Post by: jutleys on January 06, 2018, 04:09:42 pm
So i guess we are not to far from products shipping. I have created this topic for those who get a shipping notification first please post here and pictures of the device once received.

Hope a mod can sticky this topic on top.

Looks like your Order number will determine when you receive your Gemini.  My order is in the 4 thousand range and given that only 2750 devices are to be made in January only the very earliest backers will get their Gemini in January.

Yes but guys how many devices have been sold in total inc the early bird devices? a lot of perks have been sold in those total pledges.

It looks like 1850 devices have been sold with current pledges. What I don't know is how many were sold with previous pledges, ie the early bird options that are now no longer available.

A news tidbit from the FB Gemini Planet page: "Got an update from Robin. Actual production to start in two weeks. Shipments starting at the end of Jan. So let's be patient.". "Robin" is Robin Parker, one of the three Planet's directors. This was posted on the 15th of January, so the production will likely start on Monday 29th January, with the shipments starting in the next days. Fingers crossed.

It is the 29th  well, here it is. Starting to get excited.......

I wonder if they will ship my (Australian) order direct from China. I am a low number backer - hopefully not much longer to wait.

I know I'm going to be way down the list, but it looks like planet have a good production pipeline so I reckon they'll be making at least a hundred a day initially.

* Waves *

I have order number 46, from February 27th last year.

Because reasons (business-related) I just now ordered a second Gemini 4G to get in ahead of the price rise on Friday. That one is order number 6455, so it's definitely not going to be part of the first batch.

(I assume order numbers are sequential and include non-Gemini accessory items. Compared to the sort of manufacturing volume we expect from, say, Apple when a new iPhone comes out, this is frighteningly artisanal in scale ...!)

Hi Charlie and welcome, it's a huge pleasure and an honour to have you here.

I have read that the total amount of Geminis preordered so far are a bit over 3000, and that they mean to produce that amount in the first batch, so by the end of April every backer might receive his device, but that's just speculation.

A new info tidbit from Planet, from a reply they sent some hours ago to a backer: "Not all keyboard layouts are yet finalised. We are proceeding to mass production only with the finalized keyboard. More on this in the coming days." That at least explains why they haven't published all the layouts yet. Source: a post on the FB Gemini Planet page.

I've not been this eager to receive a new device in a long time. I think everything I've bought in the last three or four years have been incremental upgrades, nothing revolutionary.

Yay! Planet has stated that, for european backers, the units will be shipped from UK, so I guess that, at least for them, they'll be first shipped from China to Planet's office, then from UK to the backers.

thanks, Varti!

having the device shipped from the UK to me is great, because it means I don't need to worry about customs duty, or the device being stuck in clearance because it has a Lithium Ion battery. I once had to send an electric bike battery for "repair" and it was very difficult since no couriers would touch it.

Planet just posted Update 48 on the Indiegogo campaign page: they've completed first run production and a load of machines has arrived in the warehouse in Hong Kong.

They'll be air-freighting a pallet to the UK shortly and ship orders UK/EU customers "before the Chinese new year" — which is Friday February 16th. ("We will be shipping perks directly from Hong Kong to all other destinations, including Japan and USA.")

" We have produced about a thousand Gemini devices so far, which means the orders below #1200 are likely to receive their Gemini devices soon. We are aiming to send the backer perks roughly in the perk order number save for factory process restrictions and supply chain process restrictions. This is a very rough estimate of which perk orders are to be shipped this or next week. During the next few days we will publish a link or advise a way how you can find out the status of your order - "Still to be produced", "Produced and waiting to ship" and "Shipped"." (Production on further machines will re-start after the Chinese new year; the factories are all closed for a while.)

It is still not clear if his unit has Linux preinstalled or not, anyway here's a just published comment from Planet's Davide Guidi: "Dear Tatematsu-san, we will be publishing a Linux update today with further details. Also we will publish keyboard update, including Japanese Kana mapping, today."

I suspect shipping from HK to Japan might be faster than having the additional step of shipping back to the UK with customs delays and sending on to a distribution centre etc. Fingers crossed we'll be seeing them soon. I can't remeber being this excited about a product launch for a very long time!!

Congrats Eliyahu! On UPS' page, Worldwide saver is described as having "delivery within one or two business days from Asia, Europe, and Latin America", so you might receive your Gemini quite soon:

My order (#923)  is still showing as 'Order Placed' rather than 'Locked'. IS that because I went for 'The Gemini Bundle - All In' perk rather than just the device?
The order is still showing 'Estimated Delivery Date December 2017' so I have no idea of when I am likely to receive the goodies

Planet has recently commented that they have all the accessories for the bundle in stock, so the shipping at least won't be delayed because of them.

Thankfully I'm working from home today, so in all their tedious glory...

The box, you can tell it's the box from its boxiness:

https://flic.kr/p/F9WDGT (https://flic.kr/p/F9WDGT)

The actual real box rather than the Hermes one.  Please note considerable self-control demonstrated by Hermes packaging definitely not at all ripped off and strewn all over the place.

THAT picture, the clever infographic one.

And finally!  A view of the beast itself snuggled in its lair.

Last one.  Everything in the box unpacked and laid out.

Only that it's a bit fab really.  Better than I expected and I had high hopes for it.  The keyboard is great - I'm using it to type this.  I've mostly got it working how I'd like but it  doesn't seem to want to let me turn of the keyboard clicks and haptic feedback (yes, I have disabled them in the keyboard app).

Most of the apps I've set up so far work the only irritating one being the Barclaycard one - it doesn't scroll properly.  Next job is to put Debiam on it and give that a bit of a kick.

Well, in a massive act of self-control I had the box unopened at my elbow all afternoon. and waited until I got home from work before opening it! It is a pretty nice device, I'm typing this on it right now. The keyboard will take a little getting used to, but it is already much faster than my old Zaurus. Now to update my sig 😀

- packaging is excellent. Contents: PSU and USB-C cable, case removal tool, micro fibre cloth, some stickers, and a getting started leaflet

- the screen has a protector pre-applied.  I'm guessing they will sell replacements; none are included

- it takes a micro SIM (not nano), which luckily is what my old phone had. It also takes a micro-SD card.

- Keyboard is, well, OK. However the keys are more wobbly than I would like, as if each one is balanced on a little balloon. I never used a Psion so I don't know how it compares.  I did used to own a Sony Vaio palmtop, and it was much better than this.

- I think it'll take a while to get used to pressing Fn-O to get a minus sign.  Also Fn-K for @ (I think it would have been much better as shift-quote, which is the standard position on a UK keyboard, but is instead used for tilde)

- During setup, under "Physical Keyboard" it offers me a Keyboard shortcuts helper.  This shows the following shortcuts:

Home = (magnifying glass) + (return)
Back = (magnifying glass) + (backspace)
Recent = (ALT) + (Tab)
Notifications = (magnifying glass) + N

Which is great, except I have no idea what the magnifying glass key is.  It's not the Planet / Alt key.  So of these, Alt-Tab works (but also Fn-A is also dedicated to bringing up the app switcher)

- It will also take a while to get used to using voice control for calling, and sadly this is broken for me.  I tried "call <name> mobile" and it told that I needed to authorize Google to access my contacts. I clicked Continue, it flashed back "setting turned on for <my google account>", but it then went back round asking for authorization.

It now speaks out loud "sure, but when it's safe, you'll need to go to your phone and tap the notification. Then you can let Google access the contacts on your device".  Which is back to the same page again.

- Android version is 7.1.1 (Nougat), which is reasonably up-to-date - although 7.1.2 was released two months ago, on 5 Dec 2017.  If Planetcom keeps releasing updates that will be a major attraction of the platform for me.

- The default screen sleep time (30 seconds) is way too short for me, but just involved digging around settings a bit to fix.

- I see the reflashing tool has appeared on the Support site.  Sadly it's Windows only, and the Android/Debian dual boot is marked as "Technology Preview".  Going forward, if the Debian part can be upgraded independently that's fine.  If the whole phone has to be reflashed each time a new release comes out, that will be a major pain :-(

I'm now just trying to decide whether I should reflash with this or not...

I guess it might be because your SIM is still authenticated to your previous phone, as mentioned here:
”If you have two-factor authentication set up on your Google Account to send you an SMS message, leave your SIM in your current phone until you have performed the initial Gemini setup.”
https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=34768 (https://www.oesf.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=34768)
Try to put back the SIM in your old phone, and see if you get any authorization request or SMS on it.

Hi,

Re: Replying to Shipping email (I have NOT got my Gemini PDA)

The nightmare delivery scenario. Hermes website say the package was delivered this evening and allows me to see the (supposed) signature. It is not mine. Goodness only knows where my Gemini is. What happens now? Do I have to prove that the signature is not mine?

I usually avoid Hermes at all cost. I now remember why.

Very sorry to hear this....

It is a very awkward situation....

Had this happen once here in the USA. Had to keep insisting to delivery company that no, did not get the package. Finally, a few hours later, after they contacted driver, the driver realized that they delivered to another address in my neighborhood. Driver retrieved package and delivered to me.

So, if you haven't called Hermes yet, you better do so now and be very firm that you did not receive package, it is not your signature, and that they need to quickly contact driver to backtrack on his route and figure out where the package is.

Hope you get this worked out.

Hi ArchiMark

Thanks for your concern. For sure I have reported it to Hermes but its Saturday evening and no support until Monday. Ergo no chance of calling the driver back. I will just have to wait and steel myself for Monday's assertiveness. Wish me luck.

Update: My Gemini has arrived!

It seems that my Gemini entered into a quantum state whereby it was simultaneously delivered and not delivered. My guess is that the local courier signed at 18:39 last night on my behalf that he had delivered it so that he could earn his fee. It was actually delived it at 14:00 today and I was not asked to sign.

This is all very shabby from Hermes. Last night I was anxiously sending enquiry emails to Hermes and checking with neighbours in case it had been left with them.

DO NOT USE HERMES!

Thanks for the suggestion.  Actually I ended up doing another factory reset (I hadn't realised that I had to enable cloud backups to Google on my old phone, in order to transfer app settings to the Gemini).  And after that it worked.

I'm sure I accidentally came across a way to switch between multiple desktop screens, but I can't find it any more.  I do wish manufacturers would *document* features and what keystrokes access them, instead of leaving us to discover like some sort of adventure game. I'm too old for those :-)

I can't verify this on my phone since it only has Android 2.3, but I believe you have to press the Recent Apps icon on the right part of the screen, maybe also the same key on the keyboard will work:

Out of the blue, mine turned up this morning. No problems so far, keyboard is brilliant, I am in googless mode with fdroid app store - waiting for sailfish now

It is a high quality device, really solid and just works. For those wondering, i am order 5xx and live in Australia. It came with a US plug (as explained in the indiegogo comments section) but that is no problem - I have many adapters. I'll give it a proper go when I get home tonight.

Telephony all works as expected, VoLTE, SMS 4G - yay.

It seems that the first batch produced after the Chinese New Year will be of 150 units with almost all of them having an UK keyboard. These units were among the 1000 units promised to be shipped before CNY, but which the factory did not manage to manufacture in time. It has been announced that these units will also have the x25 CPU, so I guess that their PCBs have been produced together with the other 850 ones.

Order # 59.
Arrived in Australia, March 13 (unlucky for some).
All in pack
No serious issues, things like the leather pouch is too tight, keyboard was misconfigured but usable.
Otherwise, works as advertised.

An update on the second batch from Robin, on Indiegogo:

"We recently got 1300 units but only UK and US keyboards. Then a further 70 odd with some other keyboard layouts but mostly German. Rest will come as part of mid May delivery now."

Just got an email from DHL that my Gemini has been picked up in Hong Kong and is on its way to me here in USA.

Tracking says it will be here tomorrow!!!

Weird thing is order checker says my unit should be shipped mid-May and in my order details page on IndieGoGo it says 'order placed'......

Go figure......not that I'm complaining that I should have my lil' Gemini tomorrow....

I would mark the shipping notices as 'good news' and not worry quite so much about the details.  We should be getting them inside of the next week - which for an Indiegogo crowdfunder is a win.

I'm in the UK and I've not received any kind of shipping notification.

ah, according to the checker

Code: [Select]
If you selected a US or UK keyboard layout AND your Order ID is 1-4500, your unit will ship out before mid May.
If you did not select a US or UK keyboard layout OR your Order ID is over 4500, your unit will ship end of May.

my order is over 4600 so looks like I've another three weeks wait ;-(

Gemini has landed!

Just got DHL delivery a few minutes ago....

Including hub, extra charger, leather pouch, and HDMI cable.

When I first connected the charger, it showed orange light for a few seconds and then turned green.

When I opened up Gemini, the little blue light is on, which according to the 'Quick Guide' means battery is too low. If that's the case, shouldn't the outside light have stayed orange to indicate it's charging?

Anyway, Gemini looks great!

It's about same size as my iPhone 8+, but about 1 cm longer....

Very cool when you open it up and see the nice little keyboard...

Received mine yesterday afternoon.  California 20XX.  It's a wonderful little machine.  I can see this being able to be the One Computer, potentially: I have it hooked up right now to my giant QHD+ monitor and I used developer settings to reduce the DPI and all of a sudden it looks like Linux, with tabs atop Chrome and everything.  Couple that with my mouse and external keyboard and I could comfortably sit at this and code, then take the same machine out and continue in smaller form factor.  I just need the Linux in Android stuff (requires SD card) and then I'll be off to the races.  Does anyone know if there's something which will contextually change the DPI of the device based on HDMI connected or not?

Yes! It is fantastic in this setup. For most of my coding I'm not sure I would ever need another machine, once we figure out how to make the software a bit more comfortable.

Your comparison pictures really brought an epiphany! I remember lusting over the Vaio P and the picture made me realize that the Gemini has a ton more processing power, oidles more memory, the ability to have far more storage, has better video, has a longer lasting battery, is smaller, and costs a whole bunch less. And that's just the computer part -- Gemini is a telephone, too. (Gemini has no pointing device, but the Sony P didn't have much of a pointing device, so . . .)

So I finally don't want a Sony Vaio P anymore. Thank you for that!

(Though I'm cranky -- I had a long photo assignment today and it turns out the post office tried to deliver my Gemini. I wasn't home, so I still don't get it until Monday. Grrr . . .)

Got mine 3 days ago and am typing this reply with it.

Flashed rooted image immediately after I got the unit, and used magisk as root manager as recommended by Planet C.

Then flashed TWRP and Installed systemless xposed framework from there.

Later installed the force immersive module to get rid of the status bar and soft keys.

This device is smaller than I imagined in a good way and I learnt to touch type on the keyboard in 3 days.

This device is just amazing, so please be patient guys, it's well worth the wait.

Pretty remarkable gadget, isn't it.

As I was setting mine up -- an ongoing process, but I'm spending all my time in Linux -- I glanced over at my expensive and much larger ThinkPad that's just a few years old and realized the Gemini is much more of a computer than the ThinkPad is. (Though I would give a great deal for Gemini to have a TrackPoint mouse nubbins.) This thing is one cool little 'puter.

A must have gadget. Design wise even better than my nmb12 in some aspect, like the 2nd USBC port, decent amount of key travel, and the best part it's pocketable. It's one of a kind.
I know the android with gms is not FOSS but I've chose convenience over freedom. Hope someday I could be capable of making the leap.

Hello! First post here.

Mine arrived yesterday - UK spec, based in Scotland, order 13xx. Had to sit in the office all day knowing it was waiting for me at home!

Impressed so far, although I had a couple of minor frustrations - more to do with my terrible wifi than anything else!

I think I might have had it worse, I had it sitting on my desk all day at work where we are not allowed to connect personal kit to the network (and no micro SIM available, getting that today). Now that was really frustrating :-)

Order #6455 is locked. This order was placed the day before the indiegogo campaign price went up $200, so it's probably one of the last outstanding device orders.

(I have an x25 machine, one of the first batch -- order #46 -- but decided I wanted an x27. Will probably switch to using the new one as a daily PDA and dedicate the old one to experimenting with debian and/or sailfish.)

Received order # 1889 in continental USA today via DHL.  WiFi only.  Yesterday received shipping notifications from Planet and from DHL via email.

Battery was at 99%.

Next step is to make keyboard match USA standard, so Shift-2 is @.

I hear you... it was the same for me, especially during the two weeks wait after the order was locked, before it arrived. Is your order locked? If not, it should be soon, judging from the comments I read here and in other places.

Yaay!  My (WiFi) Gemini arrived yesterday, and I can finally post to the forum again(!)  Many thanks to Varti for figuring the problem out -- my own stupidity in the end.

My general opinion is utter delight.  The keyboard feels fine under my fingers.  Seem to have less spacebar problems than I do on my laptop.  Have to do a little searching for the characters like '-' in unaccustomed places, but that won't bother me long.

I could have done with a few more details on the 'Power LED'.  The Quick Start said that the battery would be only half-charged, so the first thing I did was plug it in.  The LED went red for a few moments, and then turned green.  Wasn't sure what that indicated, so I left it alone for another (impatient) hour.  Watching it charging again right now, it still hasn't turned entirely green, though the status panel says only a few minutes left.  I like the way the status estimates remaining battery time by how much it's been used.  It jumped from "8 hours" to "13 hours" overnight, with a flat graph.  (It seems to be rather optimistic about actual charging time needed.)

I spent yesterday installing some probably-needed apps.  I went straight for Fdroid and Yalp, having heard good things about them here.  I got Firefox through Yalp, and am slowly getting used to the small-screen differences from the version I know.  I'm still doing this post on my laptop, as I'm not quite comfortable with it yet.  Also added K-9 mail (after looking it up and getting confused by "K9" web child-protector!).  It's been crashing on me way too much, but I have managed to send mail.

Does anybody know a good audio streaming app that takes a simple URL?  I've got in the habit of having my Pi streaming Radio Caroline, and it would be nice to take the stream with me to the coffee shop.  There is a Caroline app, but I much prefer getting the stream directly, so I'm in control.

I haven't installed Word yet.  I don't normally need full word-processor features, so is there any editor somewhere between that and Notes?
Oh, yeah -- I also installed Termux (with vi!), but it seems to have its own dataspace, so I'm not sure if I can access Android files.

I don't think a WiFi-only flashing kit is available yet, but in any case I want to get a feel for the new-to-me Android first.

I'm glad you're happy, Pete   As I slowly get my Gemini set up and get familiar with it, it's starting to feel more like ‘my’ machine, and I'm sure I'll be loving it to bits before too long.  It's certainly a worthy Psion replacement.

The question of apps is an interesting one.  I'm completely new to Android, but have already found a few promising apps.  This topic's already spread far too wide, though, so I'll start some new ones!

Order 4655 (wifi + 4G) is out for delivery today, in the UK. So is the camera module I ordered separately.

So I think they must be most of the way through shipping the backlog at this point.

I was out this evening and I had to restrain myself from abandoning the event and coming home to play.
Mine came with the cable, charger, removal tool and separately the camera module. Removing the back is scary! I slapped in a spare Three SIM and a 64GB memory card.
So far the keyboard seems fine, even the space bar although it does make a different noise as does the Del key.
And yes, I did make the classic mistake of trying to turn it on using the camera button.

This message typed on the G.

I received my wifi only unit earlier this week.  I wonder if there is a way to reconfigure the button for power rather than Google Assist.  That would be cool.

WiFi Only #6887 UK Keyboard, UK charger,   Invested via Indigogo Feb 2018.

Got email from planet with the Royal Mail tracking number evening of 14th - Postie delivered it to me (Northern Scotland) early afternoon on 15th.   If you really can't wait worth noting Royal Mail tracking is not that real time - until about an hour before it arrived 15th I was saying still it was in Gatwick...

Got another email from Indigogo some 6 hours after it was delivered saying it had been dispatched!

No idea about "locking" this was the only comms I received!

Got my US Keyboard/4G yesterday (Monday), a day early, delivered from HK to Washington DC area. Shipping: Friday-Monday, very impressive.

A ton of fun so far. Everything seems up to snuff. Had a little glitch with a downloaded Netflix becoming choppy. Googled it and folks said to restart the device--the ultimate jiggle-the-handle, but it did work.

Scratchiness in wired earphones as promised, but that disappears when any audio is played, also promised.

Pleased to have FM radio, though I don't know why.

I'm going to try and make this my phone. Haven't quite figured out how to get along without a camera, but I rarely use it as it is.

Received my 4G Gemini plus a camera module yesterday. My order was #18xx with a Russian keyboard. There was a bit of an issue as I contacted Planet Computers about the order still not being locked when it was supposed to ship at the end of May (I can see now other folks indiegogo orders weren't being updated either, mine didn't show dispatched until after it had already arrived). They informed that the Russian keyboard layout i'd ordered was out of stock, they responded quickly offering to swap for a UK keyboard and have it sent out the next day which i accepted and they have done.

Shame i couldn't get the keyboard ordered and wasn't notified to expect a further delay but i'm happy with the way they handled the issue once i brought it to their attention. Loving the device also. Took a few attempts but i've just re-flashed to Anrdoid with Debian and SailFish

Order #666x
Wifi+4G
Dvorak keyboard
EU Power
All-In-Bundle
Ship to Germany

Order Date 2018-02-08
Order Locked 2018-07-06
Shipping email DPD UK 2018-07-19
Arrived 2018-07-23

Quite curious what parts of that bundle will arrive, if I can arrange with that downwards moved V-Button on a not quite standard Dvorak-Layout and so many more questions.

Edit: That non-standard dvorak-keyboard is really hard to understand. "QJKXB"-row is off-by-one. :-/

you should be able to export your outlook address book into a form which you can import on https://contacts.google.com (https://contacts.google.com) and then your phone will pick them up through the usual Google sync.
