Title: Pdaxrom R198... What Should I Know?
Post by: Antikx on October 03, 2007, 07:44:57 pm
I switched back to R198 (and installed SP8).
For those using it... what advice can you give me? What should I know? What tips can you give me?
I've always like IceWM, is anyone running it under R198?
thanks.

Broken:
-Network GUI (use Wi-Fi Radar, or my Wi-Fi Radar from a relatively recent thread)
-Inputconfig.py (?)
-USB networking (?)

Other stuff to know:
-You can safely use my feed ()
-EvilWM is a great WM, if minimalism is your thing (lighter than IceWM, and just about everything else, for that matter, hence me liking it )
-No BVDD
-Links2 is a good web browser (in my feed, depends on most of the graphics libs)
-If development is your thing, make a "development" partition on your SD card and extract ZGCC to it, then set it to mount at /opt/.../3.4.6-xscale-softvfp

I don't know why, but I can never think of stuff to say when I need to, so I'll be updating this at least once.

Thanks.
EvilWM sounds good. Do you have any sort of how-to on switching over to it, tweaked config files, etc?
Is it as simple as installing the ipk?

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_EvilWM (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_EvilWM)

It seems to bee working well so far.
Any gotchyas I should know about?

Oh, EvilWM looks so nice!
This keyboard-centric WM will fit the current Debian/Z as mouse right click still misbehaves...

No, I think everything in EvilWM works as advertised, except suspending in X11 fails most of the time.

It will suspend fine, then start to resume, and will, most of the time, freeze on a black screen with the blinking cursor in the corner. Many times, if you let it sit for a bit (A few minutes) it will resume just fine. You can make it resume by pressing the power button again, but then when you try to resuspend it, apm says its busy.

I don't know what the issue is, but I'm fairly sure it will turn up sometime.

Really ... then perhaps ratpoison will be a true mouse killer.

what if you were to try resuming with the home button?

Nope, same situation.

I don't know why, but I've never liked RatPoison. EvilWM just seems better to me.

I was able to duplicate your problem, but...
If I suspend by typing:
Code: [Select]
apm --suspendin a bash terminal it seems to resume without fail. ya!
Now how do I change the button to use the command that works?

It didn't work for me, at least not the first time I tried it. I'll try again soon.

For the button thing, perhaps something in /etc/apm?

hmm... straange I tried it 10 times. maybe I got lucky.

I should note that I'm only using the home button to resume.

I was using the home key as well. Perhaps I broke something elsewhere. Oh, well. It's not a big deal to me

there seems to be a lot scripts in there.
hmmm I tried a few of them with no success.
I changed the line where it runs "suspend" to "apm --suspend" but maybe I haven't hit the right script yet. Meanie?  InSearchOf?

personally, i think there is not much difference between running openbox without matchbox components and just evilwm besides that evilwm does not have window decorations.
anyway, evilwm runs fine on pdaXii13 and suspends and resumes correctly without fail. it is just too minimal. initially when I build pdaXQtrom, I tried evilwm and fluxbox/blackbox and basically fluxbox won.

Sorry Meanie I guess what I was asking was... what script actually runs the suspend command when you press the power button?

Other stuff to know:
-No BVDD
So is this something that will work down the road or is BVDD or are we just going to have to make do without it.
Please excuse my ignorance.

I'm thinking the case is that it can be fixed, but nobody has done so yet.I'm not entirely sure, though.

the bvdd is a 2.4 kernel enhancement as in module specific for the C3x00/C1000 hardware only. the equivalent in feature on the 2.6 kernel is the pxa overlay feature which currently is experimental and mplayer and other apps or libs such as sdl that want the specific optimization need to be compiled with support for that...

Thanks for clearing that up Meanie. It makes sense.
