I was just talking on IRC, and discovered this:
http://akirose.tistory.com/ (http://akirose.tistory.com/)
Apparently it's a beta 3 tweaked with E17 (kind of like pdaXii13 with E17).
I thought it would be worth mentioning.

Holy Mackerel!
That looks good! I think I need to reflash my 1000 tonight even though I can't read a word of Korean.
-
Supposidly the ROM is in english with a Korean input option. I had the direct DL URL, but not any more, so you'll have to poke around on the site to find it.

Here is what I found:
[a href=\"http://akirose.tistory.com/95147]Installer for C1000, C3100 & C3200 (most recent)[/url]
C1000 only NAND image (older) (http://akirose.tistory.com/95144)
Since I was on R198 on C1000 I'm trying the NAND image first. Wish me luck it is flashing while I type this.
-
Good luck!
Am I right in thinking that it uses the SHARP bootloader since it is based off of beta 3?
I expect to hear first impressions soon!

Sorry, I had to cut the grass.
Yes, it is using the Sharp Bootloader. The ASCII anime image on boot up is a cute trick. Loading X to E17 seems to be faster than beta3 (MatchBox/OpenBox), pdaXii13 (iceWM and MatchBox/OpenBox) and R198 (MatchBox/FBPanel).
Default theme is quite nicely laid out but, a bit dark for my tastes. Included apps is more sparse than pdaXii13 (not fair since pdaXii13 can use an HDimage) but more than Beta3 and R198. Missing Cards and Volume applets. Included apps and utilities are:
GameBoy Advance Emulator
QComicBook
FireFox 1.5
Nateon
PPP Dialer
Sylpheed
XChat IRC
easytag
Gnome Music Player Client
OSS Mixer
AbiWord
KAPI
KOPI
JustReader
LeafPad
XPDF
PWM/PI
Galculator (got a error loading this one)
Sakura (Terminal Emulator)
StarDict
Package Manager
That's it for now. I have to hit the gym. More to follow.
-
Great, looking forward to it.

My favorite GUI file manager XFE is not included in this NAND so, will be flashing using the more recent installer. The NAND also doesn't include any GUI network setup like beta3 and pdaXii13; I'm hoping there is something included with the installer to help out here because I'm not getting anywhere with ifconfig and iwconfig in the console on the NAND. Here we go for round two....
-
Okay he calls this pdaXrom derivative/fork Maydew. The Maydew installer looks just like the beta3 installer with 6 main screen options:
1 Install new ROM
2 Upgrade previous Maydew (>=1.1.0)
3 NAND Flash Utils
4 Run console shell
5 Maydew general disclaimer
6 Reboot
I was tempted to try the upgrade but, figured it may not be working properly since he is calling this a Release Candidate.
The NAND utilities have the same loader limit fixes and resizing options. He recommends setting it to 121 (at least as far as the botched Google translation says). I forgot to check this before I started the installer so I did the fix and resize to 121.
I then did a new ROM install. Install looked just like beta3.
Rebooted and ...........
no ASCII anime image!
I got the same old login screen but it says Maydew RC 1 not pdaXrom beta 3. good old root and startx and I'm in the familiar calibration screen. I calibrate away and then I'm into e17 goodness.
Same theme as before (still too dark for my tastes) but the familiar e17 default bling bling theme is there too.
The Korean input widget is towards the bottom right hand corner. I need to figure out how to disable it because when I accidentally tapped on it killed my keyboard, taps and power button. Isn't that an old beta3 that Meanie fixed?
The old power button problem is back again. He really should have used pdaXii13 as his base instead.
Some of the applications and utilities are different this time around. Here they are:
Galculator
Sakura (Terminal)
X Virtual Keyboard
XFE (XFI, XFQ, XFV, XFW)
xircp
QComicbook
PPP Dialer
Gnome Music Player Client
OSS Mixer
SMPlayer
AbiWord
JustReader
KAPI
KOPI
OMPI (E-mail)
PWMPI
LeafPad
Xournal
XPDF
CPU Config
Date and Time
Input Setup
LAN & Wifi (Yes!!)
Light & Power
Package Manager
PPP Modem
QtConfig
USB
UIM
Got WIFI up in a jiffy on this one. Need to add FireFox and TyScummVM for more testing.
EDIT: Okay I found some weirdness. Maydew is really using pdaXrom beta3 as it's base. The SD driver is the old 1GB max one so my C1000 can't see my 4GB SD. I installed Meanie's sdcard and tried to restart from the menu and it is hung at the Unloading USB modules stage. Same thing for shutdown. It looks like this guy is not leveraging any of Meanie's work including his roll your own ROM stuff. Talk about reinventing the wheel.
-
When I asked him if this was like pdaXii13, he didn't know what it was, so I'm not sure that that's intentional.
-
Oh Man! I haven't this much fun with my Zaurus since Meanie made IceWM the default in pdaXii13. Yes, I can be a total geek at times. Tons of eye candy and decent GUI performance.
I found a workaround to the USB module unload lock ups when I request reboots and shutdowns in E17. Choose Log off instead and once X unloads I then type reboot and it restarts fine.
I found that Gnumeric is also installed on this ROM by default.
Aki_Rose (MayDew developer) has posted how to remove his Korean customizations on his blog. The instructions are here. (http://akirose.tistory.com/95150)
I haven't had a chance to try them yet but once I do I will post back here.
Aki_Rose has also joined OESF and I requested his validation.

Glad to hear he is signing on here.
What kind of resource use did e17 have? It is damned pretty, and if it isn't too terrible of a pig and it doesn't do horrid things it might make a nice option. Any other bits maydew has improved on?
Of course, I'm feeling pretty conservative about having my Z actually work for me these days so I'm mainly interested in in how maydew improvements can be brought into pdaxii13 (and eventually a 2.6 pdaxrom when it works as solidly as ii13)

e17 is still very much a work in progress but, it has come a long way usability wise since I tried it last November. To make things as fair as possible for the resource comparisons. I install Meanie's pdaxcfg 0.3.6 on MayDew. Both machines are set to an extended 121MB root partition. These results were taken after rebooting both machines. Below are the results for my 1000 running MayDew RC1 and my 3200 running pdaXii13 Akita with a Full image upgrade to 5.4.6 (IceWM)
..............................MayDew RC1.........pdaXii13 Akita Full 5.4.6
Free Memory...........13932KB...............1220KB
Cached Memory.......0KB......................32KB
Flash Available.........25.2MB.................47.5MB
As you can see e17 has a smaller memory footprint but, it is not running as many services and daemons as pdaXii13 (eg. no cards applet). The flash usage under MayDew appears to be larger but, you must keep in mind that my 3200 is setup with usr on the microdrive and therefore most of the large binaries (like firefox) are not installed in flash on my 3200 whereas all binaries are installed in flash (including firefox).
I'm too lazy to stopwatch on various apps.
Firefox load times are comparable between the two once MayDew copy is configured with the same settings.
ScummVM appears to have a slight advantage speedwise under MayDew but, that is only noticeable when running The Curse of Monkey Island's cutscenes.
e17 loads up faster than iceWM but, a large portion iceWM is running off of the microdrive.
e17 doesn't work with the ROX pinboard (no drag and drop desktop) or the matchbox applets (no cards or wifi monitor) so you do loose some functionality. e17s power management is minimal compared to pdaXii13 so the battery is goes down much faster.
I would say MayDew RC1 is roughly equivalent to Meanie's early pdaXii13 builds. If he keeps at it he should get closer to the 5.4.6 level in a very short time. This is, IMHO, an excellent first release. I hope that answers your questions.
-
It does indeed, thanks.
The memory useage for e17 was less than I expected. My last experience with e17 was not much fun either, glad to hear it is getting better

I think we should be thanking you for making e17 easily available to us on pdaXrom.

You're welcome Aki_Rose. Thanks again for making MayDew. I am enjoying it very much on my 1000. I look forward to your next release.
-
you can always patch maydew to pdaXii13 by uprading to pdaXii13. the upgrade option should leave the e17 stuff untouched...
allternatively, you can also install e17 on pdaXii13 quite easily.
add the following feed to ipkg.conf
http://alphagemini.org/files/feed/ (http://alphagemini.org/files/feed/)
then run
ipkg update
ipkg install e17
the updated version of xselect (contained in the xsession package) will give you an additional wm option to select from. try installing xsession first and run xselect, then install e17 and run xselect again to see the difference
of course installing just e17 on pdaXii13 won't give you any customisations like you get in maydew...
i would like to encourage aki_rose to apply pdaXii13 patches to maydew to fix many beta3 bugs
-
Falko's e17 is so old version. ^^
I know him... and I make the e17 Install based Falko's alphagemini.org data.
but, Maydew built-in New version of E17 (20070601-CVS).
It is some problem solved. "File Manager, Desktop Icon etc..."
E17 is unstable. but, I think... so good Window Maker.
-
Aki_Rose,
Please consider using the pdaXrom patches that Meanie has created on MayDew. Meanie is part of the pdaXrom team and has done a great job stabilizing pdaXrom beta3 with his pdaXii13 patches. pdaXii13 is currently one of the most stable Zaurus ROMs thanks to those beta3 patches that he created. He is also working to do the same stabilization for pdaXrom R197 and R198 with his service packs. Thank you.

man, I just compiled 0.38 and 0.39 is available now since yesterday...
I wonder what's new
-
i have updated my enlightenment package with some Zaurus customisations, ie got rid of unneeded options such as hibernate, etc... which is now in my feed.
i have also built the latest e17 source and am in progress of testing that. i will package it up and upload it whenever it is ready...

Looking forward to the latest- wityhout a good bit of customization enlightenment seems like a realy cool looking power hungry fluxbox. I love to have it to show off, but haven't gotten very far into what it will actually do.. it seems as though it could be useful on something like the Z

Well, I just got e17 under pdaXii13 up and running on my Akita. My biggest hurdle was upgrading from Akita base to full. Console commands and Linux newb lead to much head stratching and google searches. Reminder to self to write up detailed upgrade instruction on Tyrannozaurus for newbs like me.
Meanie, your e17 packages works great! Thank you very much. Unfortunately, it loses my taskbar customizations when I reboot. It keeps resetting to your settings. I'm not a fan of the CPU tracking or panels but, I like my Start and Volume showing. It does remember my theme switch so that's fine. I think I'll switch to ClearLooks since I like my blues and lighter themes.

edit /usr/local/bin/e17-init and comment out whatever you don't like...
I build the new 0.39 version but it crashes. I suspect the culprit is the fact that it now seems to be supporting cpu scaling which of course is a 2.6 kernel thing that does not exist in 2.4 kernel... i'll try it out on r198 instead...

Okay to answer my own question. DO NOT do a ipkg upgrade or an install over top. I lost my USR and ETC on SD card. They just disappeared after a reboot. Nasty! Serves me right for not backuping up when I'm playing with software in the unstable feed.
I would recommend switching to IceWM or OpenBox first then removing all the e17 ipks and then reinstalling.
Also wiping out everything and starting over from scratch works well too.
The Card ejectors work great Meanie. Thanks.
This version feels a bit more stable than the last one but, it still has a ways to go before it is as stable as iceWM. I lost all my Start Menu apps and favs after a resume. I had reboot to get them back.
Could I request that the ClearLooks theme be included in your unstable feed? It is faster and more lightweight than Carbon14.
Thanks again.
