Title: ROM Options for the 5600 and GPE...
Post by: JedTheHead on April 16, 2004, 12:35:03 pm
I realize this may be a pretty played subject, but don\'t hate the playa for asking again.

I have a 5600 on its way to me so natually I have been doing some digging, research, and software collection.  To be clear on one thing - this is not to be a PDA for me.  I have a PDA (Clie UX50) that does its job well and I am happy with it.  The 5600 is to be a portable \"utility\" tool (for lack of better terms).  I am going to load it up with all my network utils and needs and have them accessable to me on the go.

So....

I really am not a QT / Opie fan - what options do I have?  I REALLY want pdaXrom for the 5600 but it doesn\'t look like that is happening anytime soon.. (although we can hope!!!)

I\'d like a slimmed down, lightweight distro / rom (like Familiar) for the Zaurus with GPE or Matchbox running on it.  I can\'t seem to find any conrete info on loading anything other than QT / Opie based roms on the 5600.

This talks of loading GPE on top of Open Zaurus, but I don\'t want the bloat of both:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php...s%20Enviroments (http://www.zaurususergroup.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=Alternative%20Zaurus%20Enviroments)

Do I have any options?

Thanks!

Nice of someone to copy across my HowTo. Good to see acknowledgements ^o).

When I wrote GPE on top of OpenZaurus I meant the OZ base system libs etc, not Opie (the Qtopia forked GUI).

In any case the zImage won\'t work for your 5600. If you want to go the X11 route I\'d be tempted to grab a pdaXrom image and cut it down so that it will fit in your available ROM space, then build yourself a kernel (and modules) and rebuild the ROM image and see whether it works. I imagine that most of it should work, the processor is the same, the only problem I can see (other than the modules), is with the graphics chip. I don\'t know whether there are optimisations compiled into the X server.

Then again I may be being naive here.
