OK after alot of checking this stuff out I found an mplayer ipk that worked on my 5500 with OZ.
The test file there played real nice so i am trying to do this encoding thing like the instructions there (http://www.zeb.uklinux.net/encoding.html (http://www.zeb.uklinux.net/encoding.html)) I am trying right now to compile mplayer on my laptop and it compiled fine by itself but then I saw on the page I got the mplayer from that you needed libavcodec so I got the file but now when I try to do \'make\' for mplayer it ends with an error related to the labavcodec files \' ad-ffmpeg: structure has no member fourcc\'
all i want to do is watch some anime avi\'s that I have... what should I do?

This is more of a question for an mplayer forum, but the mplayer source includes its own compatible libavcodec which should be enabled by default, so you don\'t need anything extra to compile mplayer with support for most formats.

I\'ve never had a problem building mplayer, which distro are you using? You may be better off grabbing binaries instead. When I used SuSE, I used to install DivX, then the Win32 codecs, then libav stuff as RPMs and lastly compile mplayer/mencoder, never a problem.

I\'m using Mandrake and I did\'nt see any binaries for it, the ones on the mdk CD would not install. But it did compile by itself it was only when I added the libavcodec folder to the mplayer folder as per the instructions that it would not compile. Seemingly a problem with the ffmpeg code compiling more specifically.
padisha_emporor: when I compile mplayer without adding the libavcodec to the directory it says at the end of configure
extra codecs not included: libavcodec
is there an easier way to modify the avi? after looking here at all the topics about it and looking every where else as well I am confused.
Oh well, I\'ll keep trying to figure it out I\'m just feeling kinda dumb right now.

I\'ve never had the problem, sorry. I haven\'t used Mandrake for a long time. But when I used SuSE in pre-installed libavcodec as an RPM, it\'s not going to work without it as far as I understand it. I\'ve had a quick look around and cannot find it for Mandrake. Sorry, maybe someone else here uses Mandrake. I\'m using Debian now and apt-get seems to have got all the dependencies I needed.

Oh, its OK. I appreciate you taking a look and I\'m sure I can figure it out eventually or find one pre-compiled. I was just getting frustrated because it seemed it should be a simple matter but it is ending up taking me over a week to get all this figured out. I have cinerella installed and I\'m thinking if I read the instructions I can do it with that.

Where do you find the test file for mplayer ?
-
What I was refering to as a test video you can get at http://www.zeb.uklinux.net/encoding.html (http://www.zeb.uklinux.net/encoding.html) its just a movie trailer at a couple different frame rates and sound types. I think its nice to have a file that is known to be playable on the Z when first trying to get video going.

I have a script that converts any mplayer playable video to ogm format. You might want to try it out. It is based initially on http://www.zeb.uklinux.net/encoding.html (http://www.zeb.uklinux.net/encoding.html). One other user however reported audio issues with video reencoded with this for the 5500. I only use it for the occasional trailer that I download off the net. I mostly use the export_ogm.pm script to convert mythtv recordings for zaurus playback.
