I have my 860 running EABI for a long while. The only key is to find the right kernel. So far the Angstrom one works fine.
The rootfs is not specific for individual models and kernels.
There are some discussions in the pinned threads.

Search this Debian forum. Keyword: 860. Show results as posts. There you go.

I am pretty close to that myself. It may be a piece of cake for some among us, but let's not pretend that searching this forum will give clear and concise instruction. I've done it and I am just more confused as a result.

Of course if there is a thread that lays it out in a way that can be followed, with links that work, I will be very, very pleased.

Perhaps one of the people familiar with the process could write up instructions in the Tyrannozaurus wiki? Or the OESF one?

It does seem that the forum presents a confused/confusing picture about the various types of install and which of EABI, OABI to go for. I suspect that the Debian Armel (EABI) project is approaching success. See the post, by pelrun, in the stickied 'repository'  thread.

[The original TitchyLinux install method used a standard Debian Arm (OABI) business card iso. I think it is likely that such a method of install will come along for the Armel system.   ]

For those people who are less patient than me: the sticky threads bear searching through and there are reports of success for the 860 and 7xx series. Whether anyone can find the time to wikify these results is another matter?

Here are a couple of threads I found that might be of help. The first thread has a post from ZDevil linking to a more substantial one and one with a kernel to download..

Thread 1Debian on a 7xx (https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=25663) and
Thread2
Dualbooting Thread (https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=25555).

Thread 1
has posts by ZDevil and Henrysviper which look useful. Thread2 is long and needs a fair bit of study.

HTH

Cheers

OK, I shall concentrate on these threads, and raise questions there. Thanks.

I am using a c860 as you know, and while I know it is not as powerful as other Zs that followed, it still has the potential to knock the spots off my Pocket PC, and I just wish I could get it to the place where it had the chance to do so.

Sorry, but I've now looked at the threads again and I realise I am just so utterly out of my depth. The fun has gone out of this.

I reiterate the question that is the title for this thread. A definitive answer is not found.

Hello everyone,

I have successfully installed debian to my C860.
The steps are very simple.
1) Download Angstrom from angstrom autobuild area, anything is ok after 2007.12-r16.
Choose alt-boot imagesm so you don't have to download alt-boot.
link here : http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/unstable/autobuild/ (http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/unstable/autobuild/)
2) Install angstrom.
3) After installation, boot angstrom, enter boot-password, then you can boot from sd card
4) reboot normally. copy /lib/modules to a storage card.
using alt-boot.
Do the following steps in linux-desktop.
4) download zdevil eabi-rootfs.
5) using linux desktop, create 2 partitions in sd card.
6) untar zdevil rootfs to partition 1 of sd card.
7) change partition 2 to swap.
8) do a mkswap on partition 2.
9) mount partition 1. change directory to /sbin
10) do a ln -s init init.sysvinit.
11) from the storage card in 4, copy to rootfs sd card the contents of /lib/modules.
Now insert the sd card to you 860.
12) boot using alt-boot choose sd card to boot and you have debian.

BR,

Felix.

Thank you Felix for this explanation. Could you let me know the link to zdevil's rootfs as I seem to have found a few and don't know which is the one you got to work.
What size swap would you recommend?

Thanks

Dear Macwiz,

Sorry for not replying earlier since my computer broke.
zdevil's rootfs is sticky on top  named A Clean, Fresh, Configured Eabi Rootfs Tarball so just
look up.
I have swap as 256MB.

BR,

Felix.
