Title: gprs on zaurus
Post by: vemp on March 12, 2004, 06:15:23 pm
I\'ve searched around and it seems the audiovox cf gprs card works in a zaurus.  I was wondering if anyone can confirm it or has any input in the matter.  If this is the case I want to get a gprs card for mine for use with Tmobile.  (Ive also read in many posts that they offer free \"wap\" access...ie access to web and mail ports. But who says i cant cant setup a sshd on port 80 at home.    )

Audiovx card works great for me with tmobile.
I commute from NJ to NYC by train every day
and spend 2 hours using my c860 with this card for
browsing and/or emailing.Opera works great but its
even better to ssh into your server and use links browser.
I am amazed how well that works, especially now that
QKonsole can take entire screen. I run openbsd server
at home with ssh on port 23 which allows me to get in from
zaurus without any issues with tmobile.

I have tmobile, and I am paying $20 for the unlimited data plan.  You *may* be able to get unlimited access for the http, smtp and pop services for free.  See this link for the details:

Not sure what the deal is with that, and obviously you\'d be limited to mail and internet, but it\'s worth a try!

Yes, Audiovox RTM8000 works great for zaurus. You may need some setup changes in the serial config file, and add a modified serial_cs module (available in the ZUG download area under drivers), and there\'s a how-to in the security/networking area.

I don\'t know much about T-Mobile, I use Fido in Canada. Their unlimited plan is limited. I got a warning mail that I was exceding my monthly limit on their unlimited plan

I have unlimited $30 plan even though I also have their voice plan and had
option to get $20 plan instead. However, I wanted a separate card for gprs
so I don\'t have to pull it out and move it between the phone and zaurus.
BTW, I used your great instructions to get gprs working with this card.
There are some adjustments for t-mobile but what you had got me very
close to start with. Also, on the latest few Cacko ROM\'s working serial_cs
is already there so you don\'t have to download anything.

This explains why it now recognizes the card by just plugging it in, instead of depmod etc.

I need to update the how-to, to basically recommend the Qtopia 1.2 ROM, and another important thing, that the scripts are no longer needed! The initial problem was that the dial-up gui didn\'t allow quotes, but in fact it does allow them, if you escape the quotes.  So in essence, all that\'s needed is modify the serial config, to add \"uart 16550A\" and use the GUI to add the escaped sequence.  I took screen shots, just to make it easier for newbies, and will try to upload them somewhere.

They go for a round US $200, and some times you\'ll find some on eBay.

I got mine from these guys:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/able-comp/glob...obwirincfp.html (http://shop.store.yahoo.com/able-comp/globwirincfp.html)

But it seems they changed brands, so you might want to ask them first if it\'s a co-branded Audiovox.

Convergentech also has them, but co-branded:
