Hi all,
Have been reading this forum heavily since I have got my Zaurus a month or so ago and finally figured out how to get validated today (thanks again admin for the fast response!) so heres my first post
So university is almost finished, and I'm looking forward to getting properly into using the Z now my work/revision will be done. Anyways I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the ROMs available; I have read lots of posts on this forum and gone to the ROM sites but still don't know which ROM to install and what will suit me best.
I would really appreciate if anyone could give me a quick rundown or summary of what each ROM is in a nutshell, what it is good/bad for, and ideally peoples experiences with them as well?
To put my needs into context I am starting a web development company with my friend after university so reliability is important, as is the ability to sync data between machines and ideally use a fully fledged browser like firefox if possible. I'm not very linux savvy but I have been using Fedora a bit in university, and have ubuntu feisty fawn as my primary OS now but I'm still right at the beginning of my linux adventure. The linux side of the Zaurus was partly why I bought it though so I am willing to learn!
Sorry for the length of the post but I really would appreciate any and all suggestions for how I can make the most out of my Zaurus with a new ROM. The default is OK but I don't like the contact manager issues with English alphabet, as well as the missing text in some menus/configuration that should be in Japanese it gets very confusing. Also just excited about trying something new!
Thanks in advance to any and all who contribute.
Richard.

Hi!
Since you are use to using fedora and ubuntu, I recommend Meanie's pdaxii3(not sure if i spelled it right). please make a sig for people to better help you. it is still in development and not too stable for a newcomer but the solutions to the various problems are in the forums.

Hi there thanks for the reply. I hadn't heard of that one before, do you have a link for it? at all? Is it similiar to pdaXrom?

Pdaxii3rom is a stable version of pdaxrom - which has had a lot of effort to make it very functional and stable. It is X based and feels alot like a desktop system on the Z - which is great if that is what you want (and I do love it:-))
See here for the details:

Have fun

I've had a look around and found some information about pdaxii3, it does look very good indeed! I'm a bit scared about the installation but I guess you just have to take the plunge
Do you know if its compatibile with my wireless card by chance? I'l have a search around for info now but if anyone knows off-hand that would be great.

Hi sorry I made my last reply while you were doing yours I think. It is exactly what I was looking for really (desktop X system rather than so PDA like), will definitely install it I think.
How did you find the installation? Any problems? Also do you rememeber which guide you followed to install it and if so could you show me the link please? Thanks for the reply!

Your wireless card is supported out of box. Just plug it in, configure a scheme, and you're golden.

I'm running pdaXii13 on my 3200 it is exactly what you are looking for. To install it with all the goodies. Install pdaXii13 Akita first from here (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/akita/). That will give you the stable 2.4.20 kernel for the 3200 that is similar to the old pdaXrom Beta 3. After that you need to upgrade it to pdaXii13 full by downloading the hdimage-full.tgz from here (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/tmp/). I recommend using the unstable hdimage because it is more feature complete than the stable one and is actually quite stable. Meanie's alphas are more stable than most peoples betas.
pdaXii13 was what I was expecting my Zaurus to be like when I first bought it. A powerful open source micro-notebook that supports all of the Zaurus features in a user friendly manner.

here's my "devil's dictionary" guide to ROM distros
Sharp ROM - for those who are too scared to flash
Cacko - for those too scared to flash more than once
pdaXrom - for people who love flashing as often as possible
OZ - for people who love flashing, don't like documentation, don't mind being beta testers, and don't want a web browser
Angstrom - for people who love flashing, don't want ANY documentation, love being alpha testers, and don't need any particular software at all

Sounds like it is just what I'm looking for indeed! Is there anything I should do before I flash that isn't mentioned in the guide? (like backing up old SharpROM maybe?), Just want to be sure I don't make a £400 paperweight
Also, that guide where you linked me to isn't very noob friendly do you know if there is a more comprehensive one around?
-
yes, pdaxrom is indeed enjoyable. though a word of caution is necessary IMHO...although pdaxii3 is very stable, it is also quite slow. dont expect it to be nearly as responsive as a desktop system. and i mean an old p3 desktop system or even older. i'm quite dissapointed with its speed. especially when it comes to apps like abiword and firefox. pdaxrom r198 is supposed to be much faster. now, im not going to confirm or negate that. i tried r198 on my c1000 and abiword was much slower on r198 than on pdaxii3. not to mention a lavish flashing experience...
now i ask you fellow senior and new Z users... is it feasible to expect significant performance increases with the introduction of EABI and stable kernel 2.6 based distros?

Use these instructions (Reset and Service Menues section only) to backup your current SharpROM setup using the Backup Restore Menu on page 3 in the Diagnostic Menu.
[a href=\"http://www.thesounddesign.com/zaurus/beta3.htm]http://www.thesounddesign.com/zaurus/beta3.htm
I recommend placing a blank 256MB to 512MB CF card formatted to FAT16 (no EXT2 or FAT32 formatted cards allowed) in the CF slot since the diag menu has compatibility issues with some SD cards.
Follow these instructions (it says it is for Beta1 but, they are are still applicable) to install pdaXii13 Akita.
https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Installing_pdaXrom (https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Installing_pdaXrom)
However you must use the files from here
http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/akita/ (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/akita/)
to get pdaXii13.
After that replace intrd.bin from the Akita page our install CF/CD card with hdimage-full.tgz from here
http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/tmp/ (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/feed/pdaXii13/tmp/)
Go into the Flash Upgrade menu like you did to install pdaXii13 akita. Start the upgrade and choose to partition your MicroDrive (select default), reboot and go back into the Flash Upgrade menu start the upgrade again and choose write HDimage to MicroDrive. After it is done rebott and enjoy your pdaXii13 full.

I hear this all the time about how much slower 2.4 kernel is compared to the 2.6 kernel but, I find the speed gains minimal for what I do. I'm running R198 on my 1000 and pdaXii13 akita full on my 3200. Firefox, AbiWord and Gimp are slow on both ROMs. ScummVM runs like a dream on pdaXii13 but, doesn't work properly under R198 thanks to some audio issues. Videos run smoothly under pdaXii13 but, I hear that is not the case with the 2.6 kernels. Got to test that one.
The 2.6 kernel based ROMs have a ways to go before they have the usability of the 2.4 kernel based ROMs. I also have a feeling that alot of the speed increases that everyone keeps talking about with 2.6 kernels will be lost once the ROMs become more feature complete on the Z.

Great post.
Hey thanks for that post very useful/informative. Unfortunately though I just ordered an SD card and reader not CF, but I checked the compatibility list here:
http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/?q=wiki/SDCompatList (http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/?q=wiki/SDCompatList)
And am actually getting the one you commented on
SanDisk | 2GB | Standard Speed | C1000-C3200/Sharp-Cacko/Tetsu/pdaXii13 | Yes (HoloVector)
http://memory4mobiles.co.uk/memory/sandisk...048pluse10/4722 (http://memory4mobiles.co.uk/memory/sandisk-2gb-sd-card-with-readerandwriter_sdsdbrplus2048pluse10/4722)
Is this going to be OK or have I just wasted £20?
Thanks again for that post mate is very much appreciated, but please don't be shocked if you see an urgent help thread over the next few days though hehe .

I'm not sure I have used that one for NAND backup and flashing. That one mainly sees use as a very large capacity floppy disk on my 3200.

Hmm how can I tell if it works? As in will it simply not work or could it actually cause major problems at some point along the way if its not compatible but will give the 'illusion' of working?

The one time I used a problem card it let me backup the NAND but would not let me restore it until I copied the backup file to a different card.

I've never had a problem with SD cards and nand backup/restore... those who have, have usually solved the problem by freshly reformatting them.
It's pretty definitive whether it works or not, however, when I did get my 3100 I did a nand backup to SD then copied the file to my PC to make absolutely sure it wasn't corrupt, and I think I did another backup and then compared the files.

OK thanks I'l be sure to check and double check that the download isn't corrupt. I saw there was a checksum.txt file on the pdaX3ii site do I just need to use that or is there other things I should be doing to?
Sorry about the endless stream of questions I just want to be very sure before I do this for the first time

Yes, make use of the checksum.txt.
Please note that before Meanie provided these checksums I flashed my 3200 with an incomplete initrd.bin and another time I flashed my 3200 with an incomplete hdimage.tgz. In neither of these cases did it ruin my Z.
The clamshell Zaurii are quite resilient to screwups and nearly unbrickable. Heck, Sharp even burned a backup copy of the Diagnostic Menu on the ROM so, you can recover from some very nasty screwups.

I don't agree with this, I think actually for the usage mentioned here Angstrom is much better.
If you're ready to tinker with Pdaxrom and have used Linux, then Angstrom requires much less tinkering than Pdaxrom, gives you a 2.6 kernel, native 4.2 GCC, and total stability, compared with Pdaxrom's not so stable environment. There's tons of packages and native compilation works, just like in debian.
I've used both, and would not got back to Pdaxrom, no matter what. Though Angstrom is in the dev phase still, it's much better, and it's faster than Pdaxrom, or at least that's my subjective feel based on usage experience.

oh dear, sorry, but I think you took my comments as being serious! I am currently running OZ, having tried Angstrom (but the key packages I wanted to use simply segfaulted) and will probably go back to Angstrom once these issues are sorted.
-
Yeah, guess I didn't realize that was humor
Anyhow, I'm surprised to see you using OZ over Angstrom, as the only thing that segfaults for me is Firefox and Minimo, and these bothe in OZ and Angstrom, so have seen no diff in this. Rather actually many packages work in Angstrom that didn't for me in OZ...
This being due to the fact that with a 2.6 kernel I've been able to compile anything that was missing. The only irritating bit is the firefox...

only because I am retracing previous work to get TomTomGO software to run, which I know definitively is possible on OZ, whereas its untried on A.. once I have it working I will try it on A.

Dunno I've got of got my heart set on pdaxii3 now after have read so much into it, and I know it has everything I want.
Sadly though I'm stuck on the first hurdle.. the first link HoloVector gave me says D + M + Power to get to english menu but that doesn't work for me I can only seem to get to the Japanese one by holding OK while I boot. Can I get to the English menu or haven't I got the right version for it? If not how do I backup my original SharpROM please? Confused already
-
1. Disconnect the power cable.
2. Take out the battery.
3. Press and keep holding D and M.
4. While still holding them insert battery (this takes some juggling :0) )
5. While still holding lock the battery in place with the battery switch
6. While still holding wait 4-5 seconds
7. The English menu will pop up

Thanks. I had just googled and found a similar procedure on Conics, the link didn't really explain it to well at first it must have been because I had it plugged in.
edit: removed Q as I am now officially onto the next step
Thanks again mate.

And thanks for all your help so far everyone has been great. Awesome community you have here!

I think the only time you need to be careful about existing the D+M menu or OK menus is when doing a nand backup, to make sure the Z has finished writing to the card... i.e when it indicates its finished to wait, say, another 30 seconds just to be safe.

This is getting interesting.
I've only used Cacko and the Sharprom which I find run at reasonnable speed, not instantaneous but almost.
So when you talk about slowness, what is it? Is it tapping on firefox and wait for what 2,5,10,30 sec?
-
BSD: the only one which runs Firefox 2
-
OK Here's a stupid question
I have a 3200 and I'm doing the install.
One users post said to replace initrd.bin with hdimage-full.tgz for the second part of the install (the microdrive bit)
Holovector said: "After that replace intrd.bin from the Akita page our install CF/CD card with hdimage-full.tgz from here"
Does that mean rename hdimage-full.tgz or simply remove initrd.bin from the CF card and put hdimage-full.tgz on there?
Sorry to seem like an Idiot but I'd really like to get this right the FIRST time...
-
OK that was a stupid question - I just copied the file on the card and it all seems to have worked fine.
-
no feedback about the speed?
-
But one thing i CANNOT find is - how do you re-calibrate the touch screen - it's not quite right and driving me crazy!!
Also one more thing - I used to simply connect it via USB to my PC and all the networking stuff just worked. I have run meanines script usbnet but my computer keeps saying "limited or no connectivity" on the network adapter (running Windows XP) and coming up with an IP address vastly different to the one configured on the Zaurus - obviously zaurus is also not browseable.
I have had a play around with Samba config, etc and I can't seem to make this work - does anyone have any suggestions?
Speed is definately slower than the Sharp environment but this shouldn't exactly be a shock given what we're trying to do!
-
One more One more thing is that quite a few apps aren't running
eg: SMplayer (tries to start but then returns to desktop)
Have I done something wrong on install?
I did use updater.sh 0.2 as my installer for both NAND and HDD
Should I have upgraded to 0.3 for the HDD part?
Anyway I'll keep playing around...

I May go back to Sharp (I am a little ashamed of my lameness) it's a neat environment but it's just a little slow and fiddly for my needs right now.
But at least I know I can load it pretty easily.

there's no shame in going back to Sharp, but many people stick with Cacko as a sort of Sharp++.

I can never find a version of Cacko to download for the 3200.
I haven't looked for a while but last time I checked there wasn't one
Has this changed?
Where can I find it?

I can never find a version of Cacko to download for the 3200.
I haven't looked for a while but last time I checked there wasn't one
Has this changed?

The hosted files from this site will be fixed soon so the old links on www.cacko.biz will work again.
If you are in hurry and don't want to wait you can find the 3200 version [a href=\"http://www.tyrannozaurus.com/?q=cacko]here.

I also hear OpenBSD is very nice on the C3x00. It would (probably) give a pdaX-ish environment and should be dead simple to configure/set up (it is a mature desktop OS).
I haven't actually tried it, but just ask ZDevil.

1. Disconnect the power cable.
2. Take out the battery.
3. Press and keep holding D and M.
4. While still holding them insert battery (this takes some juggling :0) )
5. While still holding lock the battery in place with the battery switch
6. While still holding wait 4-5 seconds
7. The English menu will pop up
This is a few months late, but maybe it will help someone.
Being fairly clumsy, I was glad to find this simplified procedure:
1. Disconnect the power cable.
2. Take out the battery. (I replace the battery cover loosely for stability of the case.)
3. Press and hold Fn, D, and M
4. Insert the power cable.
5. The English menu will pop up. (Release the keys.)
