Title: Petition To Sharp Corporation
Post by: Antikx on April 16, 2007, 12:38:00 pm
I've set up a petition page to Sharp Corporation: http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/?q=petitiontosharp (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/?q=petitiontosharp)

Petitions are cheesy and a waist of time.
Ya, they might be a little cheesy and have been over done.
It will only take about 1 minute of your time, so if it is a waste you're not out by much.

Why should Sharp care what us folks in the western world think?
I'm a firm believer in speaking up even if you are a minority.
The existence of this community is a voice in some sense, but perhaps a petition page is a way of being more direct.

If the Zaurus is only sold in Japan, why have an English petition page?
If people can translate the quote into Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, etc I will be happy to add those languages to the page.
Here is the quote people can translate:
Quote
We, the Zaurus community, request that Sharp Corporation continue to develop and produce the Linux-based, Zaurus "Personal Mobile Tool" devices.
We appreciate the work that has gone into the design and implementation of the hardware. We enjoy the freedom that running the Linux operating system gives us.

The Zaurus hasn't been officially discontinued!
True, and good point.
But personally I would rather try to influence them to not cancel the Zaurus then try to influence them to un-cancel it.

I don't want to create an account on tyrannozaurus.
And as I mention on the page:
Quote
If an individual wishes to be added to this petition but does not wish to sign up for an account on this website, please email tyrannozaurus at gmail dot com and I will paste your email (minus your email address) into a comment.

"paste your email (minus your email address) into a comment."

Is that supposed to be a trick line?

ok ok, I know what you mean ... pasting the email as in the mail itself ...

Unfortunately, Sharp has given up the Z for dead. Or at least Dead-Z-Walking.

The original head of Z development (has since moved on to the W-Zero 3) was a very open individual - an Engineer I used to work with at a research institute where we met the VP of R&D responsible for the Z - (I've lost his card now so I can't remember his name  ) had a long talk with said VP last November (? Or so... I made a couple of posts about it.) They went over a lot of what "could have been" and we found out some interesting details on why Sharp and the Z failed so badly here.

He ended up pointing us to the current head of the Z project. All we got out of *him* was a curt reply from a secretary saying "We're not interested in any further development of the platform - go away."

Not encouraging.

And I won't be able to extract any contact info out of the Engineer. He's quite anal about that sort of thing - wouldn't even let me keep a copy of the proposal he sent to the original VP, even after I edited it for him
