Title: Distribution Without A Working Browser - Switch From Eabi To Oabi?
Post by: maemorandum on April 23, 2008, 11:10:35 am
From sharprom --->> cacko --->> openzaurus --->> pdaXii13 --->> r198 --->> debian eabi --->> to titchy oabi?

There is no real browser in eabi.
Dillo seems to be too weak - no frames - no java.
Firefox is loading 6 minutes and segfaults - always.
Iceweasel needs two minutes to start and crashes when flash-applications appear.
Icehamster is faster, nice but crashes because of the same reason like iceweasel too.
Konqueror with the flashplugin might to be a solution, but kde fails to install (broken packages, broken-packages, broken-packages ...).

......... , anyway iceweasel crashes and hangs, which sometimes forced me to reset and reboot which ends in several fsck-routines and fixes (no-backup --> always praying  ).

Titchy Oabi apologies to be slow-loading, but includes a working firefox. For a non-programmer, like me, oabi might be a sulution. In eabi it is often very hard for me, to put together all the cryptic forum-posts, to get a working application.

What worth is a distribution without a working browser? Is eabi more stable than eabi?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

S O L V E D !
Code: [Select]
apt-get install iceweaselNow, after the last upgrade, iceweasel will start without problems.

(Seems, that there is a "political" conflict between Debian and Mozilla, so firefox has been replaced by Iceweasel!)

What about epiphany?

Epiphany  is able to handle java and frames but crashes/ when a flash-application is part of a website.

Changed my sources.list from the old stable sources to:

[div class=\'codetop\']CODE[/div][div class=\'codemain\' style=\'height:200px;white-space:pre;overflow:auto\']deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian (http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian) unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://matrixmen.free.fr/zaurus/debian (http://matrixmen.free.fr/zaurus/debian) sid main contrib non-free[/div]

Then i did a
[div class=\'codetop\']CODE[/div][div class=\'codemain\' style=\'height:200px;white-space:pre;overflow:auto\']apt-get install konqueror konqueror-plugin-gnash[/div]

Now, konqueror and epiphany-gecko seem to be more stable. And, konqueror shows flash-applications. No more crashes.
But - iceweasel still won´t work.   and - there seem to be no other working application-handlers for the browsers like wmv, real ...

I am still waiting for a working iceweasel (firefox).

Perhaps the last two items on this page (http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_10.html) would help.

Two GREAT browsers for debian-eabi:

1. arora (qt4+webkit based): small and fast. Only problem: cannot access gmail for now. And, its in the debian feed so easy install.
2. midori: I have built the latest from source and it has become nice and stable.

I recommend both browsers.

Now that I have a fresh install, Iceweasel works great!

About epiphany browser (epiphany-browser and epiphany-webkit). I've tried it and found out quite fast and nice if not the one problem - it cant save files to disc.  I press ctrl-shift-s or press 'save as' File menu item and nothing happens - no dialog, no file on disc. Also when i try to download torrent file it wont suggest to save it, but display its contents in current window. But the same time other browsers i tried do ok (and mime config files seems ok too).
Anyone faced this issue before ? Any suggests to solve it ?

Using epiphany-gecko, i am able to download files.
The trick is the reverse order:

First, select "File" then select "save as" and THEN!! klick on the object to download.

I've compiled latest midori from sources. It starts fast but... has no url box... So i have nowhere to type in url. The only way to run it is to put google as home page.  I did a quite straightforward building - download, untar, configure, make... Na magic done. So i wonder if its the midori known behaviour or the issue of the build process.

The trick from #12 does not work for me neither with epiphany-gekko nor with epiphani-webkit

# official source:
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian (http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian) unstable main contrib non-free

Found the Z to be too slow at full blow web browsing for the most part, I use dillo to view pages and documents.  I use EABI because all the hardware works properly, am a stickler for completeness.  OABI allways felt slower to me than EABI too IMO.

Now, after the last (dist)-upgrade i got iceweasel working. Looks like all the dependency-problems have been solved!

Code: [Select]
apt-get install iceweasel
Try it
