Hi all-
Stoopid permissions question I\'m sure, but can\'t figure it out.
I\'m trying to make some small changes to my .profile file, and passwd file (change over to the bash shell), but I do not have write permissions. I\'m using vi (also tried AdvTextEdit), but I get write errors as I do not have permission to save my changes.
Do I need to explicitly login as root when using terminal? Or do I need to chown or chmod the files first?
Thanks,
bMindful

In the SL5500 3.x ROMs you run as the \'zaurus\' user, which doesn\'t have admin permissions. So when you start the terminal, you are logged in as \'zaurus\'. Hence to edit /etc/passwd you must switch to the \'root\' user by running the command
su
If it asks for a password, it is the same as your passcode that you set in the Security app.
As for the .profile and .bashrc files, which ones are you trying to change? The ones under /home/root or /home/zaurus? Since you\'re now running as \'zaurus\' by default you will be using the ones under /home/zaurus which you should be able to edit, if they already exist, or create without any problems.
You cannot edit the files under /home/root as the \'zaurus\' user. You must switch to the root user to do that.

Does the 3.10 Q desktop no longer support the execute as root checkbox? When I check it off, it doesn\'t seem to hold the check or execute as root.

This was buggy in v3.10. Try flashing to 3.13 from http://community.zaurus.com/projects/sl5500uss (http://community.zaurus.com/projects/sl5500uss)
