Title: When's the new firmware coming out?
Post by: smapmap on September 28, 2018, 10:04:15 am
Anyone got any ideas when we're hoping to see the next firmware release? Been several months since Google Assistant was borked.

According to the Latest News (http://support.planetcom.co.uk/index.php/Main_Page#Latest_News) on the Planet Computers support site, new firmware was released 11 days ago (2018-09-17), and can be downloaded from their partition tool page (http://support.planetcom.co.uk/partitionTool.html) and their firmware page (http://support.planetcom.co.uk/download/LinuxFirmware/LinuxFirmware.html).

I'm surprised not to have heard about this before.  Has anyone tried it yet?

(Things I'm waiting to be fixed: key ghosting, side button and earphone buttons when the lid's closed, phase and stereo of the inbuilt speakers…)

I don't think key ghosting can be fixed because it's a hardware issue, but there might be some mitigation.
I didn't know about the new firmware, I hope to give it a try this weekend.

Wonder why this hasn't been pushed out OTA?

the contents of the zip file is still 12062018

there's only one file which is different, the root_boot.img.

I flashed it anyway and the system reports it's still the same version.

I wonder what the change is.

It's explained here:

17/09/2018 - A new firmware for rooted Android has been released. This will fix the issue that has been reported about the updated Magisk Manager software not working correctly. You can download the new firmware using the usual partition tool link: support.planetcom.co.uk/partitionTool.html. The old firmware is still available  under the "Firmware List and MD5 checksums" link on the partition tool page, if needed.

Someone in the Facebook page said it didn't fix things for them and they ended up rooting in the conventional way without magisk

Do we know if that's the only change?

(I have root access set up fine with Magisk Manager, so it's probably not worth upgrading unless there are other benefits.)

I think if things are working fine, it's best not to apply this upgrade, more chance of breaking stuff.

Agreed! Agreed! Agreed!

If it isn't broken, don't mess with it (at least for now and only until whatever the OS update is tweaked to STABLE).

Planet told me last month that an update to Oreo is forthcoming / "soon".

The unanswered question, among others in Planet's lap, is WHEN?

The larger concern is the Gem's 11-month old security patch.

According to the latest Indiegogo update, it should be out next week!

It isn't Oreo, and don't know if it will help on Google Assistant. But Oreo SHOULD come later this year. And Agenda has apparently got an update, and the Data application will make it's debut!!

(But with Planet's track record with keeping timelines we could still get the first firmware update just in time for Christmas, and the Oreo update by summer...             )

It seems it's out already. At least for me.
I received a firmware update OTA, but failed to update the device because it was repartitioned: I have Android, Linux and SailFish installed.
Do anyone know how can I install the update without repartitioning the device?

Yes, there's a big update, but they've not made the manually flashable image available on their download site yet.

Is that another, newer update or are you referring to the Oct. 11th (thereabout date) update?
