Hi Guys,
I was a long time user of the Psion Agenda and there is a calendar app which is in my experience BETTER than the original Psion agenda.
It is called CalenGoo: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?...droid&hl=hu (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.calengoo.android&hl=hu)
CalenGoo is full customizable:
- You can basically set anything (color, font size, background color, synchronization, etc.).
- It has drag & drop for tasks and event.
- Tasks can have priorities.
- It can sync with multiple Google calendars, but you can also have your own calendar in the device without Google.
WEEK VIEW:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
THE SAME WEEK VIEW BUT WITH CALENDAR SELECTION AND VIEW SELECTION BAR TURNED OFF:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
THE SAME WEEK VIEW BUT WITH ICONS AND DIFFERENT TEXT COLOR AND DIFFERENT TIME FORMAT:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
MONTH VIEW:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
YEAR VIEW:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
HOWEVER, CalenGoo does NOT have keyboard shortcuts. The developer is ready to make keyboard shortcuts, but he uses a voting system to decide what to develop.
I have suggested him to add following shortcuts:
M month
D day
W week
L list
Y year
T task
space = today
< previous (week/day)
> next (week/day)
ctrl-T = new task
ctrl-E = new event
cursor keys = move selected day
Please support my initiative and vote for "Add keyboard shortcuts" at:
https://calengoo.de/features/calengooandroid (https://calengoo.de/features/calengooandroid)
Thanks:
Balazs

Very happy to vote — I'm looking for a good calendar app.
However, before we do so, are those the best choices?
I'd probably suggest that all those shortcuts use the Ctrl key — so that, like Psion Agenda, unmodified typing automatically starts creating a new entry. Would that make sense in CalenGoo?
-
Thanks for telling us about this; I never heard about Calengoo but it seems it is a *very* usable calendar app indeed.
I'm all for keyboard shortcuts, so I also made my vote. But given the extreme configurability of the app as it is now, I guess the author would probably be happy to make shortcuts configurable as well, instead of only adding a fixed set.
-
Many thanks for posting this; it is an amazing app with outstanding support.
What users may not know is that there is a beta copy of the app which will sync with a desktop version (also in beta). You need to contact the author to be given permission to become a "tester" and then (if successful) you will get a link.
-
Thk you @zsalab2 for the information, there's one more vote.
I'm probably gonna use Lightning along with light DAV compatible apps in Android and Sailfish OS, but this Calengo looks fine!

Hi Guys,
thank you for the support! I wrote to the developer and he already started to work on the keyboard shortcuts.
He sent me a beta version to test. We have now working:
W (week view)
D (day view)
M (month view)
T (task view)
ctrl-E (new event)
ctrl-S (save)
ctrol-C (cancel)
-
A second beta version has now these keys:
W = week view
D = day view
M = month view
T = task view
A = agenda view
Y = year view (Z in German and Hungarian keyboards)
ctrl-E = new event
ctrl-T = new task
ctrl-S = save
ctrl-C = cancel
ESC ESC (cancel)
1 = today (0 in German and Hungarian keyboards)
-
A third beta version has now these keys:
W = week view
D = day view
M = month view
T = task view
A = agenda view
Y = year view (Z in German and Hungarian keyboards)
ctrl-E = new event
ctrl-T = new task
ctrl-S = save
ctrl-C = cancel
1 = today (0 in German and Hungarian keyboards)
Del = today
V = previous (day/week/month)
B = next (day/week/month)
ESC = menu selectable (today/exit/cancel)

Thanks for the suggestion about Calengoo, zsalab2!
Great program....much more usable than Gemini's program.
I like using the 'Landscape Day view (week) and set it to show 5 days (Monday - Friday). This is a great vertical day format, that allows you to see your days with colored time blocks.
I've been testing out the beta program.
Had a few comments over the past few days and developer, Dominique, has been very responsive and quick in getting me updated versions to test. Now, all the keyboard shortcuts work well.
Hope he releases the updated Calengoo Pro version soon.

I have suggested the developer to:
- Q = previous
- E = next
- S = month view
When these are set, all major buttons (A-agenda, D-day, W-week, S-month, Q-prev, E-next, 1-today) are at the same location, making navigation very quick.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I also suggested to have a popup with the complete list of all keyboard shortcuts mapped to the "?" key.
-
(Today = 0 means Today = 1 because I have a Hungarian keyboard)
-
The developed added all these keyboard shortcuts to the app. They will be available in the next update for non beta-testers as well.
Only change:
H = help
And: ESC = exit works with double press, so we do not accidental exit.

I am watching this thread with much interest. I am still interested in the Planet PDA App, because this 'comes with' the Gemini and is supposed to be developed for it.
Nevertheless, the Calengoo developer is clearly much more open to improvements. At this speed, Calengoo will be adapted to the Gemini, before Planet PDA gets the basic bugs out of its own app !

'supposed to be', is the right phrase.....
Calengoo is much more adapted already.....
The developer is super responsive and open to our suggestions, and incorporates many of them, and very quickly....
If Planet was smart, they'd hire him to to do the Planet version.....

An upvote for the sensational calengoo from me. I'm sorry Planet, back to the drawing board, I deleted agenda pretty quickly - 2/10.

I am still hesitating between Calengoo, aCalendar and Business Calendar. With the disadvantage that Calengoo cannot be 'try before you buy'.
Quick question: is there already a version out-of-beta (i.e. the version on Playstore) that has keyboard shortcuts ?
I am not really into a beta version, as I am already an unvoluntary beta tester for the Gemini Agenda app.

You most certainly can install and try out Calengoo, it has an initial trial period (see pic)... Have no idea about the beta...
-
Thanks !
I could not find it in the Play Store, but when I google it, google finds both the paid version as well as the trial.
Currently playing around with the lay-outs...
It seems that (at least) the trial does not have keyboard operated functions, so that partially answers my own question.
Very nice program.
Difficult, all those choices. The responsiveness of the author is of course an extreme plus !

Just email the dev, Dominique, and he will provide a link to the beta....
android@calengoo.com
It's really not a beta, like in a new program, with lots of bugs...it's the program with keyboard shortcuts added.
And with my and several others input, he already tweaked program. To me, it should be ready now or very soon for actual release.

That doesn't answer whether it's better than aCalendar, though
(I have to make that decision, too…)
-
Does CalenGoo need you to sign into a Google account, like the Planet Agenda does?
(Sorry if that's a dumb question, but I can't tell from their web site, and can't try it and see without forking out money…)
-

No, it does not. It allows you to sync to any android calender - which for many people means syncing to google - but it does not in any way depend on google services.
I run Calengoo together with DAVdroid [1], and sync to a Radicale [2] server on a linux box - no google involved here.- https://f-droid.org/en/packages/at.bitfire.davdroid/

No, it does not.
Sounds good! I don't want to sync to anything — just to hold the calendar locally.
The next hurdle is: do I need to sign into Google to buy it…?

No, you don't. I contact the developer by e-mail and was able to pay using paypal, after which I received a link to the .apk to download and manually install.

Great, TVM.
My last excuse just disappeared…

I sent the developer an email this afternoon, and he replied only a few hours later with a link! I paid (with VISA) and already have CalenGoo installed. So far, so good!
However, it could be a while before I'm able to make full use of it, as transferring my existing agenda to it turns out to be harder than expected…
I have 25 years' worth of data in Psion Agenda. I already found a Psion program called vCal which can convert that to a .vcs (vCalendar) file. It turns out that CalenGoo can import .ics but not .vcs. However, I found a Java program which can convert .vcs to .ics.
But checking the result in a text editor showed some deeper problems. It seems that vCal has lost a lot of data: all repeats, all anniversaries, all alarms, and all embedded objects! I only had 30-odd embedded objects, so I can do those manually, but the rest would take forever (and I'd never be sure I got everything).
So I'm now wondering how feasible it might be to write my own conversion program…
(Edit: this may be feasible in OPL, as Psion released several OPXs (OPL eXtension modules), one of which gives programmatic access to the Agenda engine. In fact, I already have it installed, along with its readme. If it gives access to everything relevant, which at first glance it seems to, then this should be doable. Also, .ics is a text-based format and looks straightforward, though it'd be useful to see some docs on it.)
-
Good news: Agenda2.opx does make it easy to access a Psion Agenda file. It gives access to all entry types (appointments, events, anniversaries, todos), to their dates and times, alarms, symbols, tentative and crossed-out flags.
Bad news: It doesn't give access to their repeats, nor to styling (bold &c) nor embedded objects.
So it's still worth trying to write a converter of my own, as it could probably do a better job than vCal. But it can't do everything; it'll need lots of manual work afterward, using the Agenda program's list view to identify all the repeats &c.
Still, the developer of CalenGoo has been very helpful, and given me a few pointers as to what CalenGoo will accept.
Apparently “There seem to be many Gemini owners waiting for these keyboard shortcuts.” Quite a few folks here must have contacted him! It sounds like there may be a proper release with them in the next couple of weeks.
-
(It doesn't distinguish timed and untimed appointments, either; it gives them all start and end times. I've been going through 4000-odd entries over 25 years, manually identifying the untimed ones. That's now done, but going through and manually identifying all the repeats will take a lot longer…)

CalenGoo 1.77 was released this week and the developer updated the keyboard shortcuts to better fit the Gemini and among others pressing "del" now leads directly to "settings".

Has anyone else found that day view doesn't work properly in landscape mode? It shows a week with the day highlighted.
However rotating the Gemini to portrait shows day view correctly.
Steve.

I get one day in two columns... But the "timeline" is not 24h (which is confusing). The "start-time" (it is, as far as I can see, not possible to show end time as well) is showing in 24h but not the timeline...??
Might have something to do with dpi setting (the showing of week), I've set mine to 550dpi, which is the highest setting where Agenda will still function more or less correct (unfortunately it doesn't use the full size of each day in week-view, you need to scroll when it is 60-70% "full").
The other possibility is that there has been some update to Agenda, I don't remember how it used to look (I mostly use week-view anyway).

Sorry, I didn't make it clear I was referring to Calengoo. Also I have found that I was missing a setting. So all sorted now.
Sorry for the noise.

Well this tread IS primarily about Calengoo (I just didn't make the connection when replying...), so you were "correct" (and hence, I was "wrong")...
I am by the way using a kind of cumbersome approach to adding calendar data on my Gemini for the time being: I create the appointment in Agenda, add the location in Calengoo (otherwise I would have to use Google Maps or search, and get a unnecessary long, and non descriptive, location), and then go back to Agenda to CHANGE the reminder from "Notification" to "Alarm". Calengoo crash if I try to edit en entry with alarm, and I seem to remember the same problem occasionally with the standard calendar program in Android. And if you just ADD an alarm it will not work properly (you usually get no way of turning it off when it goes off, which is kind of annoying, and kind of defeats the purpose...). And would love to be able to SNOOZE the alarm from Agenda; the preferences in the program suggests it should. As it is I need to set a separate clock-alarm around 10 minutes after the Agenda-alarm to get something I can snooze as well.
The week-view in Calengoo is nice (you can get both start AND end time!), but you can't edit entries from it, and Calengoo don't support alarms... Therefore this setup for now, but don't know how long I will put up with it...
