Cacko Kernel is an updated kernel image for Sharp ROM 3.10/3.13 and compatible ROMs.
This NOT a full ROM update, this is only a kernel. You\'ll be able to continue to use your existing ROM after you flash this kernel update.
zImage-sl5500-32-30 - default memory layout
zImage-sl5500-64-0 - memory layout for home on SD ROM (Cacko/Crow)
zImage-sl5000D-32-0 - memory layout for home on SD ROM (Cacko/Crow)
Important information regarding 64-0 and 32-0 kernels!
Such kernels are only intended to be used on top of existing 64-0( or 32-0) Cacko/Crow ROM!!! I will not work if you flash it on top of 32-30 (default) ROM.
Also, it\'s not garantied to be compatible with TKC home on SD ROM, since it uses a different approach to implement it. However a 32-30 kernel may work.
If you want to use 64-0 (32-0) configuration. you must flash one of the Cacko/Crow ROMs first, depending on your zaurus model (5500 or 5000D):
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...download&sid=65 (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=UpDownload&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=65)
Read more info on Cacko/Crow ROM here:
http://www.schwag.org/~crow/ (http://www.schwag.org/~crow/)
http://www.schwag.org/%7Ecrow/cacko/flash_...structions.html (http://www.schwag.org/%7Ecrow/cacko/flash_instructions.html)
Also note, that if you perform a ROM update (not just kernel), I cannot garantee that you backups can be safely restored. They may or may not work, depending on what changes were made to your ROM. You can try and see if they do.
You сan safely use backups if you only flashed the kernel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The kernel includes several improvments over the stock ROM.
Version 1.0:
- APM patch from OpenZaurus kernel (adopted for 2.4.18 kernel version by Albert Rybalkin).
This patch implements accurate batery power reading, which allows to display actual percentage
of remaining battery power instead of Good, Low, etc levels.
- Compiled with CONFIG_FS_SYNC flag turned off. The CONFIG_FS_SYNC flag is a modification added by Sharp
to force media (i.e., CF & SD cards) to be mounted sync, even if you specify \"mount -o async ...\".
With this flag turned off, you can get true async io on your SD and CF cards, greatly speeding up file writes
- Wireless Extentions enabled, orinoco/sectrum drivers updated to version 0.13e with monitoring patch applied.
This should enable Wellenreiter to run properly.
- Kernel is compiled with smaller console fonts, so that more information fits into the display.
- Applied patch, which fixes problem with serial CF cards staying suspended upon resume
- Included patch for IRDA problem with some Ericson mobile phones.
Issue the following commands after reboot to adjust IRDA settings for ericsson phones:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/irda/max_tx_window
echo 1000 > /proc/sys/net/irda/min_tx_turn_time
- Boot logo updated
---------------------------
Kernel Update instructions:
1. Make a backup of your data using Backup/Restore application.
Note: Although this update only replaces your Zaurus Linux kernel and does not change any other files,
you\'ll need to perform a hard reset after flashing to activate it the new kernel,
2. Download and copy zImage file to your CF card and perform a usual update procedure.
Make sure to press reset button after update is complete.
Note: Kernel is a small file so update will only take a few seconds.
3. Boot your Zaurus and restore your data from the backup.
Note:
To be able to restore your backup, rename your backup file, so that it ends with \"unknown\". For example:
2003-01-01-00-01.backup_SL5500-US-3
...should become:
2003-01-01-00-01.backup_SL5500-US-unknown
After that the Backup/Restore app should recognize this backup.
4. To get actual battery percentage displayed in Qtopia, you need an updated version of Battery Applet,
which is available for download: http://my-zaurus.nadrod.ru/opie.html (http://my-zaurus.nadrod.ru/opie.html)
Enjoy!

zImage-sl5500-64-0 - memory layout for home on SD ROM
I have attempted to update using the above kernel but when I reset all I get is the boot logo and it sits there. I am assuming that when you state \"using the usual updat procedure\" you are referring to the RESET and C+D option.
I have an SL-5500 with the zImage file copied to the root of my FC card and while it appears to flash okay, it won\'t boot into my Sharp 3.13 ROM.
Any suggestions?
-
I am assuming that when you state \"using the usual updat procedure\" you are referring to the RESET and C+D option.
@rjedge
Yes it is the same procedure. While pressing C and D keys push full reset button once, then after the flash is complete push full reset again.
@maslovsky
Your kernel works very well with read and write speeds to CF and SD cards but before I could try out my wireless and modem cards I have found that the Backup/Restore app doesn\'t work with it. I flashed back to v3.13 with Ospack and restored with backup file to checkout my files and they worked fine. So I believe there is a bug which won\'t allow for the use of Restore App.
5500 with v3.13
Thanks

I have tried this kernel update and the battery applet appears to be working fine but I also hit a problem restoring data. It appears to be unable to see backups from 3.13 rom. I have some old backups from 3.10 and it can see those to select them but so much has changed on my zaurus since then. :?

Please, make all the usual \"CF card flashing\" checks, such as your card is FAT16, zImage is the only file on the root of CF, it\'s named exactly zImage, etc.
What boot logo do you see? If ts\'s Sharp logo, kernel did not flash...
Try to flash zaurus with Ospack from Sharp and see if it works.

It was your penguin logo. Sorry I forgot to mention that I had already verified that the CF card was FAT and flashing works normally.
I did flash it back to the Sharp 3.13 OSPACK successfully. I\'ll try to flash your zImage again today.
-
Thanks maslovsky, I will try that later today when I have more time.
Out of curiosity, what does a v3.1 backup file name end with (SL5500-US-what?). I cleaned up my hard drive and don\'t have any for reference.

Hello!
well, I tried the cacko new kernel upgrade with the other part from the TKC rom 1.0 and everything works fine(even I didnt had to rename my restore file, the new kernel recognises it fine, may be because I previously used the TKC 1.0 and it is 3.10 based...)
I have a little doubt that worries me after the upgrade... well, I did it fine, and after all, when I put my Z in the craddle for charging, the yellow light start to blinking instaed of be steady (The yellow light always be steady while my Z charges with the previously TKC rom 1.0), well, after I noted thi,s I installed the battery applet 1.0.2 and the installation was well and the new applet appears on my Z,but again when I tried to charge my Z the yellow light blinks...
So, It may sound idiot, and please excuse me if it is, but really, I would like to ask... This blinking yellow light while the Z5500 is charging is normal with this new kernel????... :?: (please excuse the botther question, but, this REALLY worries me... because this light blinking is associated with troubles when appears related with charging/upgrades in other Z rom/kernels... so I wolud like to be clear if this is fine now with the new cacko kernel from april 14th....), my Z reports battery at 83% and when I put on craddle or plug directly the ac adapter it changes to 100% charge but the light still blinks...
Thanks for you help....

It ends up with the ROM version number, which is only updated properly ny the Ospack, but not inird.bin or zImage. In case of 3.1x ROM it\'s SL5500-US-3

This somtimes happens with the patehced kernel when your battery is almost full and you plug AC adapter. Try to suspend your zaurus, put it in cradle and the turn it on.

same happening here - boots with penguin, but then sits there. This is the 64-0 kernel. Is it unpacking the /home/ tar file? How long should I expect this to take?
My MMC card was already formatted to ext2, so I assume I don\'t need to fdisk and reformat...?
It\'s sitting there, having printed:
INIT: version 2.78 booting

This is exactly the situation I have using the 64-0 kernel, but now I have tried the 32-30 default kernel and it works fine.
Another thing, the link posted to the new battery applet is dead. Is there another location for this applet. The ZSI site has a protest page up so I can\'t get it from there either.

Just tried flashing the 64-0 kernel on my sl5500 with sharp 3.13. Flashes fine but after rebooting it shows the new cacko penguin logo and then hangs showing init: version 2.78 booting.
There\'s now 4 of us with this problem so clearly it doesn\'t work - will have a go with the 32-30 one and let all know the results.
-
Flashing with the 32-30 kernel worked, but I am unable to retrieve my backup. I tried renaming the original file (called \'2004-04-15-20-35\' to \'2004-04-15-20-35-unknown\' but it still can\'t find the file in the restore application.
For some reason I seem to have a different backup naming convention to the one Maslovsky mentions in his notes, 003-01-01-00-01.backup_SL5500-US-3.
I tried to put a .backup in my name but it won\'t accept \'.\' as a character.
Anyone have any ideas?

create a new empty backup, and see what suffix it gets.
check the suffix from a terminal, rather than a filemanager.
likewise do the rename from a terminal (\"mv <old> <new>\").

Hi all,
I have the same problem posted here with the 60-0 zImage. Locks the Z very hard (must perform a hard reset to get it to turn off) after about 3 second when booting the new kernel.
I have been able to flash the 32-30 with no problem.
I am intersted in having the 60-0 work with my Zaurus since I have a couple of large custom programs that could benefit from such a configuration.
My SD card has already been formatted EXT2.
Is there anyway we can work together to resolve this? any especial procedures /configurations needed before flashing?
I will appreciate any help or guidance !
Regards, Antonio

Works great, everything checks out ok!
Changing Backup file name works fine. Ambicom 56k ez-jack cf modem and SMC2642W ez-connect wireless cf cards work fine. Batteryapplet, overclock and usb-storage work, so far everything works and the card write speeds are up.
Thanks

Make that 5.... no joy with the 64-00, but the 32-30 is fine.... 64-00 locks up after the boot image - throws up running the rc.rofilesys script as far as I can tell. I run my own custom filesystem image that works with either sort of kernel and it looks like it blows up when its checking the /proc/cmdline to find out the memsize used....

As for the 64-0 kernel...
Edit:
Please follow instructions updated by maslovsky

Hi,
Tried reflashing together with w initrd.bin from the sharp 3.13 rom (rombursted) and no joy either. Same result when starting. Pinguin logo and the INIT: version 2.7.8 booting and hard lock.
Only diference is that when the flashing process ended the two leds starting flashing together. This stopped as soon as the hard reset button was pressed. Never saw this before and I have tried almost every rom out there....
What can I try next? Does anyone have the 64-0 rom working on their Zs?
Rgds, Antonio

Hi maslovsky!
Thank you very much for take the time to answer and the good will to help!!!...
The simple suspend and put in the craddle put the ligth in order, now steady and normal!
If this may help some of the other users, as a report of working, my Z5500 now appears to work fine, but I use the 30-32 rom and my Lexar SD card is formatted in VFAT (for easy access under windows and by means a card RW adapter...), and the initrd.bin of the upgrade is ProtoTKC v1.0, and the standar backup file was restored withouth rename it.
Im thinking about made a test with this new Cacko Zimage 64-0+ProtoTKC2.0+HomeOnSD script but Im not clear if there is a trouble with this combination, and I must make an effort to get the time for doing try and error work because my real work is a little charged by this days,so,if someone tried it or know see something that could make that the things dont go fine/work, well, some advice/alert will be appreciated, specially if it could save some waste of time/efforts...
best regards to everybody!

Important information regarding 64-0 kernel!
This kernel is only intended to be used on top of existing 64-0 Cacko/Crow ROM!!! I will not work if you flash it on top of 32-30 (default) ROM.
Also, it\'s not garantied to be compatible with TKC home on SD ROM, since it uses a different approach to implement it. However a 32-30 kernel may work.
If you want to use 64-0 configuration. you must flash one of the Cacko/Crow ROMs first, depending on your zaurus model (5500 or 5000D):

Well, now we know what\'s wrong!!! It can\'t be used on the stock sharp rom.
Gotta say though Maslovsky, in your initial instructions it specifically states that the new kernel would work on the sharp 3.13 rom. Guess we are all lucky that we haven\'t turned our Z\'s into fancy new paperweights.
I have the 32-30 kernel flashed on my stock sharp 3.13 and it is so far working fine. Any plans to make the 64-0 work on the normal rom?

Yes, I must have been not clear enough on my instructions, sorry. I\'ve updated them. 64-0 cannot work on normal ROM, since there is no space for /home. You have to flash Cacko/Crow ROMs to use 64-0 config.

I run a Crow like ROM and the 64-0 still doesn\'t work, maybe I didn\'t make that clear in my previous reply. No worries as I\'ve gone back to my own kernel, if I can find the details of the patches I might roll them into mine and see what happens.

A further update. When I installed the correct kernel for my Sharp 3.1 default 32-30 configuration everything worked fine. After renaming the backup it also restored fine.
Subsequent to this I decided to bite the bullet and install your latest 64-0 ROM and the new kernel and again everything works very well now. It is nice to have the extra memory for applications and /home on my Lexar 256 MB SD card.
Thanks for all your hard work on this.
Richard.

I dread to think of the hours that he must spend on improving the Zaurus software and all of us become the beneficiaries.

Thanks Maslovsky.
I\'m running the alpha 3 TKCrom with home on SD, courtesy of the new script. Your kernel, the 32 30 one!, appears to work fine.
I ended up rebooting from the gui an extra time to get all my apps to work as normal from home on SD but that was the only problem.
Thanks also for the usb-storage solution!
Excellent work!
PS with people like you and Zautrix we don\'t need Sharp much, do we?

I have the same problem, the sd card is a sandisk but it flies with the tk alpha 3 rom. So why should there be a difference?
Thanks

highfell you are totally right!... Since the launch of the Z, all we had and have the great luck that good friends around here has made great efforts to improve our loved Z\'s, I cant remenber all the names, but, as the time passes, I see how some friends made something really great, then they \"disappears\", but new \"good will & mind\" programers appears with new efforts for the benefit of all of us... is for sure that are a lot of this friends that like as maslovsky, take its time only to make better things for all us, so, Thank you really much to all of you!
By other side, heee Tux... if the question dont bother too much.... I wouldlike to ask so:
A)You are using the alpha 3 of the TKCrom2.0 and it worked fine with backup/restore prog?
B)The new script for home on SD that you used, is the standard script that appears in the ZUG downloads zone or is a modified version in some way... (in case that is a modified version, could you put a copy of it?...)
thank you very much for the patience aand best regards!
-
Answering your questions:
No Backup Restore does not work to CF or SD....
Home on SD script is the one in Other Cool Stuff in ZUG downloads...
Cheers
-
A)You are using the alpha 3 of the TKCrom2.0 and it worked fine with backup/restore prog?
I also had problems with this. For some reasom Alpha 3, does not allow you to backup your Zaurus in any circumstances.
I switched back to Version 1 of the TKR. To be honest I couldn\'t tell you of any noticeable difference between the two versions except that the backup and restore functions works on version 1.
Nigel Bamber
-
Hi! First of all, Tux, Thanx very much for take the time to answer!
About the topics, I use the TKC rom 1.0 with the new cacko kernel without trouble, in fact Im also install the memory monitor plugin that made a swap disk and enable/disable it , and original backup/restore utility and everything works totally fine....
well, the only thing that I would like to add is the use of the home-on-sd script that is in ZUG downloads, but in the info of this script said that is suited for the TKCrom2-alpha3 rom file, so in fact, the info exactly said that the scrist is:
\"This is to be used in conjunction with the TKCrom Version 2-alpha3 release. You can also modify the standard sharp rom, or tkc-v1 rom to work with this script, by modifying the /root/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit script to match the one that is included with the version-2-alpha3 tkcrom.\"....
So,I would like to ask, if somebody already made the changes that refers in the above paragraph, and tested it with the TKCrom1.0, or if someone could know what is the changes that are needed to the script, so in order that could be totally usefull with TKCrom1.0....
thanx & best regards & a nice day to all!

How can I make sure my SD card (where /home resides) is mounting async?
-
How can I make sure my SD card (where /home resides) is mounting async?
If you\'re using Crow like ROM, then first check by typing mount. If you see a \"sync\" option, then your card is mounted sync. Then do the following:
su
echo MOUNT_OPTIONS=\"async,noatime\"]/home/root/.rom_options
reboot
-
Hey Maslovsky, I\'m having issues with the async writing to the SD card. What happens is that after a length of time, button presses become very laggy/hit-and-miss and after a while stop registering reliably. I wasnt sure what this was (never been a problem before), but I suspected the async writing - and after some tests (moved all my docs over to the flash and started accessing them there) figured out that that was the problem. The card is an old Sandisk MMC card which has never really screwed up, although it\'s no doubt slow.
My question: how do I change it back to sync (which should make it work properly again)?
Is
echo MOUNT_OPTIONS="sync,noatime">/home/root/.rom_options
..good enough?
Thanks,
Yz

Yes, that\'s it. Some MMC/SD cards may have problems in async mode. It depends on particular hardware.
-
Thanks Maslovsky. I will try that. Unfortunately, I may not be correct in my initial assumption that it was an async writing issue. It seems the button problem is still happening.
Anyone else getting button lag w/ this rom and TKC v2alpha3?
Thanks all,
Yz

\"Initializing /home\". Then after about 5 min. It seems to try and run a binary file but fails. I get the following re-occurring error message :
\"/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: [: : interger expression expected\"
\"/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: /usr/bin.rom/expr: cannot execute binry file
I am not too sure what to do at this point aside from trying to re-flash the rom again.
Any suggestions??
Thanks

First, a great, great thanks to maslovsky for his work ! good job man :-)
I\'m using the 64-0 Cacko (+kernel patch + async config) on my 5500, and everything works fine.
Just for people who want to install it, BE PATIENT ! because on my 256 Mo SD card, it takes many, many times to install and to boot, but after it\'s Ok.
I\'ve installed from the ZuG Download wellenreiter (1.x) , the install is OK but when I launch it, it can recognize my driver (wlan-ng) but not the interface (eth0).
If I\'m issuing ] iwconfig I have nothing.
After reading many post on this, I want to test with the onroco driver but I can\'t find the hermes.conf in /etc/pcmcia.
Any idea ?
Regards.
oXo
-
ninjai, did you prepare your SD card properly? It must be ext2 formattted.
oxo, you\'ll need to create hermes.conf file if it does not exist and add appropriate entries:
device \"orinoco_cs\"
class \"hermes\"
module \"hermes\", \"orinoco\", \"orinoco_cs\"
<add entry for your card here...>
You can copy your card info from wlan-ng.conf file.
Then copy /etc/pcmcia/spectrum to /etc/pcmcia/hermes
Also edit /home/QtPalmtop/etc/network/WLAN.conf:
CardType = wlan-ng spectrum hermes
This will make network applet recognize orinico drivers properlly.
Finaly restart pcmcia (/etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart) and reinsert the card.
After that issue the following commands:
cardctl scheme qpewlan0
cardctl reset
...and your card will be recognized by wellenreiter.

Cacko Kernel is an updated kernel image for Sharp ROM 3.10/3.13 and compatible ROMs.
This NOT a full ROM update, this is only a kernel. You\'ll be able to continue to use your existing \"Sharp ROM 3.10 or 3.13\" after you flash this kernel update.
<end>
With that said I used the default memory layout zImage-sl5500-32-30 kernel. Note you must rename zImage-sl5500-32-30 to just zImage!

Thank you for the reply ,but that was not the answer to my question.I know it is only only an kernel updat not a rom update , but to me it is confusing because in the downloadsection there are severa different kernelupdates and i do not know which one to choose . I am just a little bit ignorant but I also read the preceding questions and answers .I also noticed that the icons still keep changing from the normal size to the smaller updated version size .And after asyncing the sdcard/home ,I did not notice any improvement on the rw-speed .I have an apacer sdcard maybe that can cause it?

Hi,
Has anyone had difficulty running the proc modification for the sony-ericsson patch?
echo 1 ] /proc/sys/net/irda/max_tx_window
I get the error
cannot create /proc/sys/net/irda/max_tx_window: directory non-existent.
I\'ve tried this under the normal bash prompt and as su. /proc/sys/net/irda/ exists but I can\'t create anything in there (returns \'no such file or directory\'). To be fair, I\'m not sure whether I\'d be able to touch a file in proc anyway.
Am I doing something stupid? This worked with the tkr rom and the previous cacko kernel. Using 64-0 on a 5500.

Is there a way to use the 32-30 kernel with the cacko rom?
I like the rom setup but the home on sd is way to slow on my Sandisk card, even with Async and the new MMCSD module.

Can the 5500 / 64-0 Hybrid ROM with Qtopia 1.6.2 also use the 2.4.18 kernel update and async config? Is it neccessary to start the installation with a sharp 3.10 already installed? I\'ve played around with the Hybrid rom a little and it\'s great - like having a new Zaurus again.

No, Cacko kernel will not work with Hybrid ROM. The kernels are a bit different - Hybrid ROM has JFFS2 support and different partitions layout.

I did not make a commulative patch, I prefer to apply existing patches separately. There are only a few patches applied, which are available for download in OZ and OE buildroots.
- battarey % patch (http://openembedded.bkbits.net:8080/packages/hist/linux/openzaurus-sa-2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix20030509/battery.patch?nav=index.html|src/.|src/linux|src/linux/openzaurus-sa-2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix20030509)

- Orinico/Spectrum drivers 13e with monitoring mode (http://openzaurus.bkbits.net:8080/buildroot/src/packages/orinoco-0.13?nav=index.html|src/.|src/packages)
I'm attaching a config file for the SL-5500 - the only few differences from Sharp's default are:
- smaller console fonts
- Sharp logo removed
- Wireless Extentions enabled
- CONFIG_FS_SYNC option is off
Let me know if that helps you

Very strange problem with the kernel:
1)Initialization of home directory seems to be too slow. Something wrong with my card? I changed the driver to the one in download section, which would boost the r/w speed in sharp\'s rom, still helps little. I have updated the initrd.bin file to contain the .rom_options, also with the driver. But it is still so slow. It has been in the updating for about 5 minutes.
2)Suspend hang: When I push the cancel button to suspend it, it only turn off the light, and then all other operations are useless. Only by turn the switch to replace battery mode, then push the button again, it will begin to reboot.
3)Crash: it seems that this is the famous 2 reboots crash. I need to reboot it when I need, but there is no suspend in it, then when issuing a reboot, it will crash, only push the reset button will solve the problem.
4)Backup content can\'t be restored.
It seems there are too many problems with my Zaurus(SL5500).

Thanks maslovsky!
Your great work benefits us all.
It seems that the problem comes from the SD card. Any one can confirm: Kingston 256MB SD-M256B1 seems to be too slow to work in ordinary usage.
Sorry for my carelessness. I just read it.

The only real difference is the amount of write operations to the SD card. If 64/0 memory layout is too slow for you, just stick to the default one. Use swapfile when you need more memory...

Hi maslovsky,
first your 64-0-ROM for SL-5500 is great work! Thanks for it. :-)
Well, I've some questions about it...
With the new ROM I've found a "Language"-Application on settings-menu, but no information about. What can I do with it, but how can I install more lanugages (shows only english at this time).
With this kernel I should get the whole 64 MB as RAM/Main Memory, right? Well, I'm sure It was at first time I've startet system information. But now, after some installations, system information shows around 47 MB as whole RAM. Any ideas why this could be?
Thanks
Frank

Yes, you can try language packages from OPIE, but they may not work...

Unfortunately, this is an issue with this kernel (slightly wrong build configuration). It was only found a couple of weeks ago or so after the kernel was out for a while. I hope to get it fixed with the next version, but I can't tell exactly when...

maslovsky:
Would you like to kindly merge v2.6 series net/irda/parameters.c's function irda_extract_integer to current kernel and compile one version?
I have problem in sending files via winxp machines to Zaurus. Too frequent disconnection due to incompatible parameter:
" invalid parameter length! Expected 1 bytes, but value had 2 bytes!\n"
I looked into v2.6's kernel source, it seems that it has fixed the problem: it will just print the error message and continue the processing.
Thanks.
-
maybe I'm wrong, it seems that you have applied the patch for IRDA. Don't know what the solutions is for the problem.
It seems that remove the irda patch would solve the problem.

Hi Maslovski,
I am using the rom everyday and an very grateful for the work you are doing for all the SL-5500/5000D users out there that cannot afford a newer model.
I have a quick question: do you have an ETA for the new version of the rom so that it can use the full 64MB ram? It wiill be of great help for me
Thanks !

Running on the 64-0 kernel, and it seems that whenever the pda resumes from suspension, the bottom taskbar doesn't show anything but black. So I have to click on different parts to make it redraw itself.
But my real problem is it seems that after resuming from suspension, I can't start anymore new programs. The hourglass will show up for a while and then disappear, but nothing else shows up. Anyone experiencing similar problems?

I left a file manager on before I press the cancel(on/off) buton to suspend zaurus, and after I resumed, it seems that the sd card is not properly mounted. There seem to be fewer folders and they are mostly empty. Anyway to fix that?

I am running SL-5500 with Sharp Rom 3.13.
I installed the new Cacko Kernel for SL-5500 32-30.
My main interest was to have the battery applet show the correct percentages (which it does).
I have absolutely no problem with booting up, and all my applications work perfectly.
The only problem I have is what was reported in a previous post by Xaser, that when I plug in my charger (I don't use the cradle), the charge light flashes.
I tried doing a suspend, then plugging in the charger as suggested.
This works sometimes, but most of the time it doesn't work.
I have to keep playing with it to get the light to stay on steady.
Has this problem been addressed recently, and is there something else I should know about.
I have read through this whole thread twice and do not see any other posts regarding it, or any others complaining about it, only the one above mentioned previous post.
Other than this problem, the kernel seems to work perfectly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Doug

I have had the same problem with the charge light in the past. You may try reseating the battery and maybe even try cleaning the connections. There may also be a bad charger connection involved. I am not really sure how the problem went away when I had it. I do know that my battery was not being charged when the light was blinking.
-
This is a known problem with this kernel version. Try to reinsert the connector a few times, or try plugging it with zaurus suspended, etc. I know it may be annoying, but I wasn't able to figure out the problem...

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it.
Now I have to decide if I want to deal with it or not.
My greatest concern is that I have seen posts where people have bricked their z's over battery charging issues, and I wouldn't want this to happen to mine.
Please advise whether you think this is an issue or not.
Does the kernel control the charging of the battery (seems like it has some affect on it), or does it just report the percentage of charge left in the battery?
Thanks again, Doug
-
Well, here's the situation with the battery charge indicator...
With the Cacko Kernel installed, I had a very difficult time getting the Z to charge (battery light keeps flashing).
Also when it did work, there was a delay in the battery icon changing colors from blue to "charging", and when I unplugged the charger, there was also a delay from "charging" to the blue icon.
I flashed with the Sharp Rom 3.13 and when I plug in the charger, the icon change is instant, and when I unplug it is also instant.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not, just thought I would mention it.
As much as I like the battery level feature, I have reverted back to just the Sharp Rom.
Thank you for all your hard work, your efforts are greatly appreciated. But like you said, it is very annoying.
I would absolutely use the kernel if you figured out the problem, since I can't afford another higher-up Z, and I need all the software I can get to work on the SL-5500.
Thanks again, Doug
-
I have also done the same and reflashed back to the standard ROM 3.13 which was scary in itself since it wasn't that long ago that Sharp relieved me (translate: ripped off) of $108 to reflash a corrupt ROM!
I patched it with the cacko kernel so I could finally use my Sony Ericsson phone but the flashing battery light problem got to me too since I am concerned that the constant inserting and reinserting of the device to strike lucky each time in getting it to a non blinking state has me concerned that I may end up damaging the connector in the cradle. I did think about just leaving it flashing but in my bedroom overnight in the dark the blinking would get on my nerves and it sounds like the battery may not be charging properly in that state anyway which isn't good.
I tend to use the Sony Ericsson with my bluetooth Pocket PC most of the time anyway so I guess I can live without the connectivity on my Sharp for a while longer.
I heard it said that the communication problem exists because Sony Ericsson use a non standard method. If this is the case, why is it that both my Pocket PC and Palm can communicate with it, without a hitch?
Sadly, it seems that as soon as one problem is solved in a Sharp ROM, another just as serious an issue crops up
Oh well back to the drawing board. As dougeeebear just said, if that problem can be fixed (without causing another serious problem to replace it!) then I'll happily reinstall. though
-
One solution to the annoying blink problem is to reboot your Z, it will start with the LED steady. It's not so complex. Maybe you guys can have a try. If I have time, I may look at the battery part driver for solution.

You're right. Rebooting does start the Z with the led on steady.
Nice work!!!!
It would be great if you could check out the battery driver.

I have the same problem... It's kind of annoying that I have to reboot my z every time I suspend it. I remember reading somewhere that on another /home on sd approach, they had to tweak something in the suspend/resume scripts to make the SD mount properly. I'm looking for it now, as I have reflashed to cacko.
** edit **
I didn't find the answer, I must have seen it on devnet. But I did go buy a new SD card and that solved the problem. my lexar must have been off on the timing and couldn't resume properly.

Hey Maslovsky,
First thanks for the updated kernel image for SL-5500.
This is great work.
I'm trying to write a kernel module for my Zaurus 5500 to
support wireless ad hoc networking between Zs. The kernel
module needs support of netfilter. So I have three questions
about Cacko kernel zImage-sl5500-32-30:1. Has zImage-sl5500-32-30
already supported netfilter? 2. Can I get the kernel source
or header files? 3. Can you recommend cross-compile toolchains compatible
with the kernel source? Thanks a lot,
Derek

Hey everyone, anyone
I have been using the new Caclko 64-0 kernel with my 5500 and enjoying it, esp. the battery app.
I installed the 1.9.1.6 KDE-PIM and whoops!
I first noticed that I no longer had any ipks listed in the uninstall area. and any later installed programs never had their icons change (or show up as installed or uninstallable.)
KDE-PIM would not start either. So I re-booted.
Still had the no-show in the install-uninstall lists....so I decided to flash Cacko again.
And now, after reset, I am getting same message as earthcoder reported. along with saying that I can do normal start with Control-D.
Well, all the key combinations in the world just bring me back to the prompt; as do any further resets.
I have reflashed several more times, but the same result upon restart.
Any suggestions?
-
Well...
I just re-formatted my SD and reflashed.
Everything back to normal! Luckily I had recently backed up!
-
Just so you don't misunderstand, everything is working, the third time around, because I have NOT installed KDEPIM 1.9.16!
-
The Files arnt there any more. Were they droped dou to compatibility problems? Or are they still available. Im looking to get a liitle bit more out of my tkc ROM v1 on my 5500
Cheers
Craig.
-
Found em. The files are under kernel source not the roms section as listed.
Installed and working fine on a tkc v1 30/32 with kTrove to put the apps onto SD so I can keep the card VFAT. As advertised write access to the cards is much quicker.

Well After many months of using the 64-0 kernel(zImage) with what I thought was the correct filesystem, I have had to reflash to get my WiFi card working. This time I know I have the files correct as I downloaded them in the same zip file, and I am now experiencing the infamous blinking battery light issue.
I think based off of my experience it is pretty safe to say that there is a config/version/other problem somewhere in the file structure that is causing the blinking rather than an issue with the kernel itself.
I am relieved though, that after a month of "bangin o' the head" I finally have WiFi.
As soon as I have my linux box back up and running I will dig into this ROM as deeply as I can and try to find any clues as to what causes this.
(OR if my wife lets me I may just upgrade to the new SL-C1000 )

I guess this issue is now dead in the water, with all the focus on the newer cacko updates going on.
I was hoping it might get fixed.

Hi all,
for those that might be interested, I noticed something about the blinking charging light.
If you plug the adaptor to charge the Z and it starts blinking (with Z suspended or not, I didn't find a difference there), then you unplug it (or maybe no need to do so) 'call' battery applet to see how much battery you've got left, plug it back and it will work.
There are many different combinations, e.g. you can tap on battery applet before charging and then just plug the charger.
I think it works always, but I need some more testing. Consider that, when I run out of battery I plug the adaptor, and if it doesn't work (if it does I touch nothing, don't even look ), then I try the "tapping on batt-applet" trick, for what I have to turn on the Z if it was suspended.
-
@JoP:
It doesn't make any difference on mine.
I'm using 32-30 zImage with 3.13 Sharp Rom.
Doug
-
That's weird.
I have just tried it on mine and it worked again.
After tapping on batteryapplet (I'm using Cacko's), it didn't blink any of the 4 times I tried. (And it seldom happens to me that it works the first time I plug it).
I'm using Cacko's 64-0.
If any one else could try we might get some clarifying result. I don't think any other applet I've got installed has anything to do with that but batteryapplet.
-
I have the recommended battery applet installed:
To get actual battery percentage displayed in Qtopia, you need an updated version of Battery Applet,
which is available for download: http://my-zaurus.nadrod.ru/opie.html (http://my-zaurus.nadrod.ru/opie.html)
**EDIT** That server does not seem to be available right now.
The file name is qtopia-batteryapplet_1.0.2_arm.ipk
-
That link was going pretty slow yesterday, but I see you've got a mistake there.
The right one is:
http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/opie.html (http://my-zaurus.narod.ru/opie.html)
-
I just gave up on it AGAIN, and flashed the Sharp rom without the zImage.
Thanks for trying, anyway.
Doug
-
That's a pity,
my big annoyance with using Cacko ROM was that issue with battery charging.
But now that this seems to work (for me, unless ) I have the Z as I wanted it, lot of apps (since I use 64-0), no problems installing apps and no worries with battery (at the moment... )
I have just plugged the Z to outlet, I still had some batt left but I want to use WIFI.
It blinked.
I unplugged, tapped on qtopia-batteryapplet, left it on screen showing mid-charge, plugged again and worked
It has worked too many times to be just coincidence! (I want to believe )
I installed Cacko Rom 64-0, and later upgraded to new kernel. Never tried with Sharp 3.13 Rom, though.
-
dougeebear,
I am slowly working my way through the battery.c and the apm patch for it. my C knowledge is dismal, but I'm pretty sure that something in the patch raised a threshhold level to the point where the z beleives that the charger isn't quite putting out enough power. Hence the blinking light. That's why repeatedly plugging the power will eventually yield a solid charging light.
Once I get my knoppix dev environment finished, I'll try recompiling the kernel without the APM patch and see if the problem goes away. If it does I'll post the kernel for interim use until I figure out the APM patch.
-
technojunkie,
I am using the 32-30 zImage with Sharp rom 3.13.
The only reason I use this zImage is for the battery percent display.
It would really be great if the battery light worked right.
Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Doug
-
technojunkie,
if you could fix that, that'd be great!
I hope I have some time one of these days to get into C programming, so I can help somehow. (I think I forgot all I sometime learnt about C, back at college... now I started with Python, but I need more time... or a lotto prize )
Have you tried what I posted up here? Just curious...
BTW,
did you find a better behaving with you highspeed SD card on 64-0 ROM?
I think the limit would be on Z SD reading speed, but if it is faster than a regular SD card... That's the only thing I'd like to improve in this Rom, installing ipks faster!
Thanks again for everything.
-
[...] I'm pretty sure that something in the patch raised a threshhold level to the point where the z beleives that the charger isn't quite putting out enough power. Hence the blinking light.[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=78026\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Hmmm, I wonder ... while I have no experience with Cacko whatsoever, I've been using the battery patch by itself with Sharp's 2.4.6 and 2.4.18 kernels (2.38 and 3.13 ROMs with modified battery applet respectively) and didn't observe any ill effects.
Best regards,
Chris.
-
I am not 100% sure it's the kernel/patch but its my best guess at this point. I had used the 64-0 image with the kernel that was released just previous to this one(hence my wifi headache) and didn't have the blinking light issue until I loaded this kernel. I am kinda limited for the next month or so as to what I can do to track it down as I will be on vacation for a while, and still have to set up my live CD dev environment.
As for the High Speed SD card, it was the first one I found that could resume from suspend without locking up. If you do a search for home on SD or 64-0 and SD posted by me, you'll see the progression I went through for that.
another thing I am working on is changing the APM suspend/resume sripts for this rom to allow the FS_SYNC option to work better. Once I got my high Speed SD card, I found that trying to suspend with FS_SYNC set my Z would hang, but when I disabled it it would work fine.
As for the battery icon thing, It didn't work for me. But I have found that if I put it in the cradle, suspend the Z, then reseat it in the cradle about 7/10 times it will work.
-
Happy vacation
-
I am a freaking scatterbrained bonehead. I left my daytimer(with my Z)in the walmart parking lot last night. Nobody has turned it in to the lost and found so I can only assume its gone.
I'll still work on the kernel and put it up for testing, but expect me to move slowly until I can replace my Z.
-
Does anyone know if the "applications that have been removed" are available
anywhere? The link seems to have been dead for months. Many thanks for

Hi!
Yes, I found the apps there, and I just (last night) started to check
out the cacko ROM. So far, I really, really like it. Unfortunately I've
been running into problems with the version of Opera in that is in
that .zip file. I don't remember the exact errors, but it would not
install, and complained about the tar format...
I was able to install jeode, and the jeode demos, but have not tried
to use them yet.
If anyone else knows what's going on with the Opera in that .zip, or
has a pointer to another one, that would be cool.
Many thanks,
John

There is Opera 7.30 on page 3 where you got your cacko apps.
Also, if you have a Yahoo account, you can find Opera 7.55 in the SL5500 group at Yahoo Groups http://groups.yahoo.com/ (http://groups.yahoo.com/)
Also, make sure the files you are installing are in the ROOT of your card, not in a directory.
Otherwise, you will usually get an error message.
*EDIT*
This thread is getting off its intended topic.
Let's try to keep it on-topic (meaning me too)
-
I had problem with Opera 7.55 on my 5500. It didnt display some pages and waited with message "waiting for user-confirmation of cool" I'm back to 6.0 from sharp rom 3.13

Well..... I have good news and not so good news.
The good news is: I saved a bunch of money.... And got another 5500.
The not so good news is: after flashing the ROM and then the kernel I DON'T have the blinking battery light.
I have tried killing the battery and putting it in the charger, charging from various battery levels reseating the z in the charger about 50 times. And last but not least my 4.5v car adapter as it used to kick off the blinking light.
Here is the process I went through:
Step 1. Flash this: http://www.zaurususergroup.org/UpDownload+...it-lid-53.phtml (http://www.zaurususergroup.org/UpDownload+index-req-getit-lid-53.phtml)
Step 2. Boot the Z and setup a fresh SD card
Step 3. Flash This: http://www.zaurususergroup.org/UpDownload+...t-lid-223.phtml (http://www.zaurususergroup.org/UpDownload+index-req-getit-lid-223.phtml)
Step 4. Install the battery applet
If anybody would like to test this and see if they still get the blinking light I would appreciate it.
-
@technojunkie:
Sorry, that doesn't help me. I am using standard sharp rom 3.13.
The 32-30 kernel always gives me the flashing battery light.
Thanks anyway.
Doug
EDIT
I also do not use the cradle to charge my z.
I always use the power supply directly connected.
-
Well Phooey...
Ummm... question, When you flash the 32-30 kernel do you do kernel only or FileSystem+kernel?
-
I flash the kernel only.
I tried to flash Ospack+kernel together, and the kernel does not get flashed that way.

OK so you're using Sharp's filesystem with the cacko kernel. Well that narrows things down a bit (I think) I have been away from this for a while working on homework (both work and school) I hope to get back into it again soon.
-
Hi gang,
Any good news about the battery blinking problem?
I've just got from Qtopia v2.1.1 back to SharpROM 3.1.3 and would really like to try the 32-30 Cacko Kernel
-
I am using Sharp ROM 3.13 with Cacko Kernel 32-30.
Battery flashing (blinking)... I found software (ZLed - aka Zaurus Led Signilizer) and disabled Battery blinking in it... It helps!!!
Memory (Installd memory applet gives 8Mb Swap from RAM, wich more faster than my SD)
Questions:
Should I install mmcsd.0 driver insted of Sharp_mmcsd.0? How can i do it? Only replace and rename?
Should I enable assync mode for SD? (how?)
Can anyone fixed bug with memory in Cacko Advanced ROM/Crow Rom, when Installing Cacko Kernel 64-0, system memory 48Mb insted of 64?

I tried your suggestion.
True, the light doesn't blink, but the actions are the same.
In other words, when you plug it in and the light doesn't come on, it's only because the program is controlling the light.
The problem is not actually fixed.
It was worth a try though
I can't help you with your other questions.

Hi Doug,
Do you know if there is any option to install the kernel and disable or uninstall only the battery applet? This could be a provisory solution.

AFAIK, whether or not a battery applet is installed or disabled has nothing to do with the blinking light problem.
The problem is with the kernel.
This is a known problem with this kernel version. Try to reinsert the connector a few times, or try plugging it with zaurus suspended, etc. I know it may be annoying, but I wasn't able to figure out the problem...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=48336\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
So, I think your answer would be no.

I'm pretty sure it's the kernel as well partly due to th eabove commants but mostly due to the fact that the 64/0 image wipes the contents of /var on reboot incidently causing the new battery applet to 'uninstall' leaving you with the original applet ans a blinking light.
Dougee I'm still poking away at this so hopefully I can find a workaround or solution.
Are you one of the folks whose z won't even charge because of the blinking light or are you in the 'inconvenience' club?

simply replace and rename for the mmcsd.o and you will be fine.
I had bad luck with async mode not liking to suspend but you can try it.
as for the memory bug My system status shows 62516k total memory (which I think is pretty darn close to 64MB)
The kernel+filesystem that I have is detailed a little earlier in this thread.

I guess I'm in the 'inconvenience' club, because sometimes it charges and sometimes it blinks.
You keep mentioning the 64/0 image, but I am using 32/30
Doug
-
Yes I know
All I was pointing out is that by accident the new battery applet got kicked on my Z and I was back to the original. so if it were the fault of the applet the behavior would have changed.
4 day weekend coming up. I'll backup my Z and flash 32-30 and see if I can get the blinking light again.
-
Right on the battery applet. I have tried it with and without the new one. It was the same either way.
Have a good one

I have never had a problem with the new battery applet getting uninstalled.
My only problem is with the blinking battery light.

I have running tKc rom with the Cacko kernel update, for about a week now and I have the blinking battery light issue, but it is very sporatic. Sometimes it goes for day without happening and once it does, I just disconnect the power and reconnect it, sometimes once does it, sometimes it take two or three times. Sometimes it needs to be suspended, sometimes not. Not anywhere near a deal breaker. Not ever that much of a annoyance. The speed is much better and I can open more progs at a time without crashing. I often have Beiks English Dictionary Pro, QPsword, Opera and Opie Reader open at once and maybe check the Calendar (KOPI) in the midst of it all. Qpdf2 is a little slow to open (I tried to install " t1lib_5.0.2-r0_arm.ipk to do the fix that someone posted elsewhere, but the file doesn't work. Maybe it's not for sl5500???), but everything else opens and moves faster. I had originally tried it with 64-0 Cacko rom, but i did something wrong. I kind of want to try it again, but this is working so nicely, I hate to mess with it (at least for a while). Thanks Maslovsky.

I can't get the zaurususergroup.org download to work. It keeps telling me "No input file specified." Does anyone have a mirror up? Or could somebody email me the 5000D kernel? fiferboy at gmail dot com

Since I have have read this post umpteen times and have used it to switch from OPIE to Cacko/Crow ROM on my Collie, I feel compelled to post. I have installed the Cacko ROM and the 64-0 update, replaced the SD driver and changed the FATOPS parameter in the sdcontrol file and the entire distribution works well. It has been up and running with several reboots and a hard reset for two days without problems. WiFi works, Opera, Hancom apps, kopi, kapi and usb-storage all work like a charm.
This is the fourth (or fifth?) such installations with this arrangement. The other three (or four) met with miserable failure. It turns out that two or three of the installations were "broken" by SD card issues. I had a Sandisk that just could not stomach having an ext2 partition. I purchased a new Lexar and tried it. Only partial success. That time I neglected to re-flash with the 64-0 update kernel and the thing was unbearably slow. I switched to a Hentges ROM, which worked, but had no Opera or usb-mass storage. I tried Cacko/Crow ROM again, this time following directions from this thread and [a href=\"http://wach-o-witz.de/sharp_zaurus/cacko.html]http://wach-o-witz.de/sharp_zaurus/cacko.html[/url], and installation went well. Applications also ran fairly fast. However, the next time I booted, it kept looping into the Zaurus flash screen. I went back to the Hentges ROMs, this time installing loop-file images and direct root installations and found tons of write errors. a faq on the OZ website indicated that some SDs do not handle ext2 well and need to be zeroed. So I zeroed my disk as per the instructions on that faq and my very last installation went well.
While this distro is old, it works well. The installation process is quite complicated, and thus prone to errors, but once done completely right, makes the Collie into a highly functional device. Cheers to Maslovsky for your work on this distro and all the posters who clearified the installation process.

I realize this is a very old thread and I was the last post, but perhaps some folks have information regarding these ROMs. I have gone full circle on the various ROMs. My current ROM is OZ OPIE, but it is problematic and I want to try the Cacko Crow ROMS again. Does anyone know where I can find the Cacko Crow 32-32 ROM? Also, where can I find the home on SD script from the tkc rom? I had these things on a backup CD, but the CD is gone as is the download links on the ZUG website.

The script at the link given is the modified one, I think from Derekp, that addressed some of the issues with the one included in the tkcrom. What problems/bugs are you referring to?
What does the new improved script offer? I'm going to look at the site you refer to and I'm also going to look for the Crow site. I'll post if I find it.
Perhaps you might care to bump the threads at the bottom of the forum about fixing the Zug downloads? I feel like I've become nagger in chief to the admins!
Good luck and I'll try and find you the info.

Perhaps you might care to bump the threads at the bottom of the forum about fixing the Zug downloads? I feel like I've become nagger in chief to the admins!
Good luck and I'll try and find you the info.

To tell you the truth, I do no know what was wrong with the original home on sd script. I read about it when I first starting using the Z a year ago and did not know what they were talking about. Only that the new script name has ....test..zip in the name. Funny. It is possible that the current site has the modified script but changed the name of the zip file.
Now, another moment of ignorance. I do not know who hosts the ZUG site, so would the admins of this forum be able to do anything !

Hi Chris,
the script at the link I gave is the same one I originally got from the ZUG downloads. I seem to remember it had the name you gave when I originally got it. As i remember the original, buggy, script is in the rom. The fixed script, the one you have been talking about needs to be run by cd-ing to the directory it is in and running it from that location.
Your question about who hosts the ZUG site made me feel very old!
The admins for OESF are the admins for the ZUG!
www.zaurusgroup.org is the link to try. It is the original way of getting to the forums etc!
Have a look. The downloads section had all the files you have been asking for.
If you look at the threads about "whats needs to be fixed" and fixing the attachments you will see that dz has been saying that he doesn't have access to all the files, that ISO can only deal with a limited number of the problems and offroadgeek (the originator of the site) has said that he will try to see that dz gets all the stuff he needs and that he is looking for some trusted people to take over the whole thing.
By the way, I did find a mirror for the crow rom using Google. It doesn't have the original apps though. But you've no doubt discovered that they can be found in various feeds.
Cheers

tux,
I really appreciate the effort you are putting into this. Just to let you know the link "zaurusgroup.com" is no longer active. Bummer. I also tried to suck the ZUG site to get some of the files. No dice. Oh well. I am sure those files will turn up one way or another.
Thanks,
Chris--
**Update**
I found a whole slew of the apps and roms usually found on ZUG. Here is the link:
http://www.elsix.org/downloads/ (http://www.elsix.org/downloads/)
I had been on this page before and thought I had bookmarked, but did not. This link did not appear on my google search for the various roms, but did appear when looking for the updated home on sd rom for tkc: prep-home-sd_test5.zip.
So, if folks are looking for the Cacko ROMS for the SL-5500 and others, the Hybrid ROMS for the Collie and a whole bunch of other stuff, this is the site to go!
Thank you tux and everybody else who helped me look for these ROMS.

Hi Chris,
I should have put org on the link not com. It is there but many of the features don't work.
I shouldn't post past my bed time!
I'm afraid you'll discover that a lot of the ELSIX links are to the ZUG page, which does exist, but the links to the ZUG downloads don't work!
I have grabbed the initrd.bin's that kb7??? uploaded in a thread about 2 gb Sd cards on the 5500. I hope to check them out soon
Cheers

The links on the elsix page are dead ends (to the ZUG page). However, hidden on the downloads/feed page are a bunch of "lost" software titles that seem to be hosted on that page. The upgraded home on sd card script is there. I know now what the difference is. It seems that the script went through several upgrades, the latest was test 5. It seems that that script overwrote a swap file on the ram disk. I also will be testing Steven's ROMs shortly. I have downloaded the Cacko 32-30 kernel and will be running Steven's modified tkc2 rom on top of it. I am also going to test the asyncio kernel just for kicks.
