I am trying to setup my C860 as fast as possible so I am wondering...What are your favorite Apps for your clamshell unit.
I just migrated to the Cacko QT rom, so please note which rom you are using (and if the app(s) would run on the QT rom, if you happen to know).

KeyHelper, Portabase, KanjiNirvana, Zten, Opie Reader, Ko/PI, QKonsole, ZEditor, Tree!Explorer QT, Opera 7 and Cacko Sysinfo with mount tab added are apps I use daily.
tkcPlayer (as long as you don\'t mind the occasional crash and are willing to pay cash), ZSafe and IQNotes are also usefull.
All of these run on Cacko 1.21, but I\'m currently using Standard Sharp Qtopia (for Japanese Support)

tkcPlayer is no longer needed as such, as the new Cacko ROM includes the Media Player from the 6000, which includes ogg playback.

Yeah true, but I haven\'t gotten around to getting it from the Cacko rom to use on the Standard rom and I\'ve already paid for tkcPlayer.

Just wondering, what you would be losing from Japanese support if you switched ROMs. Actually, I want to play around with some of the ROMs out there but Japanese support (most notably the CRIM) is essential for me at the moment.

You would lose the CRIM, Sharp SLjisho dictionary, translator (if you have C860) and most importantly Fonts - the Cacko rom repalces the Japanese helevetica fonts with European helevetica fonts, meaning that you will get boxes instead of kanji. You can reinstall the fonts of course but I find it easier to just add the parts I want from the other roms to the working Japanese base.
I highly recommend Zten and KanjiNirvana (KaNi) if you need/want Japanese support.

BTW, my own preferred apps are IQnotes, portabase, Zeditor (if only it implemented word wrap at word level and iso-8859-1 support!), ZSafe, Konsole, QashMoney, TabSetting and KeyHelper.

Same Here. I\'ve managed to build my own gnuplot ok, and am using Simon Pickering\'s octave build from http://sgp.zaurii.net/binaries/index.html#Octave (http://sgp.zaurii.net/binaries/index.html#Octave)
Is this the one you\'re using, or do you know of another source (utimately I wan\'t to build my own, but first I need to set up a f77 toolchain......) I appear to have some minor \"linking\" issues with Simon\'s.

Setup is a 760 w/ Cacko 1.21 ROM.
The killer app that keeps me from migrating permanently to pdaXrom is FreeNoteQT.

I\'ve been using this to take lecture notes all this year, and now I can\'t live without it. The best feature of any freehand note taking app I\'ve ever seen is the ability to have a canvas that grows to whatever size you need it on the fly. There\'s quite a few other unique ideas that make drawing neat and easy (excellent for those maths lectures where you are constantly sketching functions). The automatic export to pdf is also excellent.
Does anyone know of anything comparable that runs under X?

No I\'m using 2.1.57 which is the latest unstable version. I\'ll package it up and update the web site this weekend (I\'ve also made packages of the bits and bobs on there rather than my favourite tarball method ;-)).
The details on how to build toolchains are in the Linux Applications section of the forum. I rebuilt the OZ gcc3.x, libc2.3 one to have F77, I\'ve also rebuilt the pdaXrom toolchain (GCC3.x and libc2.2) which should hopefully be able to build binaries which will run on any machine with any ROM. This is what I plan to test this weekend.
What are the particular linking issues you\'re having? To do with libncurses as ever?

This Easter break has been a godsend and I\'m trying to catch up on 6+ months worth of zaurus SL-Cxx0 development.
I took your 2.0.17 octave build for ncurses 5.3 and built ncurses 5.4 and it ran just fine under the Cacko 1.18 ROM. I\'ve recently installed Cacko 1.21 (which included ncurses 5.0) and octave is complaining about:
octave: Symbol `PC\' has different size in shared object, consider re-linking
Maybe this is nothing, but I seem to recall that PC stands for \'program counter\' which keeps track of which instruction is being executed at any one time - this might be important?? It doesn\'t seem to have effected the way octave is running though.....

under cacko qt .. I like opera in fullscreen and terminal so I can ssh out to irc/im ...
I also enjoy the qt nethack

ps: when travelling, I also like to have mp3s playing. that is, on a plane, a CF of mp3s can replace the wifi that is normally used for opera.

I doubt this is anything too important, I\'d try installing a later version of libncurses on your Cacko machine (is that possible? Is the ROM writable? If not you\'ll have to check/alter LD_LIBRARY_PATH to get it in before the built-in version). Actually if it\'s working then don\'t worry too much.

The apps I use most are (in no particular order): keyhelper,
Ko/PI, SafeDee, Opera, apache & phpwiki, ssh & unison.
And Froot (even though using it with C760 is kinda awkward).
I\'m still looking for a good and fast note taking application.
I have tried IQnotes, but I never got really comfortable with the
GUI.

lardman, I tried installing Octave from your web page. I just got my hands on a C860 and am using the default Sharp ROM. I haven\'t been able to locate \"less\" anywhere (the version on killefiz has broken links, the only version I have found is for a libncurses.so.5 and I have libncurses.so.4 - and I can\'t seem to make a symlink, it\'s read-only there...?)..
But besides that, my Z complains that the .ipk is corrupted. I tried downloading it directly and also to PC first, then Z over USB. Nada.
What should I do next? Thanks...

Yes, it\'s a good app. but i have problem with pdf export. Text is coded in Japan, so acrobat (on windows) search the Japan caracters on the web to display my file ??

Hmm, can\'t find a libncurses.so.4 version. Install version 5. If the worst comes to the worst then use this one here: http://sgp.zaurii.net/binaries/libncurses.so.5.3 (http://sgp.zaurii.net/binaries/libncurses.so.5.3)
Stick it in /usr/lib or /usr/local/lib and create symlinks from it:
libncurses.so.5.3 -] libncurses.so.5
libncurses.so.5 -] libncurses.so
The ipk seems fine to me. Make sure you can rename it to .tar.gz and open it on the PC. If not then the PC has either decided to corrupt or partially uncompress it, etc.

Thanks for the tips, I\'ll give it another try! I\'m brand new to the Zaurus world, so I\'m sure I\'m just doing some stupid things. I\'ll let you know how it goes (and probably ask more questions).

The newest package 2.1.57 of octave installed ok for me, but the older ones wouldn\'t. Anyway, after installing libreadline I think I need \"libgcc_s.so.1\" still, but I can\'t seem to locate that. I found a suggestion to install a package from OZ 3.3.6-pre1 feed... do you have a suggestion? Thx again..

Try StageOne. It is commercial but not expensive and it is a delight. Similar to IQnotes but much nicer. You can get a free trial download so give it a spin.

I use tkcEditor all the time to edit perl, which I then run using the Zaurus perl build from http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/ (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/) ... but I\'d love anyone to tell me of a better text editor which works on the Cacko ROMs and has syntax colouring and multiple file support (i.e. you can open more than one file at a time). I suppose another application on the list for me is QKonsole even if it does crash when you wake up the Z.
Using the C860 for perl coding makes it probably the single most useful (and already cost-effective) thing I\'ve ever owned - I basically salvage 1-2 hrs of commute time which would otherwise be almost wasted.

Now that I\'ve had my C860 for a couple of weeks, I\'m getting to grips with the various apps that are available. The ones that I\'m using every day are:
KO/Pi - Totally indispensable as far as I\'m concerned.
Address Book - Still using the one in the Cacko Rom so far. It\'s actually not too bad, but I\'m looking forward to the KA/Pi one later in the year.
Stage One - I love this app for meeting notes and jotting down thoughts.
Tree Explorer QT - The best File Manager I\'ve found
Textmaker - I\'ve been a TM fan for quite a while and I was pleased to see that the bata version for Zaurus arrived just as I got my Z. Simply a great full featured word processor.
Hancom Sheet - one of the default apps but better than Hancom Word. I\'ll use it until something better comes along.
JustReader - I have many books in Mobipocket format and JR is excellent for reading them. I have a slight problem with it crashing on start-up from time to time that I\'m hoping to find a solution for.
I\'m also experimenting with the different music players, not sure which I like best so far. I\'ve also recently installed FreeNoteQT but have not had the chance to figure out if it\'s something I need or not yet. I got my wireless card working too (thanks to information in the forums) so I need to get browsers and email sorted before too long.

About the FreeNoteQT, when I installed the most recent one on my SL-C860, it works great but the screen loses pixels and it can only work in portrait mode. When I got o the Qtopia menu button, the option to change from landscape to portrait vise verca is gone. I\'ve expiereienced this with the Adobe viewer in the cd. Any way to fix this?

You are running it in magnified mode!
Tap-hold the FreeNoteQT icon and uncheck the magnified box.
The same holds for any app that starts in portrait mode (and greys out the rotation option).

It took me a while to figure that one out as well. At first I was assuming that I was installing apps that would only work on the 5500. As luck had it, I noticed a post about turning off the magnified mode. Now I check the mode of every app right after it\'s installed and had no problems since.
