Title: How do you let mplayer have exclusive use of sound device?

Mplayer crashes on qtopia when you pause and unpause.  The audio device is not available or some similar error is displayed.  Outside of qtopia, it works fine.  I am thinking maybe its the volume applet.  Any ideas how I might turn this off and on?
