Title: Openzaurus.org Domain Expired
Post by: YoG on April 29, 2009, 02:53:45 am
Hi,

I wanted to reflash OZ yesterday and I found out that OpenZaurus.org (http://openzaurus.org/) domain expired. I eventually found the hentges mirror (http://mirror.hentges.net/www.openzaurus.org/) and was able to install from there...
Is there another way to connect to the openzaurus website?

Thanks,

The OpenZaurus project is dead and has been replaced by OpenEmbedded/Angstrom.

first, thanks for the quick reply...
second, well... at the moment the Angstom project is not mature enough to replace it since for two weeks no I've been trying to find a simple way to install it and didn't find... whereas after 5 minutes search I could reflash the dead openzaurus... moreover my experience with the 2007.12 and 2008.1 was awful.

it would be a shame to see that project vanish from the net...

yes, just as OZ reached a state of maturity and relative completeness they decided to create an even more ambitious distro supporting even more platforms. This was strange idea since they seemed to barely have enough people to keep OZ going.

however, Angstrom has been very useful - the 2.6 kernel for Arm has been invaluable, and *if* you can get a stable build, it's actually not too bad. There's an automated build tool which, in theory, allows you to create a complete installable from scratch on Koen's website

I tried that (here is the online image builder (http://amethyst.openembedded.net/~koen/narcissus/)). But I don't know how to use that... what packages to choose... what is the base system... and after randomly choosing packages I get a rootfs.tar.bz2 file... but I don't know hot to continue from here...
I miss the ease of use of OZ...

after you've got the rootfs, you simply take that, along with the kernel and installer programs and gnutar and put them, with the right names onto a flash card and do the power-on/OK installation procedure.

That sounds pretty easy...   where do I find the kernel, installer and gnutar? what are the right names? is there a chance that i'll brick my zaurus if I get it wrong?

thanks for your patience
