Title: What ROM is best
Post by: Computer_geek on March 12, 2004, 09:52:50 pm
What is the best ROM for the SL-5600?  Should I just leave the one on it that came with it?  I have problems opening more then one program at once (keep rinning out of memory), and i really want to make the screen rotate! Or can i do that with the one ROM I have?

What are the perks of different ROM\'s

Thanks,

Actually, what I would like to know is:

What are the differences between the different ROMs?

Which are most stable?

Is it possible to return to the Sharp ROM, and if so how?

Are there any issues with the PXA250 processor (other than the whole special-kernel issue)?

And... OpenZaurus\' one current offering for the 5600 says it\'s \"testing.\" I really want the integrated rotation but not at the risk of a paralyzed Zaurus... Is it OK?

All of the roms available for the 5600 are qtopia roms based on the sharp rom.  Not much difference in them, other than what apps are included in the rom.

The only one I would not recommend is OpenZaurus, as it is not stable on the 5600.  Stay away from it and save yourself some frustration.

I have used tkcrom and Zynergy, both are good roms.  tkcrom *seems* to feel a little faster and more stable, but I have no stats to back that up.  Zynergy has problems with the gui ipk installer.

I\'d recommend trying both of those out, and see what feels right for you.

Do a search on these forums for \'swapfile\'.  You will find the info you need to get rid of that memory error.  Is that sandisk card a SD card or CF?  If it is a SD card I\'d recommend installing whatever apps you can to the card and creating a swapfile on your internal memory.

Thanks!

Here is something posted by Tumnus, Oct 03, 2003:

] Only OZ can do rotation on the fly because that has been added to Opie, which is open source. All the other ROMs use the
] commercial version of Qtopia which is closed-source and only has that feature on the SL-Cxxx devices.

So it looks as if the choice is only beween qt-rotate (which sometimes makes my touchscreen seize up until I reboot) or OZ (unreliable for the 5600). From what I have been able to glean from other websites, the tckrom rotation restarts Qtopia every time you use it. I suppose the reboot is a small price to pay for rotation. Perhaps best to wait for a stable version of OZ, then, if one is (hopefully) in the works?

For what it\'s worth, on my 5500 I use Sharp\'s 3.10 ROM, and rotation can only be done by restarting Qtopia.  I have not found this to be a big problem.  Rotating Qtopia takes 46 seconds (I just timed it).

I do recommend theKompany.rom which I have been using on my SL5600.  I like it and have no problems with it.  Purchased some applications from the Kompany and they are fully compatible with the rom and SL5600.  That is another plus for this rom.
hope this proves useful
