I\'ve successfully installed 336pre on a 5600. OpieMedia player even works! Whoa! The whole process is not without pitfalls, and false starts.
This is a mini howto for newbies to the OZ.
Here is what I have learned.
1) remove alot of crap
BEFORE I did the upgrade I rm -rf alot in /opt and /usr/ and /lib ... I did this because I wanted the OZ filesystem to start anew without leftovers getting in the way.
# cd /opt
# rm -rf *
just dont delete your stuff on your cf or sd cards!!
2) Install OZ 336pre exactly as is stated in the howto. Keep in mind that for the 5600 a \"reset\" is opening up the battery plate, waiting 5 seconds or so, pressing the reset button, closing the battery hatch, switching up the little switch, and then concurrently pressing the \"cancel\" and \"ok\" keys on the front. This brings you into the Maintenance menu. Selecting Cancel at this point is effectively reseting the box without doing anything.
3) Someone mentioned previously after the install to forget about setting the time. I agree. You want to get into Konsole as quickly as you can to do the
#echo 1 ] /proc/sys/kernel/printk
... then fix the time.
4) After that you will notice how nicely OZ looks and works! However you maybe quick to be dismayed by the fact that there are a ton of packages already installed taking up space on /mnt/root ... Simply installing one package at this point could easily BREAK the package install program as it wont be able to write to its status file.
5) so... uninstall some stuff carefully. I chose to do one package at a time just to be carefull.
6) To get OpieMediaPlayer going install the skin first... then the player.
... to be continued...

Terrific Suchs! Thanks very much for the contribution. I\'m awaiting Part 2 with baited breath.
-
quick question: as i understand it, one uninstalls a package by typing: \"ipkg uninstall package-name\", but how do i know the package name, if i did not do the \"ipkg install package-name\" in the first place?
thanks!
-
You can look into /usr/lib/ipkg/status
-
After installing opie media player, did you find that it could play files well? I tried watching some mpg Id encoded which worked fine with the sharp player, but they omp couldnt handle them.

ipkg status
shows a list of installed packages (along with version numbers and where it was installed)

Hybrid you are unfortunately correct. The darn opiemedia player is just plain broke. dang!!!!
When I made the original post I didnt bother to actually carefully listen to the Mp3s I had on my sd card ... I heard the songs play and figured viola!
ehhhhh wrong!!!! sorry.
Looks like I will have to try xmms ...
or its back to zynergy
-
well at least its good to know its not just me
-
Odd, I was able to get opiemediaplayer to work with mp3, mpeg, ogg and even avi... but my Oz install was just eating up all my resources and I didn\'t know about the trick for the screen-fix. I quickly chose the tckRom.
I would love for a version of Oz to actually work with the 5600...
-
How about a way to install OZ via SD card onto the 5600? =)
-
I know... many wishes and suggestions... few developers. ;-)
We have news though... I hope to get an updated OOO newsletter out next week.

Actually, I am running OZ 3.3.6pre1 on my Zaurus 5600. I am using it as a security tool and all the apps that I need run fine. The only items I have left to work on is VNC server and the USB sync issue. Other than that I have the following items installed:
SafeDee 2.0.1
dig 9.2.1
hotplug 2002_08_26-8
hping2 2.0
kismet feb.04.01-1
kismet_qt 2.0.0
libglib1.2 (Had to uninstall libglib1 to make nmap work)
libpcap0 0.7.2-1
nemesis 1.32-5
nmap 3.50-1
nmapfe 1.0-1
opera6 1.5.4
opie-wellenreiter 1.0.2-20031219
opie-sh 0.5
oz-compat 0.5 ***very important
qtrdesktop 1.2.0
tabmanager 1.3
tcpdump 3.7.2-1
wlanmon 1.7.0
zethereal 1.0
Everything works beautifully for what I need at this time, but don\'t get too comfortable Mickey . I have high hopes for the next release of OZ
-
Wavz, I asked Mickey about the USB synch problem, and he referred me to this technique:
\"install the hotplug from oz 3.2\"
in this thread:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...=asc&highlight= (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=952&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=)
Tell me if this sorts USB synching for you.

I am guessing this is hotplug_2002_08_26-8_arm.ipk ?
-
Yes
-
Good stuff!
I followed your instructions and it works great.
Here are some more tips:
Move /opt and /home to your SD card using the tar and link technique.
then make /dev/mtdblock3 a swap partition and change /etc/fstab accordingly.
This makes the Z a LOT more responsive and lets you install as many apps as you want on root

neutre --] have u got some instructions to make /dev/mtdblock3 a swap partition?

Can I do something like that with the zaurus mtd? or is it going to wear down the memory device?
-
Whats wrong with the opie media player?
If you are having audio speed playback issues try:
If you have an Ipaq 39xx, Zaurus SL-5600 or other model which lacks ALSA support, and find that audio playback occurs at double speed, edit the following file:
/Settings/opiexine.cf
and uncomment the line:
audio.oss_sync_method:softsync
Then, after restarting mediaplayer 2, the audio should now play at the correct speed.
I got this off the net. It fixed playback for me with the zynergy ROM.

mkswap /dev/mtdblock3 - need to find the ipkg - I have seen it
then edit fstab to mount it as a swapfs
reboot =]
-
Is this the best place to get the Rom? http://dx.northern.ca/opie1.1.4/ (http://dx.northern.ca/opie1.1.4/)
-
Since this thread doesn\'t specify inorder to load OZ3.3.6pre1 you need to get the Rom here:
http://openzaurus.org/official/experimenta...dle/3.3.6-pre1/ (http://openzaurus.org/official/experimental/poodle/3.3.6-pre1/)
I loaded it lastnight, it\'s beautiful. The only problem I\'m having so far is that although my wifi card pulls an IP, I am unable to use IRC or use Opera to pull webpages. I plan on flashing my Socket wifi card today and maybe this will resolve the issue.

suchs, Hi, Base on your message of success on update the OZ 3.3.6-Pre1. I wonder are these the right file: ipks.tar, initrd.bin, zImage, and updater.sh sthat need to be copied to CF card for updatingthat you used. I mean do I need the file ipks.tar with other three file ( initrd.bin, zImage and updater.sh) in the CF card to do an update to OZ 3.3.6-pre1. Please write back to me with your convienent time.
Thanks in advance.

Hey! I am new to the zaurus world. I have some questions about installing OZ 3.3.6pre on a SL-5600. I downloaded the files and followed the instructions carefully but i'm still not getting a GUI, all I get is the console. I tried starting OZ from the console /etc/init.d/opie start but all i get is Starting Opie-login with syslog logging..... I am not sure why it is doing this but i did observe that after flashing my 5600 but before the 202 packages loaded, i got the following message modprobe: can't locate devinfo. I don't know if this is linked with my problem. Thanks for all the help.

I've tried this a hundred times with different CF cards, all to no avail.
The cards are Fat 16 like the site asks, and on the card is just 'zImage' and 'initrd.bin'.
Should there be any other files? Once I reset, all I get are the mail and battery lights flashing on and off.
I have a PXA255 model, if that makes any difference.

Just thought I'd point some people in the right direction.
http://cmisip.home.insightbb.com/zaurus.htm (http://cmisip.home.insightbb.com/zaurus.htm)
Use those instructions when installing OpenZaurus. They are what finally worked for me.
Now I gotta figure out why Konqueror won't recognize my wifi. At least I finally got it installed though.. looks and works nice

...make /dev/mtdblock3 a swap partition and change /etc/fstab accordingly.

If I understand the hardware configuration of the SL-5600 correctly, mtdblock3 is 32MB of flash memory, therefore has a limited lifespan and could therefore develop bad sectors much quicker than your standard hard drive. Wouldn't using this memory as swap space significantly decrease it's lifespan and possibly cause irreparable damage to your 5600? Unless of course you can find a repacement IC, dismantle your 5600, and happen to be really good with soldering SMT chips.
Just wondering.
I do, howver, like the idea of moving most/all of my installation to an SD card.
