Title: Filetype Icons
Post by: jason123 on March 11, 2004, 04:50:50 pm
Hi -- I\'m using the Sharp 3.13 Rom on a SL-5500 and i was wondering if there was any way to assign icons to filetypes.   Even ones i have nothing to open them with (ie zip files)

For the answer to the first part of your question, yes.  Just go to the Tab Setting, click on the icon that you want to change, and change it accordingly.  Once this is done, both the icon and any files associated with the app will show the new .png that you associated with it.  Was that your question?!?

As a sidenote, there are some great Gnome replacement icons that you can grab at this site:
http://art.gnome.org/art-icons/other/index.php (http://art.gnome.org/art-icons/other/index.php)

I\'ve replaced most of my icons with pngs from that site, and I much prefer the current look!

in a roundabout way yeah ... I\'ve replaced most of the original icons with crystal or gnome or kde icons but i\'d like to apply icons for files that have no application binding and I\'m not sure how I\'d go about doing that.

#locate mime

/home/QtPalmtop/etc/mime-types
/home/QtPalmtop/etc/smime-types
/home/QtPalmtop/etc/.mimetype.cache

I messed with this some time back the old Sharp 2.3X ROM recocognized my .ogg music and the 3.XX ROM including tckROM do not.  I finally gave up, but this has got to be the starting point!  The only other file in linux that usually defines mime types is mailcap, and it does not exist on my Z.....  <shrug>

Icons for files are defined by the MimeTypeIcons settings in the .desktop files under /home/QtPalmtop/apps. So you must have an associated application for a file to have an icon.

You can only hide .desktop files by putting a dot/period at the start of the filename in the usual Linux manner (e.g. .myapp.desktop), but I think Qtopia completely ignores that file then, including any mime type settings.
