Title: New Gpd Clamshell W/ Keyboard In The Works
Post by: Varti on February 04, 2016, 05:52:42 am
For those of you still searching for a Z replacement: a new clamshell console with a built-in keyboard has been announced:

http://liliputing.com/2016/01/gpd-plans-to...-trail-cpu.html (http://liliputing.com/2016/01/gpd-plans-to-launch-gaming-handheld-pc-with-windows-10-cherry-trail-cpu.html)

GDP has in the past already released some clamshell consoles (albeit without a keyboard), like the GPD XD, with some very positive reviews (like this: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/11/h...digital_gpd_xd) (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/11/hardware_review_gamepad_digital_gpd_xd)), so this looks like an interesting project. The measurements haven't been released yet, but since it has a 5.5" display I guess it will be more or less big as an SL-C. It will ship with Windows 10 and eventually Android unfortunately; Linux support might be problematic as explained here:

http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/p...7781/#msg137781 (http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/preliminary-concept-design-of-windows-10-handheld-device/msg137781/#msg137781)

I hope that the designers will eventually shed some light on this. The designers are open to any comment and request on the Dingoonity forum thread posted above.
Thanks to Tomoe on #zaurus for the URL!

3D print size comparisons (https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/threads/gpd-is-going-to-release-an-x86-console-palmtop-computer.76762/page-7#post-1365181) show the device size in similarity to GPD XD. Sounds a neat device!

Good find! So:

SL-C xx00: 124 x 87 x 25mm
GDP Win:   155 x 94 x 24mm

The GDP handheld will be then quite wider (+31 mm) and a bit deeper (+ 7 mm) than the SL-C. I would have preferred it to be smaller, but at least it should still fit into a (larger) pocket.

If you want a linux based clamshell, check out the upcoming Pyra....successor to the great OpenPandora....

Very much in the open source spirit....

I just merged in my duplicate post
---

the Pyra is damn expensive! and still not available.

I think the GPD is more likely to come through

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-win-...-console-laptop (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-win-intel-z8750-win-10-os-game-console-laptop)

It achieved its goal. The specs are fairly good -
* a high end Atom X7-X8750 cpu,
* 4GB RAM,
* 64GB flash,
* 5.5" 720p touch screen with HDMI,
* dual-band wifi and bluetooth,
* stereo speakers,
* keyboard and joysticks...
* memory card slot,
* USB etc,

The GPD is nice, but the keyboard is not as good as the Pyra.....

GPD if you want to run Windows and Pyra if you want to run Debian or other linux distro.....

And Pyra is in final stages of production tweaking (see Pyra forum.....). Developer units are out and in hands of devs....

Pre-orders are being taken.....

If all goes well, Pyra will be out by end of year....

excellent, I hope you get on well with it.

I, and a bunch of other people, have invested a fair bit of time working with a Baytrail Z3735F based device, so we might be able to help you, or at least the list archives might be useful, especially if you need a bit of advice about UEFI booting etc.

One of the GPD guys did reply that the unit uses a standard 64bit UEFI, so in theory there is hope.

If not, this person got ubuntu running under emulation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsNZk0ydqeQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsNZk0ydqeQ)

You can boot 64 bit linux when you only have 32 bit UEFI firmware, as there's a UEFI "shim" that modern linuxes use.

The way I got Debian installed on my Baytrail device was to use the Debian Multi-arch ISO:
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/curren...ti-arch/iso-cd/ (http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/multi-arch/iso-cd/)

I had to attach a USB network adaptor, like one of these:

Just got an email update.  Not the CPU upgrade as expected but should have a device in my hands soon being an Indegogo backer.

Quote
The first batch of the second mass production of GPD WIN will be finished October 20.  We will start delivery to Indiegogo backers from October 20.  As the international logistics is a little complex we hope can finish 100-200 orders each day.

The final processor of GPD WIN is Z8700 because it is more stable than Z8750. We are trying to get touch with Intel to solve this problem but it may need a period of time so in order to avoid too much international repair and a long time delay we final decided to changed it into Z8700.

I'm looking forward to your news. I think a key factor will be whether there's any linux support for the wifi and sound, I'm not quite so bothered about bluetooth.

The CPU downgrade doesn't seem significant

I really want one but not sure I can justify the price right now.
Plus I should wait for others to rush in and do all the hard work of making it run Linux

If this proves popular amongst Zaurusholics, I propose we create a sub-forum

Nice... I must say it's tempting for me too, even if it might never run Linux at all and we'd have to resort to Android (or ANDRAID as they spell it on banggood  ).
Any idea how much would the customs and shipping to Europe cost?

From dragonbox.de :

Questions and Answers:

Q: Is it possible to install a different OS (i.e. Linux)?
A: Maybe. The device has no locked bootloader, but there is no official support for anything else except Windows 10. Besides, similar Intel SoCs are known to have issues running Linux. So it might work, but we cannot promise anything.

I would be interested if it actually can run Arch.

ArchiMark, can you give some feedback on the build quality, display and keyboard once you get yours ?

Just some observation - have a look at these videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkA68yUsWa4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkA68yUsWa4) (BIOS)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPqkEgWwcdM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPqkEgWwcdM) (Windows 10 reinstall)

And you will see the BIOS is rotated as well as the windows installer screens (eg before the proper graphics driver is loaded)

I wonder why that is. Maybe they used a cheap smart phone LCD screen that is designed for portrait mode and the framebuffer defaults to 720x1280?

The Intel driver does very likely hardware rotate without any performance loss (as seen in second video after Windows 10 pulled the driver update).

This could be different when using Linux, eg default kernel FBDEV rotation is pure software and slow (eg with Zaurus, where framebuffer rotation is a pain).

Xorg may work quite fast if hardware rotation is supported by the Intel driver.

I better wait until this is clarified before ordering one. ???

Got WIN today!

Overall, very cool pocketable computer....

Doesn't seem like a whole lot larger than Zaurus clamshell models...although it is larger....

Build is pretty good....

Display is sharp and pretty vivid.

Keyboard is OK....not great, but you will get used to it after a bit....

Plugged in USB stick to try out Linux Mint 18......

Good news it boots up fine and you get to desktop as expected.

Bad news is that Greg suspected, just like BIOS settings screen is rotated sideways, so it Linux Mint.....

So, that would need fixing....but it can be done, then linux should work great.....

Good news, especially that you had no problems receiving a working model reasonably promptly.
I should hope that xrandr will do the trick.

Maybe you can try RemixOS too.

Did Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work without fuss? Any sound?

My Baytrail device mostly works but Linux isn't stable, depending on the exact kernel and patches it will hard lock between tens of seconds and tens of minutes. This is what makes me worried about buying the GPD Win.

Sorry, didn't do much with it....as it was very awkward navigating around screen with it being rotated 90 degrees.....

Will try it again with xrandr and see if I can get it oriented correctly and then test out wifi, etc....

Tried adding 'xrandr -o right' to Grub boot parameters. But get message 'xrandr not found'......

I booted up with screen rotated and then checked WiFi....it works!

Opened up terminal and was able to use it.....even though it is sideways on display.

Tried 'xrandr -o right' and screen went black.

Found webpage with info about rotating screen. Tried what was suggested, but screen went black.

So, main issue now is getting screen rotated correctly....

Any ideas???

Thanks.

PS.  Phawx who has posted lots of WIN videos and posts over at http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/g...indiegogo/5430/ (http://boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-devices/gpd-win-on-indiegogo/5430/) says he got Xubuntu running and screen rotation correct. He says the gui has rotation options. Will check if Linux Mint has it too...[UPDATE: Linux Mint has it too, but screen went black after I selected rotation option.

Also learned that used a modded version of Xubuntu from this site:

http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/2016/10/...-trail-and.html (http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/2016/10/running-ubuntu-on-intel-bay-trail-and.html)

I just tried running it, but after it starts to boot up, the screen goes black.....just read notes on the webpage and it says:

Quote
Some cautionary advice:

The initial menu screen takes slightly longer to appear than with the official ISOs. Depending on the speed of the USB drive used it can be anything from fifteen to forty-five seconds before anything appears on the screen.

After installing with a 32-bit bootloader booting sometimes results just in a blank/coloured (e.g. purple) screen.

To prevent this and to ensure a successful boot it is best boot through the BIOS menu followed by selecting the Ubuntu option.

If dual booting with Windows I recommend installing/re-installing 64-bit Windows to circumvent this issue if your device supports it.

Also, someone else posted they got Arch running with correct rotation with some tweaking. Tried what he did in terminal in Linux Mint, but screen went black.

Thanks for sharing this...

Good to see another example where someone got screen rotated.

I still have not been able to rotate screen....always goes black when I try....

Have tried:

- Linux Mint

- Xubuntu (worked OK for someone else...)

- Lubuntu

While have not figured out how to rotate display, most other things seem to work OK, including WiFi....

Have you seen this, in the same thread?

This is using KDE and Fedora 24
For the screen rotation, we waited until the desktop booted and the display options to rotate the screen.
then the kshell processed needs to be killed and restarted for it to behave properly.

Gnome didn't work when we tried so that's how we ended up with KDE.

Yes, saw that post.....thanks....

Very interesting, how rotation is able to work in some cases and not in others....

So far, one person got rotation in Arch....

One person got rotation in Xubuntu.....

And one person in Fedora 24/KDE......

I am just guessing here as I do not have one of these but it may depend on if the Linux kernel boots with modesetting enabled or not, as well as if there is fbdev rotation enabled in the kernel.
You can disable mode-setting with kernel parameter "nomodeset"

Kernel parameter to rotate legacy framebuffer (FBDEV)
Code: [Select]
fbcon=rotate:

This option changes the orientation angle of the console display. The
value 'n' accepts the following:

0 - normal orientation (0 degree)
1 - clockwise orientation (90 degrees)
2 - upside down orientation (180 degrees)
3 - counterclockwise orientation (270 degrees)

If you boot up Mint or any other Linux to X, can you find out what Xorg driver is loaded ? Xorg log file ?

You can rotate with with "xrandr" once Xorg is loaded or via parameter passed to Xorg.

Cheers!

Keyboard is OK....not great, but you will get used to it after a bit....

What is the keymap like under linux, can you do all F1-F12 , SHIFT, ALT, CTRL etc ..

See my other post about this, this can be fixed. Depends on driver support for hardware rotation.

Maybe I need to get one....

I think if more than four people get one it would be useful to set up a couple of sub-forums for this device - hardware hacking, windows hacking and linux hacking... anyone agree?

Indeed, but I will wait a bit, get some log files and more hardware details from a running recent Linux kernel first, before ordering one.
Saying that, they may have limited stock and it may be best to get in line now if you are very keen.

Have you seen this, in the same thread?

This is using KDE and Fedora 24
For the screen rotation, we waited until the desktop booted and the display options to rotate the screen.
then the kshell processed needs to be killed and restarted for it to behave properly.

Code: [Select]
fbcon=rotate:

This option changes the orientation angle of the console display. The
value 'n' accepts the following:

0 - normal orientation (0 degree)
1 - clockwise orientation (90 degrees)
2 - upside down orientation (180 degrees)
3 - counterclockwise orientation (270 degrees)

If you boot up Mint or any other Linux to X, can you find out what Xorg driver is loaded ? Xorg log file ?

You can rotate with with "xrandr" once Xorg is loaded or via parameter passed to Xorg.

Cheers!

Will try 'nomodeset'.....

Did try fbcon=rotate:1 and xrandr -o right as per guy who got Arch running....

https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdwin/comments/5a...on_the_gpd_win/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdwin/comments/5ac10q/native_linux_on_the_gpd_win/)

But did not work for me......screen turned black....

I can check Xorg driver and log file later.....

So far, xrandr just causes screen to go black....it has worked sometimes for others....

They'll probably do a second production batch, but this depends on how long will Intel keep producing the CPU:

so I'm not sure whether our GPD Win forums will get much traction?

Good idea! I think the choice of those three subforums is spot on. I have added a description to the category, since every other category  in the Model Specific Forums has one, I hope it's ok,

Thanks for creating the WIN forum sections...

Still trying to get linux working right on my WIN...

Have booted up to desktop OK with Linux Mint, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu but not able to rotate display.

This is main issue I've had with every distro that booted up to desktop so far.

Someone else was successful in rotating display in a version of Xubuntu. But I could not.

For some unknown reason, could not get Fedora 24/KDE to boot, even though someone else got it to work and rotate display.

Very odd that some others have been able to rotate display, yet when I do the same steps, it doesn't work for on my WIN....

Unlike some others, I have had WiFi working OK.

My current attempt is Manjaro as someone else was successful in using it and rotating display.

Downloading iso now......will report back after I've tried it.....

If it doesn't work, will try Arch after that as it has worked OK for someone.

I will persevere and keep trying....hopefully, will get at least distro to work....

As for Win 10, it has worked fine on my WIN....no crashes so far on mine, but then I have not played any games on it, like all the others that have reported issues....

And regarding question about display and viewing angles, display is nice and sharp and bright, good color, and viewing angles are very good to me.

[ Just realized, maybe I should have posted this in the linux section..... ]

A GPD Lin is definitely an exciting prospect. I'd have bought one only I got burned by a baytrail convertible (Toshiba Click Mini) which runs linux badly. If I can be certain that the GPD Lin is stable and all hardware works, then count me in!

maybe you guys can create a wiki entry at http://www.linlap.com/ (http://www.linlap.com/)

The current Lin on WIN situation is like this:

A few people have been able to get the screen to rotate properly to landscape with using a WM/DE.

Many others, including myself, have only been able to get console rotated that you see during bootup. When trying to rotate display in GUI WM, the screen goes black.

Need to do more debugging to sort this issue out. Just haven't had time lately, but hope to get time soon......

As for other things, overall, Lin on WIN works OK.....

Have not had problem with mouse, keyboard, ethernet, WiFi, touchscreen.

Someone using Arch said they had to install the WiFi driver manually.

So, if we can get the display rotation issue fixed, think we'll be in good shape.

At least, that's my 2 cents, as we say...............

Both Banggood and AliExpress are now accepting preorders for the next batch, which would be available on 25th December (!). Already 99 preordered on Banggood, 36 on AliExpress, better to hurry if anyone would like one.

I have put it at the top of my birthday's wishlist, maybe I'll be a GDP Win user too at the end of March  Stuff shipped from China to Europe take anyway a long time, I had parcels bought on AliExpress which took 2 months to arrive.

The GPD Win featured on HotUkDeals and got a lot of attention.

I've also noticed there's going to be a non-gamer variant called the GPD Pocket.

shame that the rumoured price is going to be quite high.

The GPD Pocket price will likely be somewhere in the $500 USD range....

Considering it is a small size, custom design, made in relatively low volume, the price seems very reasonable to me.

And glad that this device will have linux support from the get go....

GeekBuying seem to sell the GPD at the cheapest price so far, according to UltrabookReview:

http://www.geekbuying.com/item/GPD-Win-5-5...ack-367872.html (http://www.geekbuying.com/item/GPD-Win-5-5-inch-Game-Console-Intel-Atom-X5-Z8500-Windows-10-OS-4GB-64GB-Gamepad-Quad-Core-2-24GHz-Gorilla-Glass-Screen-1280-720-Type-C---Black-367872.html)

340$ with a free carry case (which is a must, I bought a PDAir one together with my SL-C1000, I haven't regretted my decision once), plus it seems to offer free international shipping. Sounds like a bargain, at least compared to Banggood (360$) and AliExpress (426$ ??). From the description it seems to be the v2 model, although they are still listing the CPU as a Z8700, but they might have forgotten to update the specs list.

It gives me hope that the GPD pocket will go on sale, or come down to a more reasonable price. I'm also hoping that the US$:GB£ will improve giving my £ more spending power.

the GPD Win is now mostly down to the price of the Indiegogo campaign that kicked it off, and they're on a revised version
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-win-...onsole-laptop#/ (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-win-intel-z8700-win-10-os-game-console-laptop#/)

I'm reluctant to be an early adopter, I've been burned a few times, so I'd rather wait 5 months for a slightly revised version that fixes initial problems as well as drop in price.
