I have sound working (well infact) except during playback in players like xmms there's a lot of pauses in the music. Seems to be during times when xfbdev and other apps get higher process time. Is there a way to make it so xmms plays without pauses?

Did you install xmms-mad?

yes Playback is rich and very good, just pauses when other apps eat processor time (at about 7 % or more)

Not sure but I think it was xmms it self ... I installed gqmpeg and it plays without the pauses and pops. Same songs, same machine etc So for now it the answer in the short term.
apt-get install gqmpeg
skins can be found at here (http://gqmpeg.sourceforge.net/mpeg-skin1.html).

i've just installed mpg123 and when i press the play button i have these error messages:
mpg123 disappeared (unexpected EOF)
Use 'madplay' instead
...
i double check that mpg123 IS here, and when i launch it i have this "use madplay message" too...
any hint ?

Check to see if libmad and libao is installed too. Noticed somewhere that parts of gnome actually remove libmad during installs.

In the ongoing quest to get XMMS to play without skips, I found xfmedia plays without skips too. Is there something I am missing to make XMMS play without skips?
