Title: Still Any Mac&zaurus Users/developers There?
Post by: dhns on May 12, 2007, 05:17:35 am
Hi,

it is two months since the last post in this forum so I wonder if there is still any Zaurus user out there who works with a Mac? Or Mac user who works with a Zaurus?

Or is your Zaurus collecting dust while you are waiting for the iPhone (to be opened to 3rd party applications)?

-- hns

Note on ZMacSync: we have moved further development to idle mode since it looked no more reasonable given the recently low interest and the (wrong?) announcement that the Zaurus goes out of production.

I admit, most of the time my Zaurus is not doing much. But basically this is because I have not found a good/reliabke way to sync (I would not care if it is complicated or would involve e.g. the commandline). A pitty ZmacSync is being dropped. But probably it is a chicken and egg problem.

While I was using a Linux laptop I synced almost daily and I used my Zaurus a lot more. A pitty

Mac and Z user here.  I haven't bothered to post here because I'm currently running pdaXii13 and pdaXrom on both of my Z which are not friendly with most of the mac goodies out there like ZMacSync.

Mac and Zaurus and Linux user here!
I sync things through my web server mostly, trying to get everything working on standard tools like iCal, LDAP, IMAP etc...

Samba with wifi is how I connect to my zaurus and I can ssh in and even run remote X applications with pdaXrom, lovely to use zaurus apps on a large screen but still have the data on the zaurus.

An iPhone is not a Zaurus. It does not run a spreadsheet, nor does it have a keyboard, etc. I certainly will not be buying one.

If Apple were to make a pocket-sized Mac - then I would buy onw tomorrow. But I do not need a phone.

And I am most disappointed that ZMacSync never got completed.

Well, it depends on the price and specs.

I will rather wait for all dusts settled, like the case of iPod.

I use a Mac and a Zaurus, but still maintain an interest in the newton and palm platforms, which are still much superior for Pim type activities. I was disappointed that no-one yet addressed handwriting or how to get data in without using a keyboard (else it is just a tiny laptop).

However, the Zaurus is amazing for its size as it runs a full web server (if a bit slow) so it is great on a network. Also nice for showing photos, and useful for me to learn linux but I must say that I have given up on these small devices really delivering something useful out of the box.

I agree that a UMPC mac system with additional input using rosetta via touch sensitive screen would be the best device, but it might be a long time coming, if ever.

mac and zaurus user.
I never use calendar on my mac, only on my Z, so no real need to sync...
However I have greatly appreciated the development of usb network driver.

Thank you very much!

Your comment and the others (which is far more than I had expected) gives some reasons to think about continuing the work on ZMacSync or something similar.

Continuing ZMacSync as it is depends largely on whether Sharp will continue to produce the Zaurus. Working for a limited number of users without growth is usually not quite rewarding, especially if complexity for the final feature grows beyond any reasonable limits.

And will the iPhone be open? If not, maybe, scrapping any future ZMacSync-2.x releases and refocussing on something new, called "ZMacSync 3.0" which would work directly with QuantumSTEP on a Zaurus may fulfill the promises and expectations much better.

It would make development much simpler if both devices have a compatible calendar (CalendarStore.framework) and address book database (AddressBook.framework) and if both devices provide SyncServices.framework.

So, sort of Feature list (well, I am just thinking not promising anything) of ZMacSync-3.0:
* makes the Zaurus a "MacPDA" by using GNUstep/QuantumSTEP
* the ZMacSync application runs on both: Mac and Zaurus (even multiple machines)
* allows to sync everything between a "Master" and potentially several "Slave" devices
* uses ZeroConf to find each other

Just thinking loudly...

Slightly off topic, but...

I have a C860 which I am thinking of replacing by a C3200. Is there any easy way of getting all my contact / calendar / etc information of the C860, and onto the C3200, perhaps via my Mac, using ZMacSync?

Or any other sensible way?

You can either copy the PIM database files - they are compatible.

Or use a rarely known feature of ZMacSync: Use the "Save As..." command to store a copy of all PIM entries on the C860 in an XML file on your Mac. Then, switch to the C3200 and do a "Load..." from the XML file saved on the Mac.

Yes, I guessed that, thanks - but can you give me a complete list of files which I need to transfer?

To reply to the initial question, I have a SL5500. My original thought was to get an iPhone once my Collie dies (which won't be long with the way I use it). However, after giving more though to it, I am more likely to replace it with a clamshell model, which would still be cheaper than an iPhone (or the impending touch screen iPod for that matter). Also, there is something about the flexibility of adding and subtracting, and changing OSes that cannot be done on an iPhone or any of these types of devices.

iPhone:

- too big for a phone
- too crap for a pda
- too expensive for me

Mac and Z user chiming in. I'm using my Tosa (Sl-6000) for a few odds 'n' ends these days, but I'm so bored by the lack of anything happening in the Z world. This is the first time I've checked these forums in months. ROM development for the Tosa has all but stopped (Angstrom seems to be interesting, though), and the things I enjoy about using OS X are but a distant dream on the Z. I like tinkering, but sometimes I really just want things to be simple.

I've thought about selling the Tosa. I've thought about getting an iPhone. And I guess what I'd really like is a Zaurus that runs OS X. I suspect I'll use my Z as long as it continues to serve my basic portable needs, and then finally get an Apple PDA if it ever appears.

One more point of view:

Mac user and Zaurus (pdaXrom / weeXpc) user and developer here.
I regularly connect both devices via network (WLAN) and sync files using Chronosync on the Mac. This works just great.

However, I do not (yet) use the calendar or address book on the Mac, because I use those on the Zaurus (KO/PI and KA/PI under pdaXrom, not DTM) and am quite happy with them.

However, Once in a while I have the need to heavily edit the databases of both programs, which is cumbersome on the Zaurus due to its slower speed and smaller screen.
Also, sometimes when I'm working on the Mac I would like to just have access to the calendar or address book without looking for the Zaurus, switching it on and starting the PIMs.

So, I would very much like to sync KA/PI and KO/PI with the Mac in addition to the directories I sync now.

I would not necessarily need to sync with the Mac's built-in programs, if KO/PI and KA/PI would be available as Mac versions. I would then rather sync Kx/PI for Mac with Kx/PI on zaurus, which would probably work flawlessly.

Of course, it's possible to run KO/PI and KA/PI Windows versions on a Windows installation under Parallels under Mac OS, but that's again too cumbersome for my taste.

So these main questoins remain:

Did anyone attempt to compile KDEPIM/PI 2.2.7 on the Mac already?

Are there reliable solutions for syncing KDEPIM/PI with the Mac's calendar and address book?

I've just joined the ranks of a Mac user, so I use Mac at work, Linux and windows at home, have a Zaurus 6000, 3100 and a palm T3.

I came looking for the cdc driver, seeing as how when I plugged 3100 (running Angstrom) it reported

Mac and Zaurus 5500 user here.

I have not had a need for my Zaurus for awhile now but I still fire it up when I am running a backup. I used to use it for email and surfing at work and traveled with a modem. The iPhone will do what I used to need it for. I am hoping a 12" Macbook Pro will surface.

Mac user here too, I develop applications for OS X, I only have Image Resize application under my belt right now.  I don't really sync my Z with the computer, I do transfer files though.  It's good to see other mac users out there.
