looks like it'll be a linux software suite, I guess with a standard set of base apps.

very interesting... so, who will be first to have a proper Google linux smartphone - I reckon Motorola because they've already had a few models out which are linux based (using QT as their graphical toolkit), or will OpenMoko produce a usable release first? Will OpenMoko be googlephone compatible?

I think Nokia might be in the running too. Don't forget their Internet Tablets run Linux, and a forth-coming model will be Wi-Max enabled. They also seem to be cross-branding their more advanced phones and their tablets by refering to them both as 'N-Series'.

now all those guys trying to get linux on the qteks will be without job!!
I think it's an exciting move; all linux-qteks, neo, and trolltech greenphone wannabes have a real alternative; just imagine any existing HTC with open source (aka linux) inside!!

what are the chances any of these will be as thumb typable as the z?
what are the chances there will be a debian-based distro on any of these?

For thumb-typable, I'd say very small, but not 0%.

anyway, it should run pretty much any version of linux just fine, but you might be constrained to use the kernel as shipped because of the drivers, and the GLIB variant too for compatibility.

for a severely disabled person for whom all typing is painful, having the same distro on the zaurus and the desktop can help reduce typing by reducing the need to find how to do things in the new distro, guaranteeing a similar set of available utilities with exactly the same names and behavior, and ensuring compatible protocol versions for x, vnc, and others thereby reducing test cycles setting up a potentially complex ergonomic setup that allows controlling the desktop while lying down. and a standard multiarch distro might potentially have other, similar benefits, such as not having to compile or request anybody to compile a tool if it is already there.

no, I wasn't offended, just surprised by how many people want debian on the zaurus... angstrom is loosely based on debian, in fact, they could probably wrapper ipkg with a dpkg command which translated the commands and it'd be hard to notice.

Follow http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/building-angstrom (http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/building-angstrom) and put ANGSTROM_PKG_FORMAT = "deb" in your local.conf and you will have an angstrom rootfs with apt, dpkg and .deb packages. Easy as that.

Would it make more sense to say three big bonuses of running Debian on the Zaurus are apt-get, a complete & standard documetation system and the whole Debian repos?
To me it is no obsession with debian at all, because I am more obsessed with running a full-fledged *nix distro on the Z.
Before using Debian my Z ran OpenBSD. If it has SD write support I may not have switched to Debian. OpenBSD/Z also comes very close, except some hardware functionalities which have yet to be fixed and speed improvement.

my guess is that whether it is hard to notice depends strongly on the noticer.

Aye ... ... and if you noticed, he also mentioned ... "... I look forward to seeing all of your work" ... somehow that kinda creep me out ... with the word *work* ... with a $10m bounty, google
Granted, it's just a choice of words, but something about $10m and seeing our work and not our apps spooks me out. Ah well ...

i just made a diff between android and vanilla kernel, and...
... discovered goldfish .

Goldfish is the virtual arm platform that may be started in the emulator (QEMU) to see your applications running.
