Title: 640x480 VNC with Pixel Resampling (port of Ultr@VNC)
Post by: TonyOlsen on April 21, 2004, 12:08:39 pm
( http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/ (http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/) ).

Could we get a port of the UltraVNC VNCViewer to work in the 640x480 screen of Zaurus C7x0 and C8x0?  With the pixel resampling that UltraVNC does I could view a 1280x960 computer screen on my Zaurus (for those with good eyesite        ).

keypebble already does this.

I found keypebble at http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=186 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=186) ... but this doesn\'t appear to run in 640x480, nor does it appear to resample pixels to give me 1280x960 like UltraVNC does.  It looks like it only supports 320x240.

Did I miss something?  Is there a special setting for that?

Grab a version from one of the latest OZ feeds (3.3.5 should be compatible with a standard Sharp ROM, don\'t try 3.3.6pre1), you\'ll have to repackage it though.

I\'m new to Linux and the Zaurus.  I don\'t know how to package or re-package applications.

What is the \"OZ feed\"?  Do you have a URL for KeyPebbel there?

Thanks again,

http://www.openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/c...e_1.0.3_arm.ipk (http://www.openzaurus.org/official/3.3.5/collie/ipks/opie-keypebble_1.0.3_arm.ipk)

ar -x opie-keypebble_1.0.3_arm.ipk

then tar the resultant files, then gzip the tar file, then rename to ipk. Then you\'ll (almost certainly) need libopie - try a search for that as I\'ve never tried running opie apps on the Sharp ROM.

What version of KeyPebble?  Where did you download it from?

Are you able to show screens at half size (pixel resampling), where 2x2 (4) pixels on the desktop = 1 pixel in KeyPebble?

I think, it was here... (http://nsb.homeip.net/taihi/pc/vnc/linuxzaurus/)

The link on that page is outdated and doesn\'t work.  I did some further searching and found http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=186 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=186) (back where I started), but when I try to install the ipk, it doesn\'t see anything in it to install.

Instead I downloaded the other link mentioned there ( http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=186 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=186) ), and this IPK was around 4 KB larger and it contained actual packages.  It does pixel resampling great!

BUT.... it\'s only displaying in 240x320 mode.  How do I get it to work in 640x480 mode?  I\'m I still using the wrong port?

PsionX, can you e-mail your IPK?

I found another version at:

http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/details.phtm...ficial=&format= (http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/details.phtml?package=qpe-keypebble&official=&format=)

But it was also only 240x320... and it didn\'t work that well.  It appears to be any earlier port.

Does anyone know where to get a 640x480 version of KeyPebble?... or does the 240x320 version work in 640x480 when you make some unknown system settings change?

PsionX,

Thanks for e-mailing me the IPK, but the one you sent was the same as at:

http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=186 (http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/showdetail.php?app=186)

I can\'t get it to display 640x480.

Don\'t forget to remove the tick from the \"Display with magnified screen\" box.

I couldn\'t find that anywhere.  I suspect that the IPK you sent it different from the one you\'re running.  The one you sent has the following settings (in 3 tabs):
\"Server\" tab: Host Name, Display Number, Password, Bookmark Name
\"Options\" tab: Check for screen updates every X Milliseconds, Request 8-bit session, Raise on bell, Request shared session, Scale Factor
\"Encodings\" tab: Hextile encoding, CoRRE encoding, RRE encoding, Copy rectangle encoding

No, it\'s the Qtopia option (landscape mode) when you put your stylus on the KeyPebble icon 2s. Qtopia opens a window with \"Display...\" and \"Execute with root priilege\".

Hurray!!! That did it!

Sorry, I didn\'t know about that menu there... thanks for the tip!!  Now I can go try some other applications I couldn\'t get to run in 640x480 as well...

You\'ve made my day!  Thanks!!

does the default opie-keypebble_1.0.0-sharprom_arm.ipk works with pixel resampling or do i need to repackage the opie-keypebble_1.0.3_arm.ipk to utilize this feature?

is pixel resampling similar to \"Scaling\"? - an option that i saw in 1.0.0 version

\"Pixel Resampling\" is a specific type of \"Scaling\".  \"Scaling\" simply means it is resized.  PCAnywhere does \"scaling\"... but PCAnywhere doesn\'t do it well.  PCAnywhere simply \"skips\" the extra pixels.  \"Pixel Resampling\" takes, say, 4 pixels and averages out the color to produce 1 pixel with the average of those 4 (or more?) pixels.  This produces a \"cropped\" image with much more detail and is easier to read.

In VNC, if I understand correctly, \"Pixel Resampling\" happens on the server.  Some versions of VNC Server support this and some don\'t.  UltraVNC does.

Hope that helps.

i see, so as long as my vnc server supports \"pixel resampling\" it does not matter which version of vnc client i use? i.e : The client does not ened to explicitly support \"pixel resampling\".
