Title: Bluetooth Cf Recommendations?
Post by: adf on June 08, 2007, 07:35:27 pm
I guess I should by a BT CF for my Z.
Since some of you have messed with this already I'd appreciate a recommendation or two.
Obviously what is wanted is an incredibly cheap device that is BT 2 compliant, uses nearly no power, and doesn't stick out of the Z--and that works (on pdaX mostly) without trouble.
What seems to be mentioned in the forums is billionton.
What do you recommend?

I hear that Socket cards are nice, as they don't stick out at all.

The Belkin F8T020 works with pdaXrom, but it needs some tweaking. Works out of the box with Cacko, though.

The socket cards aren't BT2.0, sadly. And they're no good for headsets either. But it's still awesome for the formfactor - one is always in my Z

I have a dongle already that will work with a powered hub--and dongles can be had for very little on ebay last I checked.  I can use dongles (and attach ones my Z doesn't like to stuff around the house) when the Z is parked on a desk and I want to use bt headphones.

What I'm after with the cf bt is simlpy a good connection to my phone (which definitley is NOT bt 2 either, since it was kinda hot 3 years ago)

Thanks for the replies.

actually i gave the a2dp high quality bluetooth stuff a go the other day on my PC and it worked well, bit of latency but i would consider it in a working condition

quality wasent the best but i didnt tweak it like i did for Windows mobile, same options (bit pool) to do so were avalible

best bit is that it had the remote profile built into the daemon, took me 3 minutes to get the remote controlling mpd. other handy stuff is built in like auto connect and adding deleting headsets without killing the deamon and the ability to run it as a non root user without suid (it works!!!)

anyone have info on the ambicom (BT2000D-CF)?

Or the Sitecom? (these things are all over ebay right now)

My current agenda is leaning heavily toward cheap, readily available, and relatively simply to get working.

I think I've heard that the Ambicom works welleasily, but I'm not 100% sure.

Not trying to derail the thread, but what exactly do folks use BT with on the Zaurus?  I've been wanting to try it, but don't have any application whatsoever.

I'm planning to do DUN via bluetooth through my gsm phone. It is slow, but really mobile.
I tested the setup with a BT dongle on my ubuntu desktop--learned how to make the connections, etc. Decided that CF would probably suit my purposes on the Z better than would a dongle (I'f I'm using a dongle, then I have a powered hub connected).
So, my idea with this thread is to try to solicit info so that I can pick up a good cf bt card with the reasonable expectation that it will do the job.

I got a bluetooth card to use a bluetooth mouse (which isn't really that great), and haven't used it since.

I suppose you could use it with a cell phone to get anywhere internet access, but I haven't tried

I use bluetooth to connect to my phone for internet access.  Works great and it is fast.  I just ordered a cf bluetooth card which will look better than having a dongle hanging out the back as I do now.  But if you are short on cash a dongle is a good way to go because it is very cheap and low powered so it doesn't require a powered hub.

Probably most people will use it for tethering to a phone.  I have read posts on here in the past that talk about a file manager that has the option to send via bluetooth but it is comercial software and probably not available any more.

I dunno-- CF BT seems to run about 40-90 usd (you can find 'em for more if you want, of course) and USB BT runs 10 to about ...25 usd? The problem with the least expensive dongles is that they tend to be be from  small scale entrepreneurs in asia who are mostly aiming at a windows market--they build something very inexpensively and make sure it works in windows--on a Z that can be a problem.
In fact, I started this thread to address that very thing, only in terms of BT CF. I figured I'd ask around for which cards (and chips?) seem to work without fuss and deliver good performance before I went and ordered one.

That is part of the problem, of course. Being in Alaska I have really limited options for buying stuff even as specialized as a BT cf card. We have the a few of the chains-like officemax, best buy and compusa (and walmart, etc..) some computer stores mostly devoted to more mainstream pursuits as games, business or multimedia..camera shops, etc. I tend to have to buy online, and given the distances involved a mistaken purchase can take well over a month of mailing (1-3 weeks each way, usually--not to mention handling) to sort out. For something I'm anxious to use getting it right the first time is fairly important.

Interestingly, no one has yet mentioned a Bluetooth cf card that works outta the box in pdaxii13 (or beta 3).
The sitecom 501 card is being sold "for the zaurus3200" on ebay by for about 45 usd.  Only 1 post on oesf from a year ago asking if it worked..no reply. Any one have an idea?

edit: lmao--just found this: https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Bluetooth_Card_Support (https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Bluetooth_Card_Support)  a nice list of just what I was looking for.

luck yfor us the bluetooth sig people defined an common interface, thier are varients and silght diffrences but what it means is that nearly all cards work "out of the box" of course YMMV

the other thing that helps is that they all seem to licsence the same IP for the bluetooth internals, nearly everything i have got has been a cambridge CSR chip

im in the same boat as you with regards to hardware, there is poor choice and its bottom end stuff (Australia). to me it seems that you can get anything from bottom end to high-midrange from a largish store over thier. over here you ask for anything larger than a 1GB SD card and they look at you as if it hassent been invented yet (although i note that some retailers are now getting the larger capacity cards)

ethier way, i am happy with dealing with ebay. i get bettre prices than anyone i know and i get stuff they havent even heard of

I use a Socket rev K bluetooth CF card which works very well in most pdaXrom versions (haven't been able to get it to work in R198 but I think this will soon be resolved).
I use it to connect to a v600i mobile with 3G and get up to about 120Kbytes/sec internet access.  I use this every day for web browsing and email as well as small software updates.  I am also hoping to use it for GPS when I find a suitable reciever.

It does chew a bit more power but I get about 3 good hours of browsing on my 1900mAH battery.
I wasn't aware that these could be used for BT audio... anyone got this going?

As far as I can tell (and I've tried a few revs) none of the socket cards have the SCO stuff wired up. So no headset or A2DP
