I grew up in Tucson, AZ.  In the past the cheapest route was taking the Arizona Shuttle (http://www.arizonashuttle.com).

i am about to get an sl-c3200, but first i want to try the thumbpad and the display to make sure they are ergonomically ok for me (they are probably both ok, but i have special needs).  if somebody is willing to let me thumb type for 1 minute and look at the unit in the dark, then that problem is solved.

You might want to try going to one of the TFUG (Tucson Free UNIX Group) (http://www.tfug.org) get togethers.  Maybe joining their mailing list and asking if anyone has a SL-C3x00 or clamshell Zaurus that you could see at the next meeting or something.  TFUG was a pretty nice group back in the late nineties when I was living in Tucson.

I'll let you know what I'm in the area, not planned my itinerary yet.
