Title: Firefox Mobile Version, Fennec Browser
Post by: Jon_J on April 11, 2008, 11:36:43 am
This would be the greatest thing for the Zaurus since sliced bread!  and I think this needs a new thread discussing it, so I posted it here.

I'm going to paste a quote from the Andriod subforum by "speculatrix"

I think the best hope for a new browser on zaurus is the firefox3 derived fennec

I think the best I was just reading about FF3's reduced memory use and popped over here to see if there was a fennec buzz
If this gets compiled for the Zaurus, I can stop my frantic search for an Opera version that runs in pdaxrom!

I wonder how we could get early access to it?

Aza Raskin wouldn't happen to be Jef Raskin's son would he?

Jef Raskin was the "father" of the Macintosh for those of you who didn't know.

Edit - Holy Interfaces Batman!  The Wikipedia confirms Aza is his son.  Now I really can't wait to try this browser.

the demo shows that user's interaction with the browser has changed very significantly, though I worry it might become annoying in the long run. if fennec lives up to expectations, it will be a fantastic tool for any handheld device.

Actually, I now find "regular" web browsers annoying since I got my iPod Touch, I barely use either of my Z's for browsing these days, which is why I am looking forward to fennec.

I wonder if Fennec will support java and flash. Does the iphone browser (Safari) allow, for instance, playing shockwave games online?

The N8x0 running Debian has Iceweasel 3 (as of a few days ago), with (apparently) working Gnash (flash) and Java. I assume it would transfer to the Z OK (That's the point of EABI, no?, sorry for all of the parentheses).

I read somewhere (can't find the link anywhere, so maybe dreaming?) that Adobe wants to open up the flash player so it can become ubiquitous in the embedded market.  If this is correct, it seems as though our Z's might get a nice fresh breath of life!
