Title: I Lost My Z...
Post by: cal on April 23, 2007, 10:29:04 am
I lost my Z yesterday...  I misplace things regularly, so I didn't think too much of it until I noticed an extra device on my network.  I looked into it and sure enough its my Zaurus.  I must have it plugged in somewhere or the battery would be dead.  Its responding to pings... Hmm, yeah I just tested ssh, and I can log in.   I can't figure out were it is in my house, and my house is not that big.

Err...

If you can log in through ssh then install buzzme if you don't already have it (search the forums to find it) and put it to buzz until you find it.

Let us know how you get on :-)

Oh man cal.  You gave me a chuckle.

Seriously, I agree with the others you need to make your Zaurus scream.

Cresho, You're an awesome dude.

I called my wife and had her check behind the desk, and there it was.  Apparently, it got stuck against the wall half way down so I couldn't see it on the floor.  I bet my IT guy will get a kick out off this story.

Now if only I could find my Mac Mini...

Glad to hear you found it. I'd totally flip out if I couldn't find my Z.

I once lost a mobile phone... Ericsson SH888, at the time it was one of the best. I tried ringing it, no luck, noone answered and after a day knew the battery would have cut out. I'd retraced my steps for the day I last saw it, and eventually gave it up for lost and claimed on the insurance.

Literall, a year later I'd resigned that job, was saying goodbye to everyone, hanging round reception, and saw a mobile phone on the shelf. I was curious, it seemed familiar, asked to see it, and it was my old phone. Told the insurance company it'd turned up, they said keep it. The battery had of course long ago died. Snag was I'd sold or given away my accessories.

It was very weird, something turning up so long after I'd given it up.

Since we are sharing lost Z stories, here's mine.  I carry my Z in a leather case with all of my accessories and it is seldom is out of my sight.  About 6 months ago, I get up to go to work and can't find my Z.  Oh, must have left it in the car.  Once in the car and no Z, I figure, must have left it at work.  As you might guess, not at work either.

After looking for it everywhere and calling every place I had been in the last day or so, I finally give up on the search.  I begin the agony of deciding whether to replace it with another Z or move to a different platform.  I go to wash my SUV about 2 weeks later and as I am spraying the top of the vehicle I spy a leather case wedged in the roof luggage rack.  I guess I drove off with the case on top of the vehicle and fortunately it slid down the length of the roof and wedged in the rack and stayed there for 2 weeks.

Case was dirty but no damage to the Z or accessories.  I'm a happy man again.  Funny how much you can miss a block of plastic and glass.

This reminds me of my story.
My first C3000, a donation from a former HP 200LX user and member of this forum now..
I took it in a leather case withme when visiting a friend.
All was a bit hectic, we were late, and when arriving with the car, I jumped out, opeed the back door to unlock my 3yo doughter; my wife also a bit hectical, and then we go to the house of our friend.

Arrived there, talked for an hour and played with the children.

Then, after an hour, we begin showing our latest progress with Zaurus (she - our friend - also has one). I want to pull it out of the case, but - the case is not there. Asked my wife if she has it - no. Asked our friend if she took it - no.
Finally asked our doughter if she has seen it - yes, er, no.

Then I tried to remember where I had it at last. In the car. In my hand when unlocking the child. No, actually not. I must have put it on top of the car while unlocking. And I didn't remember to have picked it up from there.

So I jumped out and quickly went to the car and of course the case with the Zaurus was gone.

I searched for some time in the surrounding of the car, but of course nothing.
In the evening I went to the police office and told them about the loss. They considered it a theft because I knew where I had left it before it was gone.  They registered the serial number etc. But nothing.
My C3000 was gone.
Fortunately I had bought a backup unit a few weeks before.
Fortunately all my sensitive data was encrypted AND stored on an ext2 SD card. So the noob thief would not see ANY data when putting the card into a Windows computer.

Unfortunately, the last backup was over a week old! Not the loss of the unit, but the loss of that week of work caused me most of the trouble.

So people, take care about your Zauri, and make frequent backups! Not only in case of a drive failure, but also in case of loss this may come in handy.

i was making photocopies at the first floor on a local college campus.  I walked upstairs and attended a classroom.  Three hours later, a female approached me and handed me the unit (and i was trying to figure out how the heck she knew it was mine?!)  Anyway, I told her my life was in the unit and I recently deleted my hardrive backup on my pc.  I offered 150 dollars for her troubles and to top it off, i had close to 600-800 dollars in the wallet (was heading towards the bookstore to buy a few things).  Anyway, I ended with a final thought....."man, what a great wife she would be!"  so honest and all and what pissed me off, she didn't want a 20 for lunch on me!
