Title: Square Boxes Instead Of Text
Post by: keef on September 13, 2008, 08:13:45 pm
Hi all,

I am using cacko 1.23 full on a c860.
When using ZBEDIC the dictionary reader I get some square boxes instead of certain letters
in the pronunciation part of the readout.

Do I need to install a particular font?

It doesnt happen with any other program.

Many Thanks

Yes, try any of the fonts I gave links to in this thread:
https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showto...4&hl=zbedic (https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=26104&hl=zbedic)

Well, try this first (if you know how to install it without an ipk installer): http://www.hpc.ru/board/download.php?id=5408 (http://www.hpc.ru/board/download.php?id=5408)

If you don't know how to install fonts without an ipk installer then try one of efonts (the 24 is a larger size of 16; I use 24 on my C3100).

Then you should select that font in zbedic settings.

Try to copy the text that contains the "boxes" into a text editor and see if the boxes disappear, which I doubt.  The pronunciation part of the dictionary you selected likely uses IPA (international phonetic alphabet), which has lots of glyphs that are not found in standard Zaurus fonts that you have installed.

Again, this is an absence-of-font problem.

Thanks for the reply.

I do not know how to install fonts without an ipk. I will try to install some of the efonts you suggest.

If I remember correctly, to install fonts directly you need:

1. to put the qpf files in /opt/Qtopia/lib/fonts (or another directory where there is fontdir)

2. add the following line to fontdir file:

unifont unifont.bdf BDF n 50 160 u

3.  and then reboot zaurus.

It was a long time ago that I did it, so I could forget something.  It is possible that step 2 is not necessary (try without it first).
