Title: Don't show taskbar when opening
Post by: zevv on June 27, 2018, 10:16:54 am
Is there a way to prevent the task bar from popping up each and every time I open my Gemini?

Settings/Gemini Settings, then untick the first choice.

No such option in my settings, I guess it is time to do a firmware upgrade. Thanks!

You sure?  I think it was there right from the first firmware version.

Open Settings (Fn+Del), then scroll down to the ‘Device’ section; it should be the first entry there.  (Its first option is ‘Show App Bar on open’.)

No, it was never there, I'm sure I've been through the setup menus quite extensively - top item under 'Device' is 'Display'. I'm running Gemini-7.1-planet-16032018-V2.
The OTA update doesn't work for me because of the rooted android, and the instructions for updating manuall do not work for me, so for now I'm stuck on this version.

It's probably worth working out how to update manually, even if it's awkward.  This probably won't be the last issue you have that a later firmware would fix.

If you've already flashed it with rooted Android, then it should be mostly the same process.  And if you're sticking with the same choice of OS, then it should be possible to do so without wiping your Gemini.  (However, backups are always advisable!)  I did it the other day; the important bit is to untick the userdata partition (which will force ‘Download only’ mode); in fact, you may only need to download the boot partition.

For who this concerns: I was able to update manually using flashtool, and unchecking the 'boot' and 'userdata' partitions. All is well, and the dreaded taskbar is now gone!

Settings changed the "dreaded" PlanetComputer's task bar to show for few seconds when powering up and then hide itself.

Jake

I have tried this setting unticked and I still get the taskbar popping up after the Gemini starts up.  It comes up about 8-10 seconds after the desktop appears, stays up for another 10 seconds and then hides itself.  I've tried restarting the Gemini after changing the setting in case that is required, but it still pops up and then hides itself.

In fact there are two settings here that seem to do nothing.  The first setting line says 'Show App Bar on open' and the second one says 'Go to desktop on open' and it doesn't matter what position I set either of these two switches, as the machine does exactly the same every time!  Question: if it didn't go to the desktop, what would the screen show?

Have I misunderstood what these two settings do?  Thanks.

Those settings only work when you are waking it from sleep, when you re-start or boot up the Gemini I think it will always behave like you describe. If you close the Gemini with an app open, it will open with the same app when you open/wake it again.

(I believe there have been similar setting-type behavior in the Nokia Communicator-series, and maybe in the Psion as well, but that I don't remember, as I unfortunately only had it for a short time before the cable broke...)

(It seems that you are talking about STARTING your Gemini, but if you re just waking it, and those settings still have no effect, there is apparently something wrong...)

Thanks 'gymbo', it seems I have misuderstood those settings.  It is only when booting/starting up from off that the taskbar appears every time.  When waking from sleep it responds correctly with no taskber, so all is working as it should.
