I would like to set up a Samba share on my 5500 (running OZ 3.3.5). I thought I would need to follow the instructions in the \"Samba over non-USB\" HOWTO (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=Samba%20over%20non-USB), but it begins by asking me to change to /etc/rc.d/init.d/, which doesn\'t exist. (There are directories called /etc/rc0.d, /etc/rc1.d and so on.)
A \"ps aux\" shows that smbd isn\'t running on my Z. The FAQ on the OZ site doesn\'t contain any references to Samba at all (AFAICS), and a Google search turned up next to nothing in terms of a Samba/OZ HOWTO. How have other OZ users got Samba working?
Many thanks,
Tim

Try /etc/init.d rather than /etc/rc.d/init.d/

I should\'ve thought of that
I looked in /etc/init.d/, but there was no file called \"samba\" there. I wanted to use \"locate\" to look for the file if it exists, but the command doesn\'t seem to be present, at least in the shell I\'m using here (the default - ash?).
Could it be that Samba isn\'t installed, and I have to pick up the package(s) from somewhere?
Thanks for your help,
Tim

Yes, samba doesn\'t come installed by default on the OZ ROMs, so you\'ll have to install it.

It\'s in the OZ feed (for your particular ROM flavour)

Thanks a bunch - I\'ll try the feed this evening

I couldn\'t find a Samba package on the OZ \"stable\" feed (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/stable/feed/ (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/stable/feed/) the other two feeds don\'t seem to work right now), but downloaded the package linked to from the ZSI (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/). Hope this one works with OZ...
Thanks again,
Tim.

What about the feed for your ROM?
http://www.openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/c...l-strongarm.ipk (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/collie/ipks/samba_2.2.8a-2_armv4l-strongarm.ipk)
You\'ll (probably) also need samba-common from the same loc.

I must have missed that feed - I was on the OZ site\'s download page for 3.3.5 (http://www.openzaurus.org/oz_website/content/download?release_id=8), and scrolled down to the three feeds at the bottom of the page (two of which weren\'t working).
Anyway, I\'m putting this feed in the package manager for later. Thanks again for your continuing help - I think I\'m gradually getting there

I have been trying to get samba to work flawlessly with 3.3.6-pre1 on a 5600 without any luck. I was first able to get past the usb hotplug problem, although it takes an occasional reboot in the cradle to reset itself. I have been able to mount shares from my linux box to my zaurus using the smbclient. When I do so, it spits out errors complaining that codepages do not exist in /user/... I have not been able to get the samba_2.2.8a-2_armv4l-strongarm.ipk (I am assuming this is the server package) package to install on my system. It complains about needing samba-common installed first. However, when I install samba-common first the package manager tells me to move a number of files out of the way (/etc/samba/samba.conf, etc). By the way, I have been using the ipks from the 3.3.6-pre1 feed (http://openzaurus.org/official/experimental/poodle/3.3.6-pre1/). Has anyone made any progress with samba on a 5600? Maybe I am doing something wrong?

Use --force-overwrite or similar with ipkg

I went ahead and installed samba using the --force-overwrite option. It is now installed. I no longer get a bus error when loading smbd. However, when I run ps aux it does not show that smbd is running. Has anyone got samba server to work on the 3.3.6-pre1 to work on a 5600? If so what packages did you use?
Thanks...

Did you reboot or run /etc/init.d/samba start (I think that path is right)?

I went ahead and uninstalled samba, then reintstalled it using the package manager. It did not complain about the files being in the way this time. Now everything is working. Thanks for the pointers lardman...
