Title: Ka/pi Address Book Migration To Outlook 2003
Post by: daniel3000 on January 18, 2008, 08:24:00 am
Hello,

what is the easiest and safest way to migrate KA/PI address book data to Outlook 2003?

I have tried CSV export from KA/PI, heavily modified the resulting file in a text editor removing newlines from notes etc., then imported into Excel, saved as Excel sheet, then tried to import the Excel file into Outlook. The last step crashes Outlook!

When I export another CSV from Excel and try to import the CSV into Outlook, the fields are not recognized. All data is redognized to be in the first column (as if one opens a CSV file in Excel via the "file open" menu instead of "Data / Import"...

Is there another way?

I have 450 contacts in my database and have used a lot of the more common fields (home/work addres/phone, company/role information, birthday etc.

Is synchronizing via Sharp DTM safe (i.e. can I be sure that no data is lost or assigned to Outlook fields in a wrong way)?

Thanks a lot

Daniel

It is a while since I have done this so I hope my memory is serving you correctly!   You should be able to synchronise the Kapi files with the Sharp Address book if the DTM ipk from the kopi/kapi packages has been installed. BACKUP your working Kapi files first! When you get the files into the Sharp Address book you should be able to synchronise with OUTLOOK. I have done this in the past using the built in Kapi/Kopi sync. I have approx 650 records in my address book.

It was rather frustrating though: Be prepared to blank your Kapi files until you work out which is local and which is remote! That is why the backup is essential!

The sync from the Sharp address book to Outlook can also be very frustrating. The usb connection can be problematic, I blame Windows here, and Outlook seems to throw random problems into the situation.

There are various pim programs that can import the KAPI/Kopi files easily. They tend to be Linux programs but some of them can successfully export to formats that Outlook can cope with. YMMV.

Good luck.
