Title: 6000 Battery Bulge. Keep 6000 Or Sell?
Post by: bluedevils on November 17, 2007, 12:25:45 am
So I'm watching TV tonight and I noticed the 6000 wasn't lying flat on the table.  The battery had bulged.  I assume this is dangerous to use anymore (kinda scared it may shoot flames).  I'll try to safely discard the battery (city hazardous waste dump?) tomorrow.

I'm now at a crossroads.  Do I buy another battery (if it can be found) or do I sell what's left of the 6000?  I still have the 760 server and my everyday 3100.  Any suggestions?

trisoft can get hold of 6000 batteries at a not-insane price.

there's been some recent activity in Angstrom for Tosa, so the device isn't a dead duck.

when I get my act together and create an installer for TomTom to allow you to put in your TomTom x00 sd card into the Z and use the Z as a sat-nav, the 6000 might have a new lease of life.

the 6000 would also make a neat multimedia controller/player in your car, get a wifi enabled hard drive (Asus WLL-2.5R or Dlink GDSM600 thin) put in the boot of your car, SMB mount it and play MP3s via the zaurus!

I must have lost touch a bit.  I guess streamlinecpus is no longer around.  I'll probably try trisoft.  The 760 battery (from my original 5500 maybe) is starting to bulge a bit too.  The 760 I will still replace the battery, but I'm transferring server functions to the mac mini.  I'm now coming to the conclusion that I don't want a lithium ion device on 24/7.

thanks speculatrix,

I never thought of the 6000 as a dead duck, but it has always been an extra toy for me and I figure somebody may be able to put it to better use.  If a battery isn't expensive, then I may keep it as a toy.

Dang good idea since I have the car mount and FM transmitter for my C1K.  You said "boot" of your car... that's such a UK term...

bluedevil: my Tosa battery also bulged couple of month ago after a long cross-continent trip (don't know what's causing it). Fortunately I had a spare at hand and had another one in the sled. You you want to sell your tosa, let me know.

My battery bulged a couple of months ago as well.
I saw another thread on the 6000 forum and sent an email to Jeff at dynamism. He responded that they can still get them with a 7 - 10 day lead time.
I haven't ordered yet, but will eventually.

Yikes!  The battery cost at trisoft is not trivial.  joeabbott, can you pm me the price of the battery from dynamism?

xjqian, somebody else PMed me for it, but your number 2 in line if I decide to sell it.  I sold my sled a long time ago.  If these are the cost of replacing the 6000 battery, then I'm more incline to sell it.
