Post by: same on February 15, 2009, 12:23:02 pm
Hello,

Just another rootfs to play while waiting for the next cortez release

Upgraded "Zubuntu 1.0 Rc1" (Handhelds' Mojo Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 [Hasty]) to "Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 ARMEL".
Repository: http://ports.ubuntu.com/dists/jaunty/ (http://ports.ubuntu.com/dists/jaunty/)

NOW Repository should be http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/ (http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/)

Any performance difference between Hardy and Jaunty?
Notice you have pdaxrom in your sig - have you got it dual booting with Zubuntu by any chance?

I installed fvwm/icewm/openbox/matchbox on Zubuntu - they all run fine - just cant decide which is the lightest....

Does Jaunty have thunderbird working? What version is Firefox at?

Sorry for some many questions......
thanks

seems to be equivalent

Quote

i use kexec to boot pdaxrom, see debian andromeda (2or0) setup

icewm is more than enough for a zaurus, the screenshot is an icewm with  modified icebuntu theme for the zaurus

thunderbird segfaults, firefox versions are 3.0_3.0.6 and also 3.1_3.1~b3 but i would use midori, arora, epiphany-gecko or epiphany-webkit since firefox is too much but starts and runs (both versions).

NOTE: (apt-xapian-index disabled in rootfs) if you install firefox, as well as other apps, eventually the package system will install apt-xapian-index which has a process called update-apt-xapian-index that will eat all resources while rebuilding some index list in the background, better to kill the process and rename it to avoid being triggered again in the future. or first install apt-xapian-index and disable it.

Hi,

I installed it in on my CL-760 (a partition on the SD card booted with kexecboot) and I have the same problems as with the cortez release:

Ubuntu boots fine and I can use it in cli mode but I can't input anything (neither with the stylus nor with keyboard) in the GUI

The only keys that work are CTRL-ALT-Backspace ...

regards

Bernd

This sounds like what happened to me yesterday when I tried to startx as a non-root user on cortez' Ubuntu.  I just got a completely blank screen with an eratic arrow.

CTRL-ALT-backspace got me back to the command line.  startx works fine as root.

Hello,
I am trying to install Zubuntu on my C3000. I have followed Cortez guide as well as this one, however multiboot kernel deosn\t seem to find the files to boot off the compact flash card. First I had a Debian system installed on the internal MD and it found it, mounted it but gave an error that it could not find the kernel. However it then tried the compact flash but the only message I got was as shown below. I then removed the Debian distribution and it\s partitions and I get the same error now less the successful mount of the internal MD yet still no boot:

Probing /dev/mtdblock0
Probing /dev/mtdblock1
Probing /dev/mtdblock2
found /dev/mtdblock2 (jffs2)
mount successful
/dev/mtdblock2 no kernel found, unmounting
Probing /dev/mtdblock3
Probing /dev/hda
Probing /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc: No such file or directory
Probing /dev/hdc1
/dev/hd1: No such file or directory
Probing /dev/hdc2
/dev/hdc2: No such file or directory
No bootable device found

Btw I never get the menu.

Anyone have any ideas waht si going wrong. I have tried two different CF cards. Also I have tried Using only Cortex 8.04 guide/files and using these files in this thread. Same result.

BerndS: i don't have acces to a 760,
but from command line, does the ts_calibrate program work?
if not:
1) do a grep -i handlers /proc/bus/input/devices
and check the second line starting with a "H: Handlers="
2) then grep TS ~/.profile
this line should have the same event* as the previous command
if it's not the same, nano ~/.profile and change the TSLIB_TSDEVICE line and specify the proper device
3) then logout, login, and run ts_calibrate again
4) if it doesn't work, try editing /etc/ts.conf and uncomment (remove the #) at the line module_raw corgi and run ts_calibrate again

bobey: you need to extract two files, with a z 3000
1) the kernel an modules: http://www.zaurus.org.uk/cortez/ubuntu/dow...addition.tar.gz (http://www.zaurus.org.uk/cortez/ubuntu/download/zubuntu/spitz/spitz-root-addition.tar.gz)
2) and the desired rootfs

I think "apt-get dist-upgrade" would be a better upgrade option than"apt-get upgrade," but I'm not entirely sure.

Hi,

>>BerndS: i don't have acces to a 760,
>>but from command line, does the ts_calibrate program work?

No, it fails with

ts_open: No such file or directory

>>if not:
>>1) do a grep -i handlers /proc/bus/input/devices

H: Handlers=kbd event0 apm-power
H: Handlers=event1

>>and check the second line starting with a "H: Handlers="

   export TSLIB_TSDEVICE=/dev/input/event2

>>2) then grep TS ~/.profile
>>this line should have the same event* as the previous command
>>if it's not the same, nano ~/.profile and change the TSLIB_TSDEVICE line and specify the proper device

changed to

   export TSLIB_TSDEVICE=/dev/input/event1

>>3) then logout, login, and run ts_calibrate again

works

Restarted X and now the Stylus works in X!

But the keyboard still does not work while X is running (excpet CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) ...

>>4) if it doesn't work, try editing /etc/ts.conf and uncomment (remove the #) at the line module_raw corgi and run ts_calibrate again

Tested this also:

ts_calibrate
xres = 640, yres = 400
ts_read: Invalid argument

One other (very) minor issue:

After the installation the GUI started in Portrait mode. Therefor I removed the line

xrandr -o right

from the .xinitrc file . Now the GUI starts correctly in Landscape mode (hopefully I did not mix the Portrait/Landscape here ..)

The boot messages are also correct but the initial graphical Ubunutu logo is still in the wrong mode -- can this be corrected?

Thanks

Bernd

BerndS: edit /etc/ts.conf and comment (add the #) at the line module_raw corgi, this step was just in case the previous steps haven't worked.

if C+Alt+S works, the keyb is up under X? seems wrong keymap loaded in (.xinitrc)
the line test -f uses the reply of the grep Hardware /proc/cpuinfo, try hardcoding it (replace $HARDWARE with one given by ls /etc/X11/kb/) try different options or comment this line.

About boot splash, edit /etc/defaults/psplash and remove -a 270 but it will look weird

Capn_Fish hope everything goes as expected

EzerchE maybe you where extracting the tar.bz2 without root account, anyway, you got it
1. mouse is moving like screen rotated, mouse moving for vertical view, but i am using it horizontially.
i don't use mouse, i don't have an adapter.
2. i have linksys wcf 12 and how can i connect to wireless network
that's ubuntu basics, but start checking /etc/network/interfaces

Yeah I did that. However it doesn't work with the two cards I tried. In fact I had to take the unit apart, install the files on the MD and then insert it again into the C3000. Then the system boots. I guess there is some incompatibility with my CF cards or something. I will try with some SD cards later see if that resolves the problem. However at least I got the thing up and running now.

Seriously liking the Zubuntu.

I already did that direct after the failed test

With Akita the keyboard works; /proc/cpuinfo returns "Husky".

Done (I don't think it looks better with the -a 270)

Try MPlayer (the Angstrom version or the pdaXrom iwmmxt one will be the fastest).

How's the speed in Fennec? I've only tried Arora and Midori (Arora is faster, BTW).

I am keen to compile mplayer - but I can't seem to find suitable source - Angstrom is particularily hard to find the source - I can see the git tree but not sure how to get the source.... Currently trying to compile atty's version for pdaxrom.

The standard mplayer failed miserably to compile.

Connection Manager (http://moblin.org/projects/connection-manager)
 • connman The core Connection Manager daemon (connmand) and plug-ins for Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, DHCP (udhcpc and dhclient), resolvconf, DNS proxy and PolicyKit
 • connman-gnome The GTK+-based user interfaces for an applet and a properties dialog.

Like network-manager from gnome, you have to comment all lines in /etc/network/interfaces

Custom setup:
I launch it with a shell script (connman-min) that kills the tray interface after one minute to save memory, the daemon is very lightweight.
I use stalonetray as the tray system, if you have a working tray function in your desktop, don't install stalonetray and remove the related lines in connman-min.

connman-min.tar has the .stalonetrayrc (put it in /root/ or your home directory) and the connman-min shell script (put it in /usr/bin or any binary folder)

anyone using bluez or ethernet willing to test it? i just used with wpa and works

Connman is now available in ubuntu repository using dhclient
For connman with udhcp support  download: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?s=&...st&p=181822 (https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=26434&view=findpost&p=181822) in Zubuntu Packages thread

MPlayer normally just returns. There's no GUI. Did you try running "mplayer somevideo.mpg" or just "mplayer"?

Of course I did both plus mplayer --help, mplayer -h, etc.
Same result.

I also found out that most players in Jaunty segfault or end up with an illegal instruction, including audacious, totem-xine, etc.

Btw, the upgrading way (apt-get update, apt-get upgrade/distupgrade) did not work as it left me with lots of unresolved dependencies and a cyclic dependency in libc6. So I did a fresh install. To make lxde work as before I had to replace icewm by lxde and uninstall the gdm login manager- which did not let me login as root and there had not been created a user account before.

Another issue: adduser leaves me with a user account which is not allowed to do networking as ping, nslookup, etc. all return with an error.
The new user has to be moved in a certain user group which I am actually not aware of.

Besides this jaunty looks to be a bit faster than hardy and being able to test drive fennec is worth the installation effort.

YES!!! Thank you......great link....now sound works for me and my Z (SL-C3100 "Borzoi" / Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04), too. Until yesterday evening I was not able to hear anything from the internal speaker or the headphone...nothing helped....alsamixer, sound-device and sound-modules....everything seemed to be ok...

But now it works:

1.) Download "libartsc0"-Package from Debian-armel-Repos (then install via "dpkg -i <package-name>"). In my case mplayer needs this package and it could not be found in the Debian-Multimedia- or Jaunty-Ports-Repos.

2.) Update the source.list with the Debian-Multimedia-Repos ("deb http://debian-multimedia.org (http://debian-multimedia.org) stable main")

3.) Get mencoder and mplayer via "apt-get install <package-name>"

4.) Download and install the "quasar"-package (a very great media player) from this forum. Thanks to jeana for the repacked version! And thanks to evilJazz from katastrophos.net for this great media player!

5.) Check alsamixer or alsamixergui

6.) Unmute everything and set all values to the highest level. While listening to your favourite music, bring back the settings to the right level! ;-)  TIP: As long as the master volume is set to 100%, let the internal speaker switched off!

Hope, that helps someone else.....

How can I persuade Jaunty to display german umlauts? Is there a simple way?

If yes, how can I input umlauts?
The second part is not as important to me as the first part. I want to use org-mode for emacs on the Z,
but it has to display my text files correctly, else it is unusable for me, what would be a pity.

Thx in advance!

found out that the hard way as well.

Now get wifi going (which doesn't seem to be that "basic ubuntu"). When inserting my cards, dmesg reports nothing.
What am I missing here ?
Already tried the interfaces file from Angstrom and the Angstrom kernel.
Also tried manually loading spectrum_cs, but still nothing in dmesg.
pccardctl shows nothing.

Having fun anyway,

Thanks, that makes the cf-slot alive.
Now figure out the rest.

Edit : that was easy, copy the interfaces file over from Angstrom, plug in the card and all is up and running.

Have fun,

Just tested it for wifi and its working nicely here too.
I just ran connman-applet from the run box of lxde for testing purposes.
I'm having all sorts of problems with bluetooth though, according to what I have read bluetooth connections seem to require having been set up in bluez before connman can work with them, and the problem there is how to get pairing working with the new bluez stack.

I cant get bluetooth-wizard to run due to dbus problems:

Connman is now available in ubuntu repository using dhclient
For connman with udhcp support  download: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?s=&...st&p=181822 (https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=26434&view=findpost&p=181822) in Zubuntu Packages thread

"Can't get session bus: failed execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session"

well, i could not setup a bluez connection using connman either, i read that bluez changed its standards so connman lost compatibility with bluez. i think it's better to wait for the connman version 0.13

NOTE: i have no experience using bluetooth, but i could setup bluetooth connection in my ubuntu desktop (not zaurus) using bluetooth-applet and haven't played with it, just to test it

you need to upgrade dbus.

in order to get Bluetooth to work,

i installed gnome-bluetooth, bluez-gnome, and upgraded dbus.

run bluetooth-applet then rfcomm connect, you will then get a pairing request.
Really stupid as hcitool auth didn't do a thing. Also make sure that hciconfig auth is enabled.

i was unable to get Dun working with wvdial, but Pon works and without any init scrips!

now all i need is to find a way to automate hciattach. supposedly bluez-pcmcia-support is supposed to do this, but i haven't had any luck yet.

Hi all,

I upgraded my RC1 to Jaunty as described in this thread and everything seemed to go smoothly.  However when I rebooted I was asked for a password, for the root account, which I do not know/have not defined.

Any ideas how to get around this?

if your have ubuntu on an sd, boot a ubuntu live cd and mount the sd , then edit (as root) the /media/sd-path/etc/shadow

Hi same,

Just like you said the shadow file needed editing after being replaced in the upgrade, maybe there should be a warning to set a password for root, or maybe I should treat my C860 with the respect it deserves and implement some security!

Many thanks,

I installed Zubuntu v1 but it is slow with LXDE, so I tried this filesystem. IceWM is great, very fast! Now I will play with it, gotta set up wifi.

Update:

OK, got wifi working.

Packages Working:
sqlite3 & sqlitebrowser
zim
xournal
file-roller
rgbpaint
wavemon
abiword
gnumeric
homebank
aqualung (could not get mplayer, this one works great)
system-info
zsafe
fbreader
evince
gnome-dictionary
gnome-terminal
gnome-log-viewer
gnome-games
zenity
dillo (midori was kinda slow)
units
imagemagick
joe
sc
weather-util

Problems
Kdepimpi: runs, but kapi complains about not finding the libraries (which I moved from /opt/kdepimpi to /usr/lib, following cortez's instructions), kopi could import ics file but kapi cannot import vcf file (complains about not having resource)
Several packages using python-gtk, complaining that they cannot import gtk, gobject modules or other... (gnome-sudoku, glchess, wifi radar, etc.)
Fltk-sudoku: cannot resize the window.

Zubuntu is great! It IS making me forget Cacko!

I am confirming that.
LXDE is not much slow but it has nasty bug and after resume takes a lot of cpu. The longer suspend the longer wake-up cpu-fill-up.

After changing to matchbox problem ends.

Post by: danboid on March 16, 2010, 01:10:58 pm
I've read numerous threads in the oesf (z)ubuntu forum and by the sounds of things, zubuntu jaunty sounds like the best OS available for my c3000 seeing as many have complained of Karmic being significantly slower and there being problems with updating and installing new packages thanks to libc6 and many things being compiled for a newer ARM arch than our Z's.

I have yet to try installing the regular zubuntu 1.0 rc1 then updating it to jaunty as described in the first post of this thread but I expect I'm going to have the same problem I'm having with both zubuntu 2.0 and the jaunty tarball linked in post #1 here, and that is that booting both the jaunty tarball and 2.0 only gets as far as

Warning: unable to open an initial console

I have looked within /dev under both 2.0 and this tarball and it is suspiciously bare with only a few entries so I did as suggested in the zubuntu 2.0 thread and ran

MAKEDEV console

Within the /dev dir (when booted via D+B ) and that did create a number of extra console devices but also complained of awk being missing and something about corgi something being missing too so maybe the command didn't fully, properly execute and make every device required?

Another thing that could be a problem is my fstab as post #1 says I need to edit it but it doesn't say how- I've looked at fstab and it says I shouldn't really change / as that gets pivoted anyway- I have installed the zubuntu rootfs's to hda1 which is my microdrive. I have a swap partition as hda2 and that is setup correctly in fstab already.

Maybe I'm installing it incorrectly? I've been guessing a few things seeing as cortezs' guide presumes you want to install to a CF or SD card but I want zubuntu as my sole OS on my microdrive so I've been booting into the D+B console, formatting hda1 with

mke2fs -j -L zubuntu /dev/hda1

Then I mount my CF card with the zubuntu tarball on it and extract it to hda1 followed by the spitz additions tarball- I had to use my desktop Linux box to convert the jaunty tarball into a .tar.gz as the busybox tar doesn't support bzip2 compressed files. kexec seems to be fine as of course I'm getting that menu.

Finally, can I use the spitz-root-addition-v2.0.tar.gz kernel and modules with zubuntu jaunty? I have already tried that but I just get the 'Warning: unable to open an initial console' error as with the other combinations.

cd /
umount /cf /hdd1
reboot

I had to use my desktop Linux box to convert the jaunty tarball into a .tar.gz as the tar version included in my c3000 D+B NAND doesn't support uncompressing bzip2 compressed files. kexec seems to be fine of course as at least I'm getting that menu OK.

Finally, can I use the spitz-root-addition-v2.0.tar.gz kernel and modules with zubuntu jaunty? I have already tried that but I just get the 'Warning: unable to open an initial console' error as with the other combinations.

I have tried to install this jaunty zubuntu tarball a few times now with both spitz-root-addition.tar.gz and spitz-root-addition-v2.0.tar.gz only to get the same 'unable to open initial console' error. I've just updated my previous post as my tar command was incorrect as I have been extracting both my tar.gz files with 'tar xpzvf', I just don't normally bother to include the 'p', but that is specified in the OP's instructions so thats what I've be trying.

Its also important to mention that 'fsck -fcp /dev/hda1' returns no errors, I have checked the md5sum of zubuntu-desktop-jaunty-rootfs_feb.2009-rev-armel.tar.bz2  is OK and that when I extracted zubuntu-desktop-jaunty-rootfs_feb.2009-rev-armel.tar.bz2 on my PC I did so as root using a command beginning 'tar xpvjf' and when I re-tarred the contents (again on my PC) I did so as root with 'tar cpvf' - they should do it right?

I'd like to hear from anyone who has successfully installed zubuntu-desktop-jaunty-rootfs_feb.2009-rev-armel.tar.bz2 on a c3000 without either having to have an existing OS installed on the MD or having to physically remove the MD and copy stuff over that way. Did you have to alter /etc/fstab and if so how? I am starting to wonder if I'm having probs due to a bug within Lineo uLinux's kernel or its busybox/tar/mk2efs or some other software of my NAND I'm using here? I think the install tools used for pdaXii13 etc. are a bit newer (if still old) than the versions integrated in the c3000 NAND/ D+B menu (Lineo). I have also tried to install zubuntu by booting the pdaXii13 5.4.9 installer off an SD card the choosing the command option but unlike Lineo it doesn't register cards inserted into the CF slot nor USB memory sticks.

I have yet to try installing using the original zubuntu 1.0RC rootfs so thats my next thing to try..

EDIT

I have now tried following my install procedure detailed in my last post with zubuntu-desktop-rc1.tar.gz and spitz-root-addition.tar.gz yet I'm still just getting the same ol' 'unable to open initial console' warning so now I presume my install method is not an option ie you have to have a full c3000 Zaurus OS installed somewhere and available to boot into to install zubuntu onto your MD or you have to remove you MD and stick it directly into your PC's CF slot OR do I just need a certain fstab entry/adjustment to get zubuntu to boot?

Whoah!

I now now have Jaunty booting on my c3000 using zubuntu-desktop-jaunty-rootfs_feb.2009-rev-armel.tar.bz2 which I installed using the D+B emergency boot method described above albeit with a few small additional steps I'm just about to detail- sorry for not searching this forum first as my question had been answered but my trial and error could've been avoided if post #1 of this thread gave fuller instructions and/or cortez fleshed out his install guide for zubuntu with the things that tripped me up. I found the necessary mknod commands buried in a thread on this forum- apparently they were found in some comments on the omegamoon site but I never saw them. I've not got to properly play with it yet but first impressions are very, very good! I know zubuntu has been around for a year or so now (I was Z'less when it got released) but it seems a shame to me that this should happen so late to the life of the Spitz- after manufacturing of the Zaurus had stopped no less as this is the Linux experience I wanted 'out-of-the-box' when I first got my hands on a Z. Shame on you Sharp and big thanks to Cortez, same, kexec/ Angstrom devs, Ubuntu community and everyone who did help bring Ubuntu to the Z!

Previously, the best 'desktop Linux' distro I'd had working on my spitz was pdaXii13, which feels like computing in treacle compared to zubuntu. An unmodified pdaXii13v2 (5.5.0a) takes just under 3m 30s to boot to X from power on- zubuntu takes about 55s which is honestly as good a boot time as booting Jaunty (with GNOME, though) on my Core 2 Duo laptop, which also takes just about 1m to boot from grub. pdaXii13 consumes pretty much every K of your RAM and after booting to X as you have less than 3MB RAM free whereas zubuntu leaves you a whopping (in comparison) 25MB RAM to play with after loading X and rxvt! Obviously this makes a massive difference to general performance and load times.

I have got zubuntu jaunty to boot using spitz-root-addition-v2.0.tar.gz although it creates more errors at boot time and X isn't guaranteed to work either- it won't start more often than not (complains of an Xinput Extension problem of some sort) so you want to stick with the spitz-root-addition.tar.gz used with 1.0RC for use with  zubuntu-desktop-jaunty-rootfs_feb.2009-rev-armel.tar.bz2 .

I think my 'unable to open initial console error' is only experienced by those installing zubuntu onto internal CF/ Microdrive, so if you are doing so then after having done 'tar xpzvf /cf/spitz-root-addition.tar.gz -C /hdd1' you need to do:

Code: [Select]
cd /hdd1/dev
mknod -m 660 console c 5 1
mknod -m 660 null c 1 3
mknod -m 660 rtc c 10 135

Before unmounting the drives and rebooting.

When you boot for the first time, zubuntu will only get as far as its fake 'Loading' splash screen and X will fail to load- you need to disable the fake splash which you do by pushing CTRL+ALT (button just to the right of Ctrl) + 2 once drive activity has ceased to switch to the second virtual terminal. Login as root then type:

nano /boot/kernel-cmdline

and change psplash's value to 'false'. Save (CTRL+O), quit (CTRL+X), reboot and enjoy!

PS Cortez and OP - I'd appreciate it if you could update your install guides with this info so no-one else has to loose multiple days searching and experimenting to get off the ground with zubuntu - thanks!

Hi all....

I know it has been about 4 years since last post, but just in case anyone is still around.....

I just tried download link for the tarball in first post...but the download is no longer there....no big surprise, given the length of time...

Does anyone have this tarball and can provide a link to get it?

Want to try it on my 3200.....

Meanwhile, just tried using apt-get and I get error messages about not able to resolve 'repository.handhelds.org'.....assume that repo is no longer working?....

Any other options?

Thanks!

Hi,

To clarify....

Omegamoon has different versions available than the that was linked in first post here.

I have tried both of Omegamoons and they each have issues.

V1.0 has no working repo and V2.0 has suspend problem that locks up Zaurus and can't wake it up. This is why I wanted to try version from this thread, based upon Ubuntu 9.04.

Hope this is clear now.

Hi ArchiMark,
Have you been successful with installing Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 Armel in this thread?
I tried it with varying results. I have tried 2 different installs.
I already have the multiboot kernel installed and working.

1. I followed instructions in first post exactly, except instead of downloading spitz-root-addition.tar.gz from omegamoon, I used one I have from back when cortez posted it.  I have 2 versions with the same name. One dated 12-25-2008, and the other dated 12-29-2008.
I used the later one.
This setup results in attempting to boot ubuntu, but it gets stuck at loading the SD card.
"waiting for root device /dev/mmcblk0p1" It just hangs there. I have waited for about 10-15 minutes.

2. This is my second attempt.
I decided to look at cortez's  Zubuntu version 2.0 released for Spitz.
I have all these stored on my hard drive on my desktop PC and elsewhere.
When I looked in the folder, I found a different version of spitz-root-addition.tar.gz.
It is named "spitz-root-addition-v2.0.tar.gz"
This is when I decided to try installing Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 Armel again.
I formatted the SD card to ext3 before I tried this.
I installed Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 Armel and spitz-root-addition-v2.0.tar.gz
This resulted in a different boot into ubuntu.
It booted to the desktop (with a whole lot of errors in the console before X started).
The curser jumps from the center of the screen to down and left. The desktop and menu are frozen. I tried a USB mouse and that didn't work.
I can Ctrl+Alt+Bkspce out of X and read the errors in the console.
One of the last errors tslib, something to do with the touchscreen. I don't have it booted now and I'll try again later.

It's nice to see people are still posting here, and I may add, I haven't seen any smartphone that has a quality keyboard and all the stuff our Zaurii have.

Edit: A day later I tried a different Sandisk 2GB SD card, and I also downloaded spitz-root-addition.tar.gz from cortez's site linked in first post, just to be sure I wasn't using a wrong root-addition.
It boots now and no longer hangs up at "waiting for root device /dev/mmcblk0p1"
But the desktop is frozen solid and nothing seems to work. I can ctrl-alt-backspace to exit X.
It looks like my 2nd example above. At least I know I have a good SD card and the correct root-addition.
That's all the further I have gotten so far....

Yay! I got it working. I'm now able to calibrate the touchscreen and stylus input works on my SL-C3100!
I changed some settings as shown below.
I'm not sure if in all three places these settings were all matched to '1' or one of them was originally set at '2' But I managed to set them all to '1' and that is what got my touchscreen working, and a functional desktop.

at my c1000 its not nessesary to kill tskeys
its sufficient to edit /etc/zaurusd/mach-config-vars and put TSKEYS_DEVICE=/dev/input/event2 instead default value

Hi ArchiMark,
Have you been successful with installing Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 Armel in this thread?
I tried it with varying results. I have tried 2 different installs.
I already have the multiboot kernel installed and working.

[ Snip.........]

Great news, Jon!

And thanks for sharing all the details....will come in handy if I get time to try this (see my reply post above just above this one...).

Will be very interested to know what you can do this version....ie, can you use a decent web browser and other apps, etc.....

Thanks,

Mark

Hi again ArchiMark, and anyone else that reads this.
I finally got WiFi and other tweaks working, but....
The feeds are gone now. I really need to acquire wifi-radar or wicd.
I have old copies of these, but the python dependencies are making these old packages fail to install.
There are no packages to be downloaded from the feeds that I can tell. I even looked for network-manager, and it is not available. I always forget commandline stuff. I guess I need to print a small howto to get connected whenever I restart my Zubuntu Z.

Did you set your /etc/apt/sources.list like suggested in above post?

I just looked at this url using firefox.
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dist...n/binary-armel/ (http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/main/binary-armel/)
There is only a "Packages" file. It is just a text description of all the packages, but I don't see any packages there.
A week ago, I think I tried this repository in zubuntu 9.04 and it didn't work.
I'll have to get the multiboot kernel re-installed and try again. I reflashed my Z for reasons stated below.

I tried 3 different methods to get Cacko to run from NAND using the multiboot kernel and only one method worked for me.

1. At first, I used this method here: https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=26759 (https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=26759) post #2
The command in that post only worked once for me and I had the wrong kernel-cmdline.
When I tried to replace it, I couldn't access the /boot/ directory. I kept getting message that it was readonly
Next, I had to use a command in meanie's big pdf to mount the root partition as rw.
I still couldn't get Cacko to boot using the multiboot kernel, except eith the next method. method 2.

2. This method is to have the Cacko kernel, kernel-cmdline, and image.nfo on an SD card and that will boot Cacko.
(when I had the multiboot kernel installed). Using this method, you need to swap SD cards to boot Cacko or zubuntu.

3. It's been a week and I don't recall the 3rd method I tried to get Cacko to boot from NAND and zubuntu on the SD card

A week ago, I was trying to get Cacko to boot and used a "cackofix" to make Cacko run independently of my microdrive
That messed up my original Cacko install.
I restored my Z with Trisoft NAND and then re-installed Cacko. I haven't installed any of the newer kernels for Cacko yet.
I need to get back to this before I forget what all I did.
Here's 2 other threads showing methods to get Cacko to boot from NAND and have zubuntu on SD/CF
