Title: Raon Digital Everun Note Or The Libretto 2.0?
Post by: teh.sean on October 15, 2008, 06:48:09 pm
Well guys, this is as close as it gets to a Z killer for me. I've been (and still am) an avid Toshiba Libretto user for the past few years. The 50CT, 70CT and an imported M3 got me by in an 8'' x 4.5'' 1'' form factor that was easily touch type for even my large hands.

Everun Review from UMPCPortal (http://www.umpcportal.com/products/product.php?id=217)

Last month RAON released the Everun Note. In a very similar form factor (a cm shorter and a cm taller) it boasts the following:
2 USB ports
1 USB mini B port (for use as a hard drive: you can actually plug this laptop into another PC and it shows up as a portable HD)
Wifi
Bluetooth
SD card slot
USIM card slot (currently there isn't a 3G /HDSPA receiver in the laptop, though the pads are there!)
PCIe slot
60 GB HD
1GB ram
Dual Core AMD 1.2Ghz proc (which is faster than it sounds; this is leaps better than the current net book stuff)
ATI something or another beefy GFX card, I can't remember

At any rate, it's something I can touchtype on again that is pretty dang small.
The ups are size and power, the downs are the funny mouse and battery life (a pale 2.5 hrs), but for Libretto lovers, I think this is the next thing. Check it out and discuss.

I am getting one soon.  One thing I dont like is the battery life and the second is that it has no lan port or dongle for lan port.  I will most likely get a usb lan card for it.

I have to say I like the Everun Note quite a lot. I also liked the new Fujitsu U820 but the Note is very much cheaper and in some ways superior.
Whilst I also like the various "netbooks" like the MSI Wind and various eee's, I couldn't imagine carrying them around like I do my Zaurus and Nokia 800; however, the Note would need to manage a better battery life for me to consider replacing them.

Found a good review of the E-N, final page is a good summary:

Dynamism has an extended battery that gives about double the battery span I believe. It extends the base of the unit a little bit; it comes with foot 'extensions' to make up for this.

Also, now that I got mine in, I must say that this laptop runs very hot. I think I may have a faulty power supply, but I've seen cpu temps of 90 degC and hard drive temps over 65 degC on my unit, after just 15 minutes of a stress test. Just something else to consider. Size wise, it is sooooo impressive. The only problem I have is that since it is white, people are constantly asking, "Is that the new Mac?" The optical mouse is quite odd, and takes some time to get used to. Other than that, if anything would replace the Zaurus for me, it would be this. . . My eyes just aren't as good with the small screen. The Zaurus replaced my PSP for classic video game emulation, and now this thing is replacing the Z. . . The life of tech toys.

I got my Everun note yesterday and I must say that I like it a lot.  It is really powerful for what it is.  I just need the extended battery because the stock on sucks.

Ill have to get back to you on this.  Mine got so hot that its defective.  I had to send it back for a return.  After about 10 min of hard use the screen started artifacting like mad and then just went to a black screen with lines flashing all over it.  Hopefully I will have my replacement soon so I can test again.

For me the hard drive is a rule out.  Probably a higher risk of breakage from being dropped which with me is inevitable.  SSD probably faster and quieter.  I'm waiting on the SSD drive models coming out soon.

Well, after owning the Everun Note for a while, I must say that it is NOT a Zaurus killer, and in fact I find myself going back to the Z for many reasons.

1. Dependability: the Note has had lots of issues, like overheating and malfunctioning hardware. My power supply went bad, the webcam isn't working. From other owners, I have heard that hardware issues are common.

2. Battery Life: the Note, with all it's processing power, has poor power management.

3. Instant On: this is by far the most rewarding thing about the Zaurus. Waiting for a computer to boot is dead time. The Z (usually) does not have this problem.

I have a Fujitsu U810, and for fast boot (2-3 sec) I have linux+suspend on lid close, resume on lid open.

It works very well, an it's really as fast as my zaurus resume could be.

On resume, battery keeps the unit for 3/4 days. So after closing the lid on Friday, on Monday I resume in 2/3 sec without any problem.

Wow, that's incredible. I did NOT have that kind of suspend / resume performance with Windows XP on my 810 when I had it.  What linux were you running? Ubuntu? I also really HATED the keyboard configuration. I hear they fixed this with the u820, but I'm waiting for the price to drop a little for the new U.

I'm running ubuntu (8.04, 8.10 and now 9.04).

I also get external resolution 1920x1200, which, from windows is not available; windows graphic driver allows only a max external resolution of 1600x???.

My 40GB is splitted in a 20GB Vista and 17GB ubuntu partitions; I just have office 2000 installed in the windows partition, and I only have 500MB free!!

I have to agree that the cramped keyboard and its configuration is really poor; but on the other side, couldn't be bigger for this small footprint, I guess, so I have to live with it as long as I get such a small computer.

It's my main computer, actually, and soon it'll be 1 year old with daily use !!

Fast forward on the NOTE: Build quality on these units is not that good. I owned two, one of them is plagued with little issues here and there. I had a power supply that died on me after VERY LIGHT use. The webcam stopped working. It seems like there are lots of stories from other users like this.

The Fujitsu u810's kb has arrows keys accessible by pressing the FUNCTION BUTTON. Tab is FN+SPACE. That was what made me not like the machine.

As it stands right now, I need to send in the NOTE for repair under warranty, so I'll be using the Z more anyways!

And Linux support on the NOTE is not that good. Actually, it's pretty much driven by the community. I don't think RAON has made any attempts to push this.
