I have an SL-5500. When I try to update v2.8 ROM to 3.1 or 3.13, it starts copying the ROM then has a fatal error. The error appears as the ROM is copying, not while updating (blue status bar - - -). I ordered the Zaurus from E-Bay and it was shipped from Singapore. I noted that the ROM updates say US only. Does this mean I won\'t be able to update the ROM on mine? It\'s in English packaging and manuals, but says made in Japan on the box. Is it possibly a different model and can\'t use these ROM files?

Sounds like you got your Z from the same guy I did, Dan Hughes . Mine works fine flashing - it could be your USB settings or lack of free space. What I suggest you do is try flashing using the \"Linux\" method. Copy the OSPACK file to a CF card, put the CF card in the zaurus, switch to \"Replace battery\" mode, then hold down C, D and tap the reset button on the back. This should flash you to the latest version. Also, make sure you have at least 17MB free before flashing!
As some free advertising, if you do wanna buy a Zaurus in the UK from ebay, Dan Hughes from Singapore is definitely a safe bet!

That would require buying a CF. =( can I use an SD instead?
-
Nope, sorry... only CF Just make sure you have 17mb free before upgrading using the windows software.
-
I do have 17mb free. 22Mb of \"storage\". Did you have this problem as well or were you able to update the ROM with the windows SW?
-
I was able to update with no problem both ways. I tried the windows software way first too.
-
Do I need to update the usbdrivers before the upgrade? If I can sync should I be able to update?
I\'m still getting the abnormal program termination when I try to update it.

Install the latest version you can get your hands on . I used the latest \"dev\" rom package (3.13 I think).

Hi guys, I have a quick question (as usual ) I have a 5000d and have tried to flash a new ROM onto it using the CF card method. The first time I did it I used the Cacko Hybrid and it worked. I then tried to use the latest Sharp ROM which didn\'t work but now have some serious problems. I attempted to go back to the original ROM but now when I do the C+D and reset, the two lights come on but stay on forever ! Have I fried the Zaurus ? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Andrew

Is the original Sharp ROM ospack file the only file on the root of your CF card?
Did you try installing the Sharp 3.10 or 3.13 ROM on your SL-5000D? If so you might have made it unflashable since the Sharp updates overwrite the boot loader (a stupid thing for Sharp to do) and the 3.x ROMs are only for the SL-5500.
-
Oh oh, You hit the nail on the head. I was told by a friend (ex-friend now !) that the 5500 ROMS were compatible, so I tried the 3.13 ROM. Does this mean that the Z is now toast ?

If you only have the original Sharp SL-5000D ROM ospack on your CF card, which is definitely FAT16 formatted and the ospack file name is only \"ospack\" and it still will not flash then it is probably only Sharp that can resurrect it.

Yep I contacted Sharp and it turns out that I need to send it in to them.
Thanks for all help,
Andrew
