card.
Normally the LED on the card should flash right after being inserted.
Ideally, the card is automatically detected and is ready to use.
If not, make sure the card is detected by the device, such as by doing the following:
Use commands such as "pccardctl ident (or info or status)",  "lsmod" and "dmesg" (plug the card in first and see the last few lines of the dmesg screen; the error messages are quite comprehensible even without much technical knowledge.)
You don't need to run all of them if you find positive results in any one of these.

The setup process is actually not so intimidating; most common problems, i think, stem from incorrect profiles details or unsupported cards or lack of driver/firmware.
Do correct me if i am wrong. As a mere user, my linux knowledge is also very limited.

Thanks for the help,  ZDevil.  This card worked with pdaxrom beta 3 and pdaxii13 and works with the Sharp Rom on my 3200.
Dillo keeps saying "dns can't solve".  The network settings keeps reverting back to "none" and will not "keep" my ambicom settings (just the default settings...I have no password for the router...we're in the mountains with no one around so it isn't necessary.) The ambicom settings are listed but "none" opens as the default every time.

Do you mean the inputsetup window? You can use the Tab key to cycle thru the keys (just look at the dotted frame wrapping around the item).

Also try rm /etc/pointercal and then restart x to calibrate the stylus pointer.

Did you save the profile (there is a save button in the first tab)?
When you start the "Lan & Wifi", you can choose the profile name by just click on "none" and a saved list will appear.
If you don't use password, pick the right option in the wireless tab.
Can't help much here. I am no expert and I use a different card.

Or, more technically:
In the terminal, what do you see when type in ... ?
ifconfig eth0
and
iwconfig eth0

Yes, I saved the profile. And am able to choose the profile once I open Network settings.
Those commands just give a Device not found message.   Just discovered that my sd card is not recognized and any cf card I insert is not available.
This is an Ambicom WL1100C 2.2 according to the little taskbar utility.

Giving up for now.  If this is an improvement,  I'm glad I didn't try out the earlier versions!
I'm almost ready to flash back to my tremendously modified but great-working beta 3 or better yet my old Cacko ROM.

Yes, memory cards are not mounted automatically when inserted.
See Post #26 for the *simple* fix of the issue.

Now for me after struggling with r197 for one night and one morning, the system seems to be basically usable now:
-- Keymap is now not so insane
(After fixing many files related to keys; the silkscreen keys and screen swivel still not working)
-- Wifi CF is working
(After adding the right firmware)
-- Icewm 1.2.30 runs fine with Rox
(After fighting with matchbox in vain)

The goodies of r197 (compared to Beta3):
-- Speed improvement;
-- Being able to suspend outside X;
-- More modern stuff (kernel 2.6, updated packages and libraries).

So I would let r197 stay on my 860 for now. Next is to set up the native compiling environment. Then I can start compiling with this new system.

Also will keep track of useful info in this thread and the one for r197 for new material to add in the documentation.

ifconfig just has a "lo" listed with some parameters..nothing else.  The other commands just say "No such device." I DID get  my sd card to show up in the taskbar utility by putting a line in fstab but I still cannot get to its content.

So,  basically, I can't use my sd card nor any cf card nor my wifi card.

This is basically working great for everyone else??

Edit:  Found a posting somewhere which said to delete noauto in fstab.  Did that and after a reboot,  my sd and cf cards mounted.  Will that be fixed in a new release? Still am getting nowhere with my Ambicom wifi card...gosh,  it must be THE most common card so it should be automatically supported,  no?

At any rate I installed Rox.  Do I use the same method as I used in beta 3 to get Rox as the default WM.  I think I used the method on this page: Rox as default Window Manager method described (http://www.thesounddesign.com/zaurus/beta3.htm)

What are the last 10 lines of "dmesg" after plugging in the wifi-card ?

What does iwconfig say when the card is plugged in ?

What does ifconfig say ?

Try #pccardctl insert. That should get your card to show up when you type #ifconfig. Or try #ifconfig wlan0 up.

I am using an Ambicom card on r198 to write this now, so I know it works

I couldn't cope...I flashed back to my tweaked beta3 installation.
Couldn't get Rox to work correctly with Matchbox...don't know how to install IceWM and Rox together.  Couldn't get my Ambicom wireless card to work.

I'll wait until some of the problems are solved via a new release.  I get tired of chasing down solutions on the message boards and editing files to get basic stuff to work so I'm not cut out to be a beta tester.

Linux, Firefox, but you're right, it's not working. The file I downloaded is only 1K in size, but I'm not getting the Forbidden message. Evidently, the permissions aren't set correctly.

I too have an Ambicom card. The network scripts are a bit wonky. I found that it's looking for the conf file to be named the same as the interface. So, if your device is wlan0 as mine is, try naming your profile wlan0. Alternately, try
Code: [Select]
mv /etc/sysconfig/netconfig/whatever-profile-was.conf /etc/sysconfig/netconfig/wlan0.conf

Give & you shall receive . Since /root/bin is near the beginning of your PATH (by default, anyway), you can create a 'wrapper' script to override the 'real' one. For example, here's my new /root/bin/startx (assuming you use startx to start your window manager):

Code: [Select]
$ ll /root/bin/startx
-rwx------    1 grog     grog          100 Apr 17 15:08 /root/bin/startx*
$ cat /root/bin/startx
#!/bin/sh
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx > xerrors 2>&1
loadkeys /etc/sysconfig/keyboard/Boxer/keymap.map

Unfortunately, for me it shows that it loads without errors, but does not correct the problem ;(  (at least not in r121, I'll have to try it again when I get a chance to upgrade)

This solved a messed up keymap outside of X. Inside of it it is overridden by the xmodmap file, I believe.

Tried asking this as a new topic - guess no-one spotted it. When (if at all) can we expect a new version of pdaxrom for the C3000?
What is involved in getting one sorted? Is there a process or is it a case of hacking away til it works? I know that the issue is the C3000's lack of Flash but I'm not sure how the problem gets solved (but it is solved for example Meanies pdaxii13)..... so ... can anyone point me in the right direction?

thanks

Maybe somebody already wrote it, but some bugs of r198 (for me):
1) Wrong default vCore (1.5V, instead of 1.4V. After every reboot you must switch to 104/208/312/520/624MHz, and then back to 416 - then vCore becomes 1.4V) (Note: I was using /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpu-voltage )
2) Unusable normal user (by default). To fix you need:
1. Add yourself to wheel group
2. Add to sudoers:
username ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
3. Copy /home/root to /home/username and made chown -R username /home/username
4. chmod -R username /mnt
3) Some AppRun's of settings apps missing "sudo" before starting python-script. For example Input Setup
4) Wrong fstab ( /dev/hda - is microdrive on C3100, not CF!)
5) Some warnings when starting default python-apps (Settings), like:
"gtk.FALSE is deprecheated, use False instead", and Data & Time says: /sbin/sltime: No such file or directory, but works normaly.
Edit:
6) Some keymap bugs in X:
1. fn + d is d, must be `
2. tab = tab + capslock, must be tab (and fn + tab is still capslock)

P.S. Why does Data & Time execs killall openbox, after pressing OK?

Root on SD is possible with u-boot - you can add root=/dev/mmcblk0p1 in default CMDLINE of kernel (before crosscompiling it for Z) and then unpack rootfs to your sd/mmc card (same for microdrive, you just need to know name of device). But I think there is no u-boot for C3000...

While this fixes the arrow keys for me on my Boxer, the screen still doesn't want to clear itself. The cursor stays at the bottom of the screen, with all the text produced by command disappearing. If I try 'clear' or 'reset', the cursor repositions itself at the top of the screen, but this doesn't clear or even overwrite the exisitng text.

Just a note that besides the arrow keys, this is the same for me as it was in r121. and just as there, if I open a video with mplayer, the terminal is working 100% after quiting.

What I did is simply comment out the line in /usr/X11R6/bin/startx:
Code: [Select]
# test -f /etc/sysconfig/keyboard/kernel.map  -a f /usr/bin/loadkeys && sudo /usr/bin/loadkeys /etc/sysconfig/keyboard/kernel.mapAnd there doesn't seem to be any issue so far with the keys outside X.
I remember this is also used in Beta3, because the inputsetup program can mess up the keymap.
Correct me if i am wrong.

I never heard of that one, but it sure does work like a charm. Both neat & confusing

I find that the last line or two on the bottom are still messed up doing this, whereas the suspend/resume clears it up entirely.

i have some problems myself with the new release, as for my both 1GB Hama CF-Cards canceled working.

i reinstalled through uboot two time, but i still cant access the CF-Cards.

One of them i freshly formatted with Fat16.

Is there a command to mount them manually ?

And i would like the commands for formating Memorycardds with ext2 on the Z, for
both the card and the cf please
I had written them down, but i forget where

i just know it was something with "etx2mf..."...

Mounting should be something like
# mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/cf
(on my zaurus it's /dev/hdc1, but I have a C3100)

Formatting :
# umount /mnt/cf
# mkfs.ext2 /dev/hda1
# mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/cf

Good luck,
Chero.

Here's a fix permanent fix for the non-mounting problem.  It's in the first page of this thread from ZDevil:

Code: [Select]
CODE
noauto,owner

to
CODE
owner

Save the file, exit the editor.
Then the cards will be mounted automatically.

I think you need to reboot before this works.

ok, automount seems to be another problem i didnt even noticed

i get the mount working, but the CF-Cards seem to be empty under pdaxrom, what they are not. Maybe a driver problem or such *sigh*

For now, i go back to beta3, i need a working system today

Thx anyway

I am really hoping to get some networking going so I can help with debugging r198 on the C3100.

Unfortunately, it looks like the drivers are not working for my wifi card.
In dmesg, I get:
spectrum_cs: Cannot find firmware: symbol_sp24t_prim_fw
It's a socket revK low power wifi card which works well in beta3

So, I gave my ppp over bluetooth connection a shot.
Looks like the driver loads and the bluetooth card gets attached properly:
1.0: ttyS0 at I/O 0xc48403f8 (irq = 137) is a 16C950/954

but when I try using the ppp preferences, the search button doesn't work, it says "Can't get DUN info".  I have tried changing the setting from rfcomm0 to ttyS0 and my phone is definately discoverable.
Is there a way to set up the bluetooth pairing manually or am I doing something else wrong?

I feel like I may have jumped in a bit too deep but I am hoping that if I can get at least one of these going I can give it a go... I'd really appreciate a little help!

Just not to be too negative though:
- it's definately faster (even without icewm so far!)
- seems stable and robust
- supports screen reorientation
- suspend is OK and faster than beta 3, even with xmms playing (with ALSA)

Thanks, Capn_Fish.

One more question,,,maybe this is of interest to others too.  After installing uboot and r198,  if I want to return to my beta3 setup can I just do a nand restore?  Or is it a one way ticket??  :-)

[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158845\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

This requires three steps:
1. Do a NAND Flash Erase (in the DM menu);
2. Do a NAND Flash Restore with the original Sharp Rom image (also in the DM menu);
3. Then flash Beta3 as usual (using the "OK mode")

This probably can go to the FAQ in the new Documentation.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=158847\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Sorry if this is a stupid question. But I am trying to go back to beta3. I can get into the DM menu fine. I did a nand flash erase no problem. But I don't have the original sharp rom. Would the Cacko rom do? or if someone can point me to the rom that would be great.

I am having a problem getting bluetooth ppp going in r198.
It is a socket card and dmesg returns the following:

1.0: ttyS0 at I/O 0xc48403f8 (irq = 137) is a 16C950/954

but when I try to attach the card, I get

# hciattach -p ttyS0 bcsp 921600 flow
BSCP initialization timed out

any ideas what to try next? The card worked OK in beta3.
