Where can I set the file associations - e.g. which program to use for PDF ord WORD files?

I'm no Android expert, but I think the nearest it has is: Settings –> Apps –> (cog) –> Opening links.

However, if you're opening a file from a third-party file manager, then it may have its own rules.

Based on my experience of a few phones...

It is independent of the file browser used.

If there is only one app for a given file (or URL) it will open in this - is there is more than one app the first time you open a file you will get a prompt like the one below
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Selecting "ALWAYS" just does that - if you want to "reset" this - go into Settings --> Apps, find the Apps that is opening and then go to "Open by Default" and clear it.

If you want more of a choice each time there are apps like Better Open With (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aboutmycode.betteropenwith)
