Fresh xfce4 ipks on http://151.1.32.173/~fiore/pdaxrom/ (http://151.1.32.173/~fiore/pdaxrom/)
Just install and startxfce4 instead of startx.
Have fun.
EDITED: the link above should work now

Link seems dead for me:
An error occured while loading http://maredo.dyndns.org/~fiore/pdaxrom: (http://maredo.dyndns.org/~fiore/pdaxrom:)
Unknown host andrea.local
I\'m using Konqueror on Debian.
Can you not upload it somewhere? ZUG? pdaXrom\'s feed?

Try this:

Just trying this out - it looks gorgeous, and everything I\'ve tried so far seems to work, except for two issues..
Tthe Fn key doesn\'t seem to have any effect; if I press Fn H for a :, I get h.
I\'m also noticing a rather annoying sticky caps problem.. sometimes its like caps gets stuck on, and I have to hold shift to type in lowercase - is this a feature I\'m accidentally enabling somehow?
Apart from that, it is terrific
-
I think that\'s a keymap problem, as Fn seems to be mapped to ALT, and the Tab key acts both as tab and as caps lock!
Anyway I\'m looking into this.
Another thing: how do you prefer to have the panel icons arranged? I\'ve left that in this version, just did the config one, but I\'d like suggestions on this.
-
ah yes, you\'re right. I alt-tabbed once and caps lock has been turned off. Doing it again turns it back on
I haven\'t done much with the panel yet. Seems fine the way it is to me. I haven\'t yet figured out how to remove existing entries from the launcher. Do I need the utility that lets me right-click on them in order to gain access to more options?
-
yes, if you install xmonobut, it get started by default, you can find it in the top right of the screen
-
got it - works a charm So just the Fn key binding to fix now - is this a new problem in 1.0.5? Surely all the users didn\'t overlook it in 1.0.0?
-
put this at the end of /usr/local/etc/xfce4/xinitrc
xmodmap /etc/X11/kb/corgi.xmodmap
and all keys will work
I\'m also uploading the fixed ipk
-
Almost. I had to add it right under the xmonobut& line, since the panel appears to block and it never got to the end of xinitrc - but yeah, it works perfectly
Thanks for these quick fixes!

if you change the xmonobut line to be \"xmonobut -k 37&\" then you can toggle the right click by pressing the menu button.
Also. Rotation is no longer automatic when using xfce, i\'ll see if i can\'t fix that.

I\'ve uploaded some screenshots and mirrored this...

Thanks terminate, this is great

aah, cheers for -k 37 tip, thats much more convenient
Reminds me of something I did want to ask, do we have PgUp or PgDn? My efforts to get xterm to present me with a scrollbar seem fruitless - it\'s ignoring a commandline option of +sb as far as I can see, and without PgUp I have no way to scroll up

um, use aterm. its scrollbar works.

if you ssh into the Zaurus while its running XFCE. you can get it detect the rotation by doing
export DISPLAY=:0.0
then if you put the PDA in portrait mode, and run the command, chkhinge, it will detect the state of the screen and rotate it acccordingly
but sash hasnt\' told me how he is getting it to auto run that in matchbox. but i\'ll keep hacking at it. Also, I have a build of Fluxbox working, but you can\'t access the menu in it, because Tap and hold for a right click doesn\'t work anymore. and xmonobut won\'t work in Flux. but i\'ll keep working on these things

oooh, now that\'s the ticket. I saw that on your screenshot and made a mental note to look for it, and forgot. Transparency! yum. And it seems to take less memory than xterm, bonus. Cheers

Luckily I personally always use my 860 in clamshell formation, so lack of auto rotation isn\'t bothering me one iota
This is so far turning out to be pretty much the perfect rom for me - I nuked the Sharp rom within hours, then stuck with OZ until pdaX 1.0.5 came out - it was good, but the lack of working Ctrl bothered me, and it just felt a bit too restricting - Opie wanted to do everything for me. I love this. It\'s great
One thing I\'m noticing is a seeming lack of packages and dependency system. Is there any way any of us can help this grow? I found a fairly large package repo at handhelds.org, but I\'m not sure if they\'re really designed for the Zaurus, or indeed pdaXrom. If there\'s any way we can set up cross compilers and work out dependencies and make packages, I for one would be glad to help.

So i found a way to make auto-rotation work:
make a script named rotation in /usr/local/bin with the following text:
#!/bin/bash
while (true) do
sleep 2
chkhinge ]& /dev/null
done
make it executable with: chmod +x /usr/local/bin/rotation
then put this line under the xmonobut& in /usr/local/etc/xfce4/xinitrc
rotation&
I tried to make the thing work as sashz do by catching the Sys_Req keyevent and executing chkhinge, but xfwm4 doesn\'t seem to handle this in default.keys, if someone would like to try ..
-
terminate,
That rotation script works great. Is there anyway to rearrange the taskbar so xmonobut is on the left side of the screen *only* when it is rotated? The top right of the screen is the perfect place for it in landscape mode, but it is not useable while rotated.
Maybe a simpler solution would be to map xmonobut to one of the hardware \'buttons\' on the edge of the screen?
-
A solution is to go into settings ] taskbar and uncheck the \"Show system tray in taskbar\", then add a system tray into the panel. Now you have the xmonobut visible even in rotated mode. Note that you may have to make the panel \"tiny\" to see it, but it\'s there.
-
That\'s perfect, thanks for the help.
-
overall its really better than gui that comes with pdaxrom.the xffm though is a real push for the memory of zaurus. Its way too slow! and thumbs of pics take forever (in qtopia it was a real pleasure to have immediately previews but those tabs were awfully makin my zaurus remind a cell phone). So i dl\'ed gqview for pics which is fast enough.any proposal for a file manager that suits well?
Oh and video playback was much worse than in \"daniela\" rom i had.mplayer seems to b slow even out of X in the console. Is swap space the only solution?
-
try the \'mc\' (midnight commander) package from the pdaxrom feed. it is a console file manager with mouse support.
Also look at rox from that feed.
-
make it executable with: chmod +x /usr/local/bin/rotation
then put this line under the xmonobut& in /usr/local/etc/xfce4/xinitrc
How about putting the whole \'script\' in xinitrc instead:
eval "while (true) do sleep1;chkhinge >& /dev/null;done" &
I\'m thrilled to have auto-rotate and auto-display-off back.
Thanks.

of course, 4.0.5 was just made available... with many fixes, etc.
it seems that 4.2 is coming long(??) -- and this may allow for icons on the desktop, etc.

-
It doesn\'t seem to be worth upgrading, because the gtk version sashz used for the rom isn\'t 2.4.x, and the release is aimed to bring compatibility to that version..
I will make 4.2 packages as soon as this is available.
-
I have 4.0.4 at work... and I\'ll probably siwtch to it on the pda.
it\'s nice to be able to auto-hide the task bar and the bar at the bottom.
I\'m waiting/preparing for 4.2 :-]

Anyone solved thisone? when i reboot the xfce doesnt remember any values about suspend time and also backlight setting(its set to maximum). I have to run the Light&power app to make it remember it has to supsend and all. Oh! and suspending most of the times just doesnt happen. Ive seen it in another post too.I have to remove battery and all which makes me freak about the health of my pet. Thats the main reason im thinkin of switching to qtopia. Apart from these i really love xfce n with aterm\'s transparency its really unbeatable.
-
you can do that in two ways:
- get the latest ipk from my feed (first post in this topic), that includes a patched xinitrc which does the same as sashz for mb, using that my suspend works fine
- extract by yourself the lines concerning suspend and backlit from sashz xinitrc and put them in xfce xinitrc.
hope this helps

thx alot .all problems seem to b solved and im happy with pdaxrom once again
