Title: sl-6000
Post by: Anonymous on March 28, 2004, 03:02:13 pm
I have had my sl-6000 for about a week an dI love it. I am a member but I can\'t post my name right now because It would break company rules for the sl-6000.I wrote awhile ago about having company contacts at sharp but my post never made it on the board. Anyway, the usb port is a 5pin mini-a and the docking por is a 5pin mini-b very cloes but not the same. I had an extra mini-b and shaved it to fit and know I can get a read out of what is connected to my Z. So v8esprit if you do this and look in system info iunder device usb it will tell you what device you are using.I think drivers have to be written for the device to work.I will write Mickeyl,Tumus,Lardman,Offroadgeek,Foxdie, andTaim,to give them more info. P.S. Taim how\'s Pitt\'s ZUG doing....I used to live there.ME

Which 6000 model do you have, just out of curiousity?  BTW, USB-A to mini-A adapters should be available at any electronic store.

I have the sl-6000L and I\'m posting from it right now. The mini-a aren\'t to hard to find just not to popular. MicroCenter has the gold for $30.00 or so. also connect my mini hub to it and it can see and use it.It sees my SL-5500,Ipaq(familiar) anddigital cam as mass storage. I\'m more of a hardware guy with some progamming exp.but I\'ll hook everything and it\'s mother to my Z before I\'m done. Me again.....

Is the software, PIMs et al. much better than the SL-5500 (I\'m assuming if you got the SL-6000 that you have kept your 5500 ROM up to date).

They seem to have improved alot with more intergration of other apps such as having word docs. as schedules for meetings and pictures in pims. Overall I think it was well worth it with no wifi card hanging out.my next step is a good gsm/gprs card and a high meg SD card. After that it will be the ultimate mobile tool. ME again

The Sl-6000 runs ALOT of the 5500 software and OZ for sharp looks great on it.It also has a feature to let you have a magnified view of the screen when using any of the apps,pims,ect...but there is a couple seconds of load time.

Hi \"me again\" did the install of OZ on your 6000 go ok ? About what size cf card would I need to put it on ? I\'m completely new to zauri (but a semi-seasoned linux hacker). How do you get to the command terminal with the stock sharp rom ? I really want to install apps that I generally use on linux at home, like xmms, and so on.

Can you transfer data back and forth from a mass storage device or does the 6000 need drivers?  What happends when you plug in a USB keyboard? Sorry we are bugging you so much, we just want to know!

Also when is the official release of the 6000 to the US? Sharp still acts like it does not exist.

Its officially released - March 31st. Of course by official it means the media can start reporting on it (see Brighthand.com, BargainPDA and even on Slashdot).

Amazon and PCConnection are listing as Available now, so that\'s official.
Sharp\'s website of course is a different thing totally.

I have a SL-5600 and was thinking of upgrading ASAP but am not a little cold on that idea.  The primary purpose was to integrate all the PIM stuff while also being able to ditch my notepad.  I was able to do that with my Newton (don\'t kill me ) because graffiti add on could recognize and push data as fast as I could write with VERY high accuracy.  The SL-5x is slow and even after training it Graffiti strokes it sucks as recognition.

Has any of this improved?  Because the processor is the same is the recognition software optimized any better.  While in meetings, I can\'t dork with the tiny keyboard and would prefer not to carry an external keyboard.

Inwaiting, Idid\'t install OZ yet but I did install the OZ for sharp rom apps and they work great. Also the terminal for sharp comes with the CD but I opted to use Konsole becausemit has more featues. Metal9966, I\'m currently working  on getting the data transfer thing worked out because the Z can see it as mass storage just as it can use my hud and see my kensungton usb camera so it could be simpleor a driver thing. Claborne, In my opinion Sharp did a better job with the hand recog. softwar and It\'s worh the small investment. Just think, you can sell your 5600 and your wifi cards while they\'re still hot cause when people start buying 6000s the 5600 might get cheap like the 5500. But I\'m going to keep mine. PS I\'m posting from my 6000

Hi \" me again \"
Thanks for the info re xmms, got all the libs and deps figured out now. One thing though ... it only runs from the command line. Trying to run it from qt hangs for a while (\"please wait ...\" ) then exits. Any ideas on this ? I looked at the qt icon props and could not really see anything to change.
On another note, for this machine, would you recommend oz or xrom ? I\'m really looking to put a small linux distro on there, but must admit, like the MSoft compatability for things like sheet and word, as they come out of the box. I\'m just concerned about reverting back in case I change my mind, and the sharp rom is nowhere posted. Is there a way to back up the vanilla rom from the unit itself ?
And on another note, anyone know where to start if attempting to port palm code over to a \"TBD\" linux rom ? There\'s an app I\'d like to port (called easycalc).

Thats awsome! Was it a hard drive, or like a USB flash card reader? Also did the Z automount it, or did you have to mount in terminal? Thanks.
