Title: Minimo web browser reported running on Zaurus
Post by: zenyatta on March 11, 2004, 05:47:29 am
If you are unaware, as I was until today, of the existence of the Minimo project (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/), it is an embeddable web browser based on Mozilla\'s Gekko engine.

An interview (http://www.nmcx.com/story.php?news_id=3761) has just come out with two of its developers and they mention that they ran the software on a Zaurus in 32MB of memory. That would suggest a 5x00 machine but they apparently use Familiar Linux rather than any of the usual ROMs (the browser needs GTK).

Reader comments section includes a brief discussion of porting the code to PalmOS with one person noting that it is doable but a lot of work. The same would hold for Qtopia/OPIE, presumably...

Actually, scratch that... they ran Opera on the Zaurus, not Minimo... my reading seems to be a bit too eager

Still, the point of my post was to alert people to this potentially relevant project. And maybe they do test the thing on the Zaurus, it\'s just not exactly written in the article...

I tried it but couldn\'t get it to work (it was the first ever build) then I moved away from GPE and haven\'t had the chance since.

Wow... I actually looked at the screenshots for this... (under Windows Pocket PC)...
It is actually starting to have some more added features... Browser Tabs, Preferences menu, Fullscreen...

BUT... is will still be a backup browser for me once it gets ported to Zaurus... and I can finally get rid of Dillo :-)

and is it in the OZ/GPE feeds? I'm looking to move away from dillo, and firefox's icons are too big for the 5500 screen. Are there other browsers that work?
